Lime Crime Lulu Velvetines Matte Liquid Lipstick Review

Hey gorgeous gals,

After reviewing the Rose Hip Seed Oil from The Ordinary, I thought let’s do a skincare distress session. Yes, skincare reviews are quite stressful for me. Wanting to put everything down in coherent form can be fairly taxing. Anyway, so I am back with a liquid lipstick review, from the currently trending brand, Lime Crime. By the way, “Currently trending” in my mind, eh! So, let us find out how LuLu performs!

Lime Crime Lulu Velvetines Matte Liquid Lipstick Review

Product Details:
The original liquid matte lipstick inspired by rose petals. The liquid matte that started it all. Conceptualized and developed by Lime Crime CEO Doe Deere, Velvetines draw inspiration from her favorite flower – a red, red rose. Doe used to cut out rose petals and paste them onto her lips as a child. Richly pigmented, French vanilla-infused formula glides on as a liquid and dries down to a luxurious, velvety matte finish that lasts for hours and hours. Touch-proof, kiss-proof and utterly addictive! Long lasting matte liquid lipstick in a peachy beige hue.

What it does: Makes your lips feel luxurious and velvety, like a rose. Lasts all day with minimal touch-ups, even through meals.
Price:
US $20

I have discussed this in my previous reviews as well. So, I will try to keep this short. Yes, in terms of price point, Lime Crime seems to be at par with other brands at the same level. however, if you consider the amount of product you get, Lime Crime is probably one of the most expensive liquid lipsticks in its league.

For details:

Huda Beauty liquid Matte – $20 – 5ml
Kat Von D Everlasting – $20 – 6.6 ml
Lime Crime Velvetines – $20 – 2.6 gm.

Packaging:
The Lime Crime lipstick comes packaged in the their trademark red boxes with roses on it – the owner’s favourite flower. The box has a strip on it which has the shade name and ingredient mentioned on it and is colour coordinated to the shade of the lipstick. Makes it easy to locate if you have more than one and if you store them in the box itself. The liquid lipstick tube itself has a frosted transparent tube with a cap carrying the same pattern as the box – eyecatching and a tad bit girly.

The applicator is a standard doe-foot applicator. Since the size of the tube is small, the length of the wand is also small. This allows you for more precise application. I am able to get good decent clean lines with the wand – I have never needed to use a separate brush for it – even though the brand has advised regarding the use of a brush, if required.

My Experience with Lime Crime Lulu Velvetines Matte Liquid Lipstick:

Color: The brand describes the shade as a “peachy beige hue.” To me, the shade looks like the kiss of death. Yes, it is a chalky-looking creamy-beige colour. On my NC30 skin tone, this look like pastel ghastly beige. It is probably the most unbecoming shade I have from this line. I understand that this is a n*de shade and those can be tricky for me to pull off unless I balance them with heavy eye makeup or something. However, I do have a couple of other n*de shades from this line, which I like and which I will review shortly, but this shade is an absolute no-go. The shade and the texture (which I will discuss subsequently) – both are a big let down. The shade looks like a watered-down version of beige! God! I don’t even drink cold coffee this shade – let alone apply a lipstick in this colour!!

No! “Absolute-no” shade for me. Could anyone carry this off? Honestly, the shade itself could work on a extremely fair-toned complexion or it could work with a similar toned but a tad bit darker lip pencil base. Or it could be used as a highlighting shade (though it is a matte lipstick) in the middle of your lips – with a tad bit darker shade as base – to create a lip contour.

Texture: The texture of the lipstick is definitely not consistent with the line. The pigmentation is too good and the texture kind of thins out as you apply. So, while the pigment doesn’t sink into the fine lines of your lip, it does apply extremely patchy. Please look at the lip swatch for a clear indication about what I am saying.

Could I have camouflaged the lip swatch to make it look even – yes, with enough time and patience, it is possible, but I need to share the truth with you and like they say – a picture is worth a thousand words!

The lipstick dries down fairly quickly. Once set – it’s fairly budge-proof. It is not very drying but it’s not hydrating either. If you have any flakes on your lips, it will cling to those patches. However, on its own, it won’t really create flakes or make your lips look prunish. The brand does suggest hydrating the lips before application.

Pigmentation: Pigmentation is pathetic. The does not cover lip pigmentation well and thins out while applying, looking very patchy.

Lasting Power:  Being a lighter shade, which hasn’t applied evenly – it is unable to give decent wear. About 3.5-4 hours is all I get from it.

Fragrance: There is a distinct sweet fragrance…like that of vanilla cupcakes. It could definitely be an issue for someone who has a sensitive nose. I’m not too fond of it, but find it tolerable because it dissipates fairly quickly.

To sum this up for you:

Pros of Lime Crime Lulu Velvetines Matte Liquid Lipstick:

  • Lightweight texture.
  • Good pigmentation.
  • No feathering or bleeding.
  • Decent packaging.
  • Easy to identify colour from the tube itself.
  • Does not flake.
  • Vegan formula.
  • Not overtly drying. Does not create dry patches post use.
  • Cruelty free.

Cons of Lime Crime Lulu Velvetines Matte Liquid Lipstick:

  • An extremely pale, almost pastel shade.
  • Pigmentation isn’t too good.
  • Applies patchy.
  • Low wear time.
  • Will accentuate dry patches, if they already exist.
  • Fragrance could be an issue for some.
  • The quantity is almost half/less than half of other brands in the market, in the same price range.

IMBB Rating:
1.5/5

Nope! I would suggest to avoid this shade at all costs. This is absolutely not worth it. If you prefer n*de shades, there are better n*des in this line. I hope to review them for you shortly!
