Laura Mercier Rosewood Paint Wash Liquid Lip Colour Review

Hi guys!

I always wanted to jump on the liquid lipstick bandwagon, but Amercian cosmetics are hard to come by in Japan. So I went, nay rushed to the Laura Mercier counter after hearing Eshani mention their liquid lipstick in one of her videos.

Packaging: The packaging is not out of the ordinary on this one. It is quite simple/minimalstic but doesn’t scream luxury. It comes in a rectangular lip gloss container. The applicator is flat and a double-sided doe foot type. It also holds the right amount of product to go over the lips entirely. It has a gun metal cap. There is 6 mL of product in the tube.

Product Description:
A fresh coat of liquid demi-matte colour with every stroke. Let your inner artist take over with this spectrum of purely intense aerated colour. Rich, cushiony, colourfast shades float on lips and stay the day. Plunge in and let it wash over you.

Ingredients:
Isododecane, Octyldodecanol, Hydrogenated Polydecene, Hydrogenated Styrene/Isoprene Copolymer, Mica, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Polyethylene, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Wax (Helianthus Annuus Seed Cera), Propylene Carbonate, Silica Dimethyl Silylate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Tocopherol, Dicalcium Phosphate. Shade: The shade is a beautiful rosy brown. I imagine it working for all skin tones. For tan to deep skin tones, it is a nice “my-lips-but-better” shade. For lighter skin tones, it will be a darker Kylie Jenner-inpsired colour.

Application: Let’s face it, the application is the most crucial part when dealing with liquid lipsticks. One dip into the product seems to be enough to cover the entirety of the lips. The side of the doe foot applicator is interesting because it does not seem to hold on to any product, so you can use that to blend the lipstick with it if you wish. One pass over the lips gives complete opacity, so I don’t feel like you need two layers to make it show. I do the finger popping trick immediately after applying liquid lipsticks, because they can get on your teeth. So, I do that every time I apply.

Finish: Within a minute of application, I can feel the product starting to set on my lips. But the finish does not look crazy different from when I first apply the product, that is, it maintains a satin finish throughout the day and feels very very comfortable on the lips. But if you apply maybe two or three layers, then you can start to see the demi-matte finish as they claim. One thin layer will give you satin finish only.

Transfer: Another thing to note about this one is it will transfer from the start to end of the wear time. But because it seems to maintain the creaminess, it does not flake or settle into lip lines. Even when the product has worn off, I find I can reapply just as well and it works wonderfully, but it gets on to the teeth every time I apply it, even with the pop trick.

Formula: The formula is so good on this one. It is creamy, easy to spread/blend, and easy to correct your mistakes even after it has ‘set’. Weirdly, it seems to ‘oxidise’, that in turn is just a smidgen darker than the original colour after a few minutes of application. As for the formula, the closest dupe I can think of is the Rimmel Apocalips range. If you have that already, you will have an idea of how this liquid lipstick performs.

Staying Power:  If I am not eating/drinking at all, I can get a good 6-8 hours of wear time. With eating/drinking, it will last 4-5 hours before I need to touch up. If I eat something especially very oil based, the lipstick still lasts about 3-4 hours on me.

Scent: It has a mild but chemical-ly scent. I am not too fond of it, but it is really mild and I don’t smell during application.

Pros of Laura Mercier Rosewood Paint Wash Liquid Lip Colour:

  • Beautiful shade – will work for all skin tones.
  • Full pigmentation – one pass will give complete opacity.
  • Good wear time.
  • Good formula.
  • Maintains a creamy satin finish even after it has set – feels comfortable on the lips.
  • Application is very easy because of flattened doe foot applicator – holds the right amount of product.

Cons of Laura Mercier Rosewood Paint Wash Liquid Lip Colour:

  • Transfers.
  • Has a very slight chemical scent.

You will really enjoy this if you like liquid lipsticks. If you are on a very tight budget, I recommend the Rimmel Apocalips instead.
