Lush Soaps Review: Honey I Washed the Kids and Demon in the Dark

Honey I Washed the Kids Soap

Price: Rs 330 for 100 gm honeysoap

Lush says β€œThe irresistible toffee and honey soap. Once you’ve sniffed it, you’ve got to have it. On paper, it’s difficult to portray the full effect of this honeycomb and toffee scented soap. People who fully intended to walk past a Lush shop find themselves unable to resist its tempting fragrance. They inhale, drool, pick up a big chunk and join the queue for the till. It’s hard not to buzz about this one.”

Ingredients: Honey Water (Aqua), Propylene Glycol, Rapeseed Oil; Coconut Oil (Brassica napus; Cocos nucifera), Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Water (Aqua), Sodium Stearate, Sodium Hydroxide, Perfume, Beeswax (Cera alba), Sweet Wild Orange Oil (Citrus sinensis), Bergamot Oil (Citrus Aurantium bergamia), Aloe Vera Extract (Aloe barbadensis), Glycerine, Sodium Chloride, EDTA, Tetrasodium Editronate, Gardenia Extract (Gardenia jasminoides), Titanium Dioxide, Limonene, Linalool, Benzyl Benzoate This soap is off-white or light yellow in color with an orangish-yellow layer on top with a honeycomb print on it. This piece is slightly less than 100 gms in size. I actually could not make out the smell of this very clearly in the Lush shop as there was already a very strong smell in the shop, as usual. When I came home I could smell it and I am not kidding when I say that it smells exactly like Kismi toffee bar. I am not sure I love the smell too much, but it is nice if you like the smell of toffee. I could not detect a honey scent, just toffee. kismi toffee Bar

It was a little difficult to get a good lather from this soap, and it melts away quickly so make sure it is dry between uses and don’t keep it in a normal soap dish or exposed to water drops if you want it to last. I cut small pieces to use and store the rest in the fridge. It does not dry my skin out but it does not do anything great for it either. A faint smell lingers for a few hours after using it which is quite pleasant and not overpowering.

Pros of Lush Honey I Washed the Kids Soap:

  • Smells nice if you like smelling like toffee πŸ™‚ , kids may enjoy using it
  • Not an overpowering smell after stepping out of the bath
  • Skin is not left feeling dry or stretched like other soaps
  • Environmentally friendly – no packaging

Cons of Lush Honey I Washed the Kids Soap:

  • Does not lather too well
  • Melts away quickly, so it is expensive for the quantity you get
  • Cutting up the soap makes it difficult to use, but is a good way to make it last
  • The honeycomb layer on top keeps falling off. I don’t know the purpose of this layer. It smells of honey but you can’t really use it on your skin. It feels like a piece of plastic.

honeycomb-bits Would I purchase this again? Probably not. I may give some other Lush soaps a shot sometime in the future, but I am done with them for now.

My rating: :star: :star: :star:

Demon in the Dark Soap

Price: Rs 290 for 100 gm Demon_in_the_Dark Lush says β€œIt’s not really a demon, it’s a bit of a dark angel: dark green, wrapped in a layer of black wax, which you peel off before you use or you won’t get clean. Demon in the Dark has fresh, minty scent with just a hint of sweetness from the fresh apple juice.”

Ingredients: Rapeseed Oil; Coconut Oil (Brassica napus; Cocos nucifera), Glycerine, Water (Aqua), Organic Apple Juice (Pyrus malus), Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Stearate, Mint (Mentha piperita), Spearmint Oil (Mentha spicata), Clove Bud Oil (Eugenia caryophyllus), Peppermint Oil (Mentha piperita), Sodium Chloride, EDTA, Tetrasodium Editronate, Eugenol, Limonene, Perfume, Gardenia Extract (Gardenia jasminoides), Colour 42045

The bar is green in color (mine was a little darker than the one in the picture) with a layer of black wax that needs to be β€œpeeled off” according to Lush. Now I tried peeling it off, thinking it would peel off smoothly in one go. Not so. I ended up getting black wax in my fingernails which was really difficult to get rid off and ended up chipping my nail polish. The wax was stuck to the soap very firmly. I finally cut the wax off, also cutting off a bit of soap in the process. I have no clue what this black wax layer is doing in the soap. It seems to have absolutely no purpose – does not even smell of anything.

This soap smells like mint – more specifically, like toothpaste. Again I could not really detect the smell of this very clearly in the Lush shop. Maybe next time I will take the product a good 50 meters away from the shop, smell it and then decide whether I should buy it or not. I had a very difficult time getting it to lather and had to rub very hard against my skin to get the smallest amount of lather.

Pros of Demon in the Dark Soap:

  • Smell may wake you up in the morning, just like toothpaste does.
  • Not an overpowering smell after stepping out of the bath.
  • Lasts long so value for money if you actually like it.
  • Environmentally friendly – no packaging.

Cons of Demon in the Dark Soap:

  • Does not lather well at all
  • Could not detect an apple smell in my bar, just a toothpaste smell
  • THE WAX IS SO ANNOYING. Sorry I just had to say that.
  • Does nothing great for the skin

I actually threw this bar out before it was half finished. Tried using it as a hand wash soap but found it so difficult to lather that I just gave up. I would obviously never purchase it again. My rating: :star: Overall, I would say that except for the smells, there is nothing great about these two soaps. I am going back to my good old Body Shop shower gel. If you must use soap, I would prefer Indian handmade soaps like Khadi or even the Lotus Herbals soaps.

Have you tried Lush Soaps?

  1. Woww…Honey I Washed the Kids is my favorite favorite soap from Lush. Most Lush soaps don’t lather excessively. The problem, of course, gets worsened if you live in a place with hard water..like at my place..its hard water. Still I just got used to the idea of less lather, and I am perfectly happy with the soap. Plus I have very dry skin problems and that’s how I started using Lush soaps in the first place, and I think the fact that they don’t lather so much is what makes them less drying. The same soap used at my mom’s place – they have realllly clean water there – lathers pretty well πŸ™‚

As for those decorations on top…never did like them..in most of their soaps its just a pain, and I just take them off and throw them if I can. The SA at one shop told me that honeycomb thingie is some kind of wax and I can use it on myself to moisturize… :sidefrown: I havent tried it, but I am VERRRY skeptical about most things these Lush SAs tell!!
    .-= Radhika´s last blog ..Chanel Rouge Coco – Venise – Review-Swatch =-.

    1. Honey I Washed the Kids is a nice soap, but I just wish it did more for the price you pay.

Yes I live in a place with hard water πŸ™‚

    2. And don’t even get me started on the SAs.

I avoid places now (Health and Glow) because of my fear of SA attack.

        1. Morning. πŸ™‚ It’s pouring here. It’s going to be a chai pakora kind of a day. πŸ™‚

Rains bring smiles, loving it! πŸ™‚

  2. can i ask ??? m i the unwanted one? why never takes my name..
    take it now
otherwise will come in ur dreams and haunttttttt

  3. Hehehehhe…Rashmi…everyone here all self-invited only..we all are going to land up at Rati’s place one day. She is safe now only at least from me because I am in Bangalore.

  4. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: I know it’s an open invitation. I am so scared of flying…:( I fin it creepy.. :tremble: And my ears pain like hell while landing. :curse:

    1. rati here rads is talking abt one incident which happened with me…
it was when i didnt had baby and everybody kept bugging me..
once i was flying from hyd to mumbai and this old lady was sitting next to me and i was just thinking abhi kuch boligee .. and see that aunty asked just then ” u have kids?” i said yes “TWO” she said where are they ? i replied with in-laws … hahahah thankfully my 1 1/2 hr journey went quitelly otherwise she would have given lecture and all ahhhhhh

  5. I think FabIndia soaps would be a better option since i want my soap/body wash to have lots of fragrance – esp the wild rose, the fragrance is so long lasting that i can feel it even when we open the bathroom door after many hours…quite surprsing!!

    1. Shyna, Lush soaps smell very strong too (bathroom-filling type) πŸ™‚

I haven’t tried the FabIndia soaps though, so cant compare.

  6. hmmm, I’ve always wanted to try Lush soaps..now I know not to try these 2 at least :), probably buy the fabindia ones tho.. which ones do you guys recommend? they have so many different kinds

    1. Renuca I have used Fab india’s wild rose soap. Actually that is the only one I keep repurchasing. πŸ˜› I love its fragrance.

It’s a little drying for my dry skin but I anyway follow up with the moisturizer. The soaps finish up pretty soon.

But overall you wouldn’t regret buying them. Infact, I am quite fond of them. πŸ™‚

  7. I have never used Lush soaps. But one of these days I would have fallen for these exciting names, goody good ingredients and tempting looking bars.

Glad you did the review. now I know what NOT to pick. πŸ™‚

  8. Hey gurlz…missed all this fun……today I was busy solving a saas-bahu jagda….jst got free……..Sunayana…..I have the same problem as Radhika, we have a very salty heavy water in which these precious soaps won;t lather and that would irritate me mighty…..otherwise that Kismi bar kind of smell tempts me no end….Ricinus Rads….lets land at Rati’s place one day and we can kill Sanjeev’s cockroaches and lizards while he is cooking “aloo fare” for all of us πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

    1. He has one pet cockroach that keeps giving me weird looks. :reallyangry: :reallyangry: I think I would only end up killing him one day. :vampire:

  9. Thx Rati, will definitely try the wild rose altho I too have dry skin and am too lazy to use moisturiser after my bath πŸ˜€

  10. I love honey I washed the kids .. it leaves a great scent on my body even after I take a shower.. I like rockstar too but it only smells nice during the shower…

I BOUGHT BUFFY the backside slayer ( butter bar) .. and the whole thing melted in the heat here!!!!! .. I asked those dumb people working at lush whether I had to keep it in the fridge they said noo…

I bought fresh farmacy and coalface … <3<3<3 LOVING THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Yes I have had that melting experience too, with a massage bar. But I am moving to the US soon, so hopefully it will be fine there. I plan to keep it in the fridge the minute I get home after buying it πŸ˜›

I was eyeing Rockstar at the Lush store the other day but picked up Honey instead. I think if I do buy another Lush soap, Rockstar will be the one.
