LUSH Flying Fox Shower Gel and Temple Balm Review

LUSH Flying Fox Shower Gel Review

My first brush with LUSH left me dismayed because even though the alluring smell of their products was wafting throughout the mall, their pricing was obnoxious. At least it was to me then, when I hadn’t found some of my HG products with them. One such beauty is their Flying Fox – The Sex Appeal Shower Gel. Yes, this really is the name of their product, which claims to be (and hopefully makes the user too) lascivious, licentious, vivacious, and insatiable. The shower gel claims to contain the best three ingredients to control PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome – mainly symptoms like irritability and depressive thoughts related to menstrual cycle). It also claims to contain the finest aphrodisiac essential oils, with loads of jasmine thrown in.

Lush Flying Fox

This is not just your typical jasmine fragrance. It is quite sophisticated, especially since it is not a full blown perfume, but just a shower gel. The brown shower gel itself is quite liquidy and flows out easily. It comes in a plastic bottle with a black flip top cap. The smallest size retails for Rs. 530 for 100 grams. A bigger, 250 grams,  for Rs. 1050 and the biggest size of 500 grams for Rs. 1890. I’ve used up a few bottles of this shower gel and it is my go-to shower product for especially tiring or stressful days.

List of ingredients:

Honey, Chinese Angelica; Burdock Root and Jasmine Flower Infusion (Angelica sinensis; Arctium lappa and Jasminum officinale), Water (Aqua), Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Hungarian Honey, Greek Honey, English Honey, Perfume, Jasmine Absolute (Jasminum grandiflorum), Ylang Ylang Oil (Cananga odorata), Cypress Oil (Cupressus sempervirens), Palmarosa Oil (Cymbopogon martinii), Propylene Glycol, Benzyl Alcohol, Geraniol, Limonene, Linalool, Methylparaben

What I like about LUSH Flying Fox Shower Gel:

  • It smells heavenly. The fragrance sure does lift your spirits and at the same time calms you down. It kind of makes me “happy” – that’s the only way I can put it.
  • I don’t know about its PMS alleviating effects, but it the smell is very comforting, so that must help.
  • I can’t say much about its sex appeal claims, but the warm smell of jasmine mixed with honey is powerful enough to get one noticed, at least right after a shower. 😉
  • The fragrance is intense and lingers a while.
  • Unlike some of their other products such as soaps that melt away in the blink of an eye, this baby lasts a while. A 100 grams packed into the smallest size would easily last 2 months of daily use since you only need a little at a time. This makes it one of their most economical buys.
  • The ingredient list boasts of 4 different kinds of honey. That makes it very moisturising. But it does not leave a sticky film on your body, something that you would think a product loaded with honey could do.
  • The bottle has an easy to use flip-top cap that comes open and snaps shut easily.
  • It is a vegetarian product and neither the product nor any of its ingredients are tested on animals. The product itself is tested on humans.

What I don’t like so much about LUSH Flying Fox Shower Gel:

  • The lather is rather sparse, so it does not spread easily all over the body. Due to this, you may sometimes end up using more than you want to.
  • A body lotion to layer with it would have made the fragrance longer lasting.
  • If the price tag is a botherance, then it cannot be used as generously as one would a cheaper shower gel.

All in all, a luxurious shower experience with this one and I would say it is an all-round winner.

I would have loved to own a perfume that smelled like this. But they don’t have a spray version of it. Instead, they have a temple balm with the same fragrance. It is called LUSH Flying Fox Temple Balm. The LUSH UK website has this to say about the balm: “Fills stroppy, moody people full of the joys of spring. Flying Fox balm was invented by Mark to turn stroppy, moody women into relaxed, calm, serene ones. He perceived a need for an unbelievably beautiful, jasmine and ylang mood improving balm for women. Strangely, although we ought to be cross with him for such an outrageous assumption, once we put it on and inhaled the gorgeous scent, we didn’t mind any more. We’ve even been using it as a fragrance.”

Lush Flying Fox

The website also tells you how to use their temple balms – “They are for putting on your temples – wrists and throat too – and gently change your mood. Sniff them right up into your brain’s scent detection centre. It’s the only place that nerve endings are in direct contact with the air. Dab a little on the inside of your nostrils.”

Alas, the balm version didn’t go down well with my brain’s scent detection centre. Applying it on my temples gave me irritated eyes and a headache. So I’ve used this balm only on my wrists and throat. Another thing is that it hardens up after a while and then you have to almost scrape it out and rub into your skin. So I did not repurchase it. Still, if you love the smell of Flying Fox, then it might be worth checking out this temple balm as well. The only glitch is, it looks like the temple balm is no longer offered in Indian stores.

  1. the shower gel sounds sexy, Sonal… 😉 😉 :-* :-*

But not the temple balm, really.. Reminds me of Amrutanjan!!! 😛

  2. O, for once I wish I had done this one 😉 but Sonal, you have given it a fair one 🙂
both are my all-time favs for a few yrs now. always have a bottle of the bath gel stacked. awesome for those irritable times. Not too sure the temple balm does anything to the sense and sensibilities but nevertheless a LOVELY fragrance on both – esp for those who like flavors of jasmine!
.-= Gaea´s last blog ..Maybelline Color Sensational – Creamy sweets! =-.

  3. Lovely review, Sonal. I like my shower gels to be very lathery though. But its description sounds heavenly. I would sure like to try this out. Haven’t got even one Lush product so far.

    1. Hey Sabrina, it’s worth checking out.

It doesn’t lather well and that also makes it unsuitable as a shaving aid.
