Love Has No Boundaries – Inter Religion Marriages in Bollywood

For centuries, we, in India have been bound by love stories that have always ended in tragedy. That, for a love story to be eternal; it always has to end in the death of the lovers. I have always wondered why? Is it to scare us off the very concept of love? Or to make us believe, that loving someone different from you is a crime for which there is no less a punishment than death? Why aren’t people proud of the fact that their children have loved someone so deeply that they do not need any reason for it? Why do they see it as a rebellion or a betrayal, rather than take pride in the fact, that their children have finally learned to love selflessly, from them, their own parents? That now, they do not need any reason to hate, on the basis of caste, creed, race, region, religion, ethnicity, so and so forth.

We have always taken pride in our rich and diversified film industry, so much so, that, there was a time, when ardent fans absolutely refused to draw the line between reel and real. They accepted everything that was on screen, to be real, as a part of their own life. Everything, except for the concept of love, and the story is no different today, though I would say that education and time has brought some change. Today, we are going to take a look at the mix of these two things. The love stories of some Bollywood couples, who went against the tide, the society, and tied a knot with someone who was from a different culture, a different religion. Some of these love stories were successful, some were not, some ended in tragedy, but most of all, these are the examples of love, that how a simple feeling, can make you feel whole and complete, when you are with that one person, no matter what the society says.

Madhubala – Kishore Kumar

“A heartbreakingly beautiful lady, and a man who could charm his way into anyone’s heart through his romance, voice and jokes. This was a match, which should have lasted years of togetherness, and not just a few achingly painful ones that they deserved.”

Yes, I am talking about the ever gorgeous Madhubala, and her marriage to the multi talented Kishore Da. Some say that Madhubala married Kishore Kumar as a rebound from her breakup from Dilip Kumar, some say that it was a marriage of convenience, but whatever they might say, I will always look back to this one as a deep love, which one man had for a beautiful woman, whose heart belonged to someone else, and her devotion to that one person, in her dying years.

Sunil Dutt – Nargis

“Like a hero that he was, he carried her through the fire, not caring for his own safety, and then, the miracle happened. He pulled the roots of pain that the other man had planted in her heart, and filled the void, with his love for her.”

This was something that happened on the scene of the iconic film “Mother India”, and surprisingly, the actors were playing a role of mother and son on screen. Nargis, aka Fatima Rashid, was rescued from a fire accident that happened on the set, by Sunil Dutt. She was, as is a well known fact, recuperating from a heart break that she had suffered at the hands of Raj Kapoor. But this was not a rebound. The couple, fell deeply in love, with each other, and were together till the final moments of Nargis, who succumbed to cancer in 1981. They called each other “Darlingji” fondly, which further highlights the love and respect the duo had for each other.

Sharmila Tagore – Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi

“The Prince met the Beauty, swept her off her feet, and they lived happily ever after.”

Reads like a fairytale, doesn’t it? This is exactly what happened when the then budding Prince Pataudi of Bhopal, the smashing and budding cricketer of the time, met the reigning “queen of hearts”, the dimpled and shy Sharmila Tagore. Sparks flew, the prince fell in love with the beauty, and soon they tied a knot, after much hall-a-boo on the part of religious clerics. The marriage was a beautiful one, and the begum and nawab lasted together for 42 years, before Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi expired in 2011, due to lung disease. This is one love story, which we all hope to have in our lives.

Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan

“The boy was a muslim, the girl a hindu, and a daughter of an army officer. They met, they fell in love, family repelled against the very idea of reunion, but as fate would have it, they were made for each other.”

Shah Rukh, who was not the celebrated SRK and baadshah of Bollywood then, met Gauri in 1984. They dated each other for a long time, albeit secretly, for the religion factor, before finally mustering up the courage to confess it to their parents, and got married in 1991, conquering all the odds. Their marriage is one of the most successful ones in B town, and also the most looked upon. Gauri stood by Shah Rukh in all his difficult times, and SRK loves his wife to the bits, and can’t stop gushing about her even after a nearly 25 years of togetherness, when most of the couples complain of the withering charm in their relationship. We love this couple.

Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah

Few know how these veteran actors met for the first time. As Naseer sir says in an interview, he saw Ratna Pathak outside a sugarcane juice stall, while talking to the legendary theatre director Satyadev Dubey, in whose play he was playing a part then. He came to know that Ratna Pathak was also a part of it. Naseer Sir could not take his eyes off her the moment he saw her, and then and there, was the moment that he fell in love with her. They worked together, and as fate would have it, tied a knot. Their marriage is still going strong, and the way they played the bickering but loving husband wife in “Jaane Tu Yaa.. Jaane Naa”, they are every bit a cute and loving couple as they seem to be.

Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao

Aamir first met Kiran on the sets of Lagaan, though the latter had seen him and adored him way back when she saw him on the first time in QSQT, on her VCR. Aamir revealed that the earrings that he wore in Lagaan for the character of Bhuvan, were actually Kiran’s, which she playfully asked him back for, when they met for second time during the Goa schedule of “Dil Chahta Hai”. Aamir went ahead with his then wife Reena, and bought them for Kiran. However, the duo got to know each other better, at a much later time, after Aamir was divorced and going through a particular low phase in his life. He wasn’t looking for a long term relationship. But then, again, cupid and fate played their parts, and they moved in together. After getting a nod from Aamir’s children, who had by then understood that Kiran meant a lot more than just a friend to their father, the duo tied the knot. The couple are very much in love, and have a beautiful baby boy together.

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan

Like father, like son. The style icons and the heartthrobs for many, this couple broke the norms, and lived in together for five long years, before plunging into the institution of marriage. They met on the sets of “Tashan”, which though did not set the Box Office on fire, but sure ignited a light in the hearts of Princess Kapoor and Junior Prince Pataudi. After a particularly bitter breakup with Shahid, Kareena found not only solace, but true love in the arms of Saif, and after dating for a long time and living together, the two tied a knot in true blue royal style, a wedding that set a landmark.

Imran Khan and Avantika Malik

Imran Khan broke many hearts, when he married his long time girlfriend, the love of his life, Avantika Malik. 19 year old Imran fell head over heels for the then 16 year old Avantika, and since then, these two have been steady as a rock. A die hard romantic, Imran proposed to Avantika in a true romantic and mushy bollywood style, enough to melt our hearts. He snuck into her house, lit it with candles, and when she came home, surprised her on one knee. O god, what will we give to have such a proposal. Imran married Avantika soon after his debut in B town, and they are happy parents to a baby girl now. He even went out of his way to plan a “baby”moon. Now that is what we call a perfect man.

Ritesh Deshmukh and Genelia D’Souza Deshmukh

They met the first time on the airport, where Ritesh had flown in for the shoot of his debut “Tujhe Meri Kasam”. And guess what, Genelia totally gave him a cold shoulder, which she later on justified saying that she thought that being the CM’s son, he must have been a spoilt brat, which it turned out he wasn’t. While Ritesh is the silent and mature one, the chirpiness and liveliness of the relationship comes from Genelia. Their love for each other could be easily seen in their on screen love story “Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya”. This is, no doubt, the cutest couples in Bollywood, and we wish them a lot many years of happiness together.

Hrithik Roshan and Suzzane Khan

This was one golden love story of a golden couple. And what a love story it was. Roshan junior saw Suzzane and fell in love with her, when he turned his head to look at the most gorgeous woman he had ever set his eyes on. It is said that the traffic signal scene from “Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai”, was actually inspired from that real life scene. Sparks flew when they met again at Hrithik’s sister’s engagement party, and soon after, they started dating. He went down on one knee in front of her, on Valentine’s day, on a beach in Mumbai. Who could say know when a hunk like greek god kneels down to express his love. Suzzane accepted with a tearful smile. They got married in private ceremony which was a lot like a Christian wedding, in a spa.

They say, that all good things come to an end. Maybe, these two gorgeous people were not meant to be long for together. The end came in the form a shocking divorce, which shattered the hearts of many, who had followed this starry eyed love story.

So folks, these were some of the weddings in our own B town, who are a perfect mix and match of cultures, where the partners’ respect and love for each other has no limit or boundary. I, on my part, secretly hope that we can see more and more such weddings. After all, India is a country which boasts of unity in diversity and what can be a better example than cross cultural weddings.
