Lime Crime Beet It Velvetines Matte Liquid Lipstick Review

Hey lovely ladies,

I’m back with another liquid lipstick review!! I’m so glad there are no emojis on my laptop keyboard because I might have ended up using the “hide my face with hands” emoji way more than I should!! Anyway, let us get on with this review, right?

Lime Crime Beet It Velvetines Matte Liquid Lipstick Review

Product Description:
The original liquid matte lipstick inspired by rose petals. The liquid matte that started it all. Conceptualized and developed by Lime Crime CEO Doe Deere, Velvetines draw inspiration from her favorite flower – a red, red rose. Doe used to cut out rose petals and paste them onto her lips as a child. Richly pigmented, French vanilla-infused formula glides on as a liquid and dries down to a luxurious, velvety matte finish that lasts for hours and hours. Touch-proof, kiss-proof and utterly addictive!  Long lasting matte liquid lipstick in an earthy red hue.

What it does: Makes your lips feel luxurious and velvety, like a rose. Lasts all day with minimal touch-ups, even through meals.

What it won’t do: Bleed or transfer. Dry out properly moisturized lips. Ruin the perfect kiss.

US $20

My Experience with Lime Crime Beet It Velvetines Matte Liquid Lipstick:

I feel like a broken record because I have mentioned this like a hundred times, but I still have to do it for someone who reaches this review through a Google search. While evaluating a product, I do not take price into evaluation of the merits of a product. I believe that a product should be measured for itself, against the claims made by the brand and what else is available in that price point. Whether it is $5 or $20 or $50, is a discussion between you and your wallet.

Having said that, I just want to share one aspect of the pricing with you when you are considering liquid lipsticks. At this price point of about $20, there are about a million different options in the market – Kat Von D, Lime Crime Velvetines, Ofra, Huda Beauty, Beauty Bakerie, Stila, Joeur, Smashbox, Tarte, Too faced, MAC, etc, etc, etc. However, considering the amount of product in a tube – versus what other brand’s offer is a bit of a shocker. Making it way more expensive than other brands in its price range:

For example:

Huda Beauty liquid Matte – $20 – 5ml
Kat Von D Everlasting – $20 – 6.6ml
Lime Crime Velvetine – $20 – 2.6gms

Packaging:  The Lime Crime lipstick comes packaged in the their trademark red boxes with roses on it – the owner’s favourite flower. The box has a strip on it which has the shade name and ingredient mentioned on it and is colour co-ordinated to the shade of lipstick. Makes it easy to locate if you have more than one and if you store them in the box itself.

The liquid lipstick tube itself has a frosted transparent tube with a cap carrying the same pattern as the box – eye-catching and a tad bit girlie.

The applicator is standard doe-foot applicator. Since the size of the tube is small, the length of the wand is also small. This allows you for more precise application. I am able to get good decent clean lines with the wand, I have never needed to use a separate brush for it – even though the brand has advised regarding the use of a brush, if required.

Color: I have wanted this shade for ages!! Beet It and Riot are two shades, which have been on my wish list for as long as I can remember – and are the 2 shades which are constantly sold-out! I guess that just reinforces their popularity and intensifies your desire to get them. I was super excited to finally get “Beet It.” The brand describes the shade as “berry matte.”

Lime Crime Beet It Velvetines Matte Liquid Lipstick wand

I think it has been named very cutely and aptly because it is the vivid colour of Beet juice – minus any muddiness (and the awful taste!!). It is a deep bright berry shade. Berry shades can sometimes run too deep and get vampy or gothic and can be a tad bit difficult to get away with, not this one. This is such a happy bright shade and fairly easy to pull off. I feel this is the kind of shade which will suit everyone – irrespective of fair or deep skin tone. I absolutely adore the shade!

Texture: The texture of the lipstick is consistent to the rest of the line. It is quite liquid-y, I won’t call it creamy. It has good pigmentation and gives full coverage in one swipe. You need to ensure not to pile it on – excess on your lips is what will transfer. Else, the lipstick is fairly transfer proof. Yes, in all the YouTube tutorials, you see plumped up lips with the wand applying the product again and again and again. No! Don’t do that!

The lipstick dries down fairly quickly. Once set, it’s fairly budge-proof. It is not very drying but it’s not hydrating either. If you have any flakes on your lips, it will cling to those patches. However, on its own, it won’t really create flakes or make your lips look prunish. This, along with the Kat Von D’s everlasting liquid lipstick formula are two of my favourite liquid lipstick formulas – from the zillion variants I have tried so far.

Pigmentation: Pigmentation is very good. The liquid lipstick goes on smoothy and settles into a matte finish, covers any lip pigmentation very well. The pigment does not separate out or sink into the lip lines. It applies evenly – there is no streakiness at all.

Lasting Power:  This shade lasts a decent 7 hours or so. The wear time will be governed by what you eat/drink. The oil content of the food will start breaking down the formula. However, even when it starts to disappear from the inner rim of the lips, it appears fairly natural and there is no clumping, etc. Also, you can easily re-apply. You do not have to remove it entirely and then re-apply.

Fragrance: There is a distinct sweet fragrance…like that of vanilla cupcakes. It could definitely be an issue for someone who has a sensitive nose. I am not too fond of it, but find it tolerable because it dissipates fairly quickly.

Pros of Lime Crime Beet It Velvetines Matte Liquid Lipstick:

  • A stunning shade.
  • Lightweight texture.
  • Good pigmentation.
  • Easy to apply with the applicator – very easy to get clean lines.
  • It applies smoothly and evenly.
  • No feathering or bleeding.
  • Decent packaging.
  • Easy to identify colour from the tube itself.
  • Does not flake.
  • Excellent wear time – 7 hours plus.
  • Vegan formula.
  • Not overtly drying. Does not create dry patches post use.

Cons of Lime Crime Beet It Velvetines Matte Liquid Lipstick:

  • Will accentuate dry patches, if they already exist.
  • Fragrance could be an issue for some.
  • The quantity is almost half/less than half of other brands in the market, in the same price range.

IMBB Rating:
A 4.5/5 product. I really do love this shade and recommend it. If you love your berries and purples, you need this shade in your stash. Also, the formula is fab – it is lightweight, pigmented, easy on the lips and stays put. Pretty much checks all the boxes!

    1. Both the shades are in the same ballpark but this one is brighter and has more pink to it. MAC Oh Lady is deeper. In terms of texture, this one is much better – for sure.
