Hello gorgeous gals,
Anyone who has seen my recent posts on Insta knows how much I love Laura Mercier Caviar sticks – especially the shade “Plum!!” Today, we will talk about one of the lipsticks from her range. I have tried Laura Mercier lipsticks in the past – not sure if it was the same range or the previous one – and did quite like the formula. I thought it was time to test it again. So, let us find out more about the lipsticks in the “Velour” range.

The packaging is quite minimalistic. It reminds me of the Smashbox lipstick or even NARS Audacious for that matter minus the magnetic closure. It’s a cola-colored cuboid tube with the brand name printed in black – super impossible to see. Don’t know how it helps them in terms of product recall value. Anyway, the lipstick itself has a normal twist-up mechanism and the cap closes securely. The product doesn’t have too much weight so would be easy to travel with.
My Experience with Laura Mercier Velour Lovers Lip Colour Sensual:
Color: “Sensual” described as a “muted pink” color is actually a light, peachy-pink toned n*de shade. I was thinking it might be similar to NARS Audacious lipstick in the shade Jane. I love the shade “Jane” but would probably prefer a slightly more matte texture. Well, it isn’t similar in shade. So, the shade “Sensual” is quite light and I find it difficult to carry off even with heavy eye makeup. The particular tone of it does not seem too flattering on my warm skin tone. The texture does not help either, but I will come to that in a minute.
This particular shade would work only for someone with fair to light complexion. For girls with medium tone or deep tone, this will make them look washed out.
Texture: The texture of the lipstick is light but not to the extent that it feels weightless. It is creamy rather than a gel like finish, so while the glide is smooth, it is controllable. The finish itself though touted to be a matte, isn’t quite there. Unless, it was supposed to be the nouvea matte finish which has been doing rounds for over a year now where the word “matte” is just added to the lipstick to appeal to a certain demographic but has not relation to the texture!! 😉 All it seems to mean is that the finish is not shimmery. Anyway, this is a satin to semi-matte lipstick. Well, if it looks like a satin, acts like a satin, applies like a satin… You get the gist!! There is a bit of transfer – but not to bad, which makes me conclude that it is a more semi-matte formula. It isn’t drying but isn’t hydrating either.
Unfortunately for me, the colour did seem to sink into the lip lines in places. Also, post application, if you purse your lips, there is extreme likelihood of lines forming. So, not the ideal texture for me.
The formula isn’t drying in itself but isn’t hydrating either, so if you have a tendency towards dry lips, this may accentuate that by the end of were time, but will not create dry patches on its own. This is surprising considering that the ingredients listed include jojoba, hyaluronic acid and mango seed butter.
Pigmentation: The pigmentation is okay, nothing to write sonnets about. Because I have pigmented lips, if the pigmentation of the lip product is not good, the dark tone of my lip line becomes exceedingly evident. I kept wondering if the issue was with the pigmentation or the the fact that the shade is so light. If I was a novice to this, I would probably blame the shade. Oh! Its a n*de shade, how much pigmentation can you get! However, today, times are different. There are numerous brands who do n*de lipsticks which apply with saturated colour, so when a brand says that its product is “highly pigmented,” I do expect that.
The pigmentation on both lipsticks is excellent – it is rich and opaque. It is super pigmented. The rich pigmentation ensures you get excellent wear because even with eating or sipping through the day, the intensity of the shade may slightly dim, but it is still very much there. Keeping how pigmented and bright the shades are, they were relatively easy to apply and get clean lines. The lipstick moved easily on the lips.
Lasting Power: The wear time is very average, about 3.5-4 hours. You will definitely need re-application post meals. It is easy to re-apply without it looking patchy.
To sum this up for you:
Pros of Laura Mercier Velour Lovers Lip Colour Sensual:
- A peaches-pink-n*de shade, will work for fair to light skin tones.
- Lightweight texture.
- Easy-to-wear semi-matte finish.
- Non-drying texture.
- No feathering or bleeding.
- Very little transference.
- Easy to travel with.
- Free from sulphates.
Cons of Laura Mercier Velour Lovers Lip Colour Sensual:
- Average pigmentation, which in itself is not an issue but a cause of concern when the product is advertised by the brand to be “highly pigmented.”
- The colour sinks into the fine lines.
- Marketed as a matte product, the finish is actually satin to semi-matte.
A 3/5 product.
It seems to be an average product, something you wouldn’t probably mind, if you picked it up forth drugstore (at drugstore prices). However, at this price point, with those claims, the product falls short. Maybe other shades – medium to deep ones – perform better. But, i am not willing to experiment. I cannot really recommend because at this price point, there are way better products in the market.
