Kate Tokyo Brown Shade Eyes Palette Sepia BR-3 Review

Hey there lovelies! I was looking for a rose gold eyeshadow (I don’t want to run out of my favourite Lorac Unzipped palette) and found this beauty on the Kate counter. Have a look-see!

Kate Brown Shade Eyes Palette

Claims:

A 4-shade brown eye shadow palette that creates a contoured and mature look. There are 6 different combinations of well-balanced brown shades with a unique powder texture. The fake shade powder creates natural shades to achieve the contoured look as you desire.

My Experience with Kate Tokyo Brown Shade Eyes Palette Sepia BR-3:

Packaging: The palette comes in a black plastic box with a transparent lid on top and snaps shut. It has a dual-ended sponge tip included, which I rarely ever use. The packaging is pretty sturdy and perfectly dinky enough for travel. This palette has 2.2 g of product.

Shade: The shade name is Sepia BR-3. All shades have slight shimmer except the fake shade powder, which does not. The shade powder is exactly my skin shade. I would describe the shades as below (from L to R):

  • Off-whitish, cream colour.
  • Rose colour – my favourite shade!
  • Dark brown colour.
  • Shade powder – typical medium-tan.

The rose shade is so beautiful when the light hits it, but when it faces away from the light, it looks darker. This makes it perfect for a one-shadow look.

Consistency: The shade powder is a dream to work with. It has the consistency of a pressed powder. The other shadows are in between satin and full-on shimmer, but the shimmer is very finely milled and it translates beautifully on the lid as in the swatch. This is something I highly prefer. But they also create a lot of fallout since they are powdery. Tapping the brush after you load the product onto the brush helps. You can also foil them with a mixing medium to prevent fallout and to get more concentrated shimmer and colour. One unique aspect of the shade powder is that the shade powder does not create any fallout.

Pigmentation: These offer average pigmentation (lower than Western eyeshadows but higher than typical Japanese drugstore eyeshadows). This is because Japanese drugstore eyeshadows are generally frustratingly bad in pigmentation and are chock-full of shimmer. This one pleasantly surprised me. It is perfect for everyday or events.

How I like to use it: I use the shade powder, right after applying primer, all over from the lid to brow bone. This evens out my skin tone slightly and provides a smooth surface for the next shades to go on. Then I apply the rose gold shade all over the lid and wedge it into the crease, then I load my brush with the shade powder and blend it out. The dark brown shade can be added for added intensity in the outer V. The whitish shade is too strong and too shimmery for my tan skin as highlight, so I generally use Buff from Lorac Pro 2 to highlight under the brow bone.

The other problem with this palette is that there is only a few looks you can get out of it, and all of them will look fairly similar. I imagine the shade powder is a great transition eyeshadow for dark skinned ladies and a solid crease colour for fair skinned ladies. Fair skinned ladies can also use this powder for contouring. I also use the dark brown shade as eyeliner. Doing that very softly defines the eyes, instead of say, black. Now since this is a fairly neutral palette, you can really go bold on the lips. Red or any bold colour would pair nicely with this look.

Longevity: Since I have oily eyelids, I never use these shades without a primer, but I believe they need a primer for holding/staying power and vibrancy.

Would I repurchase Kate Tokyo Brown Shade Eyes Palette Sepia BR-3?

Yes. I am definitely planning to buy some more palettes from the same range. I would rather buy locally produced palettes than eyeshadows from abroad because of the price point.
