MAC Fashion Boost Pro Longwear Lip Pencil Review

Hello lovely ladies,

Today’s review is on yet another lip pencil from MAC; however, this is from the “Pro Longwear” range of lip pencils. This was more of an impulse buy for me, so let’s see how this one performed.
MAC Fashion Boost Pro Longwear

Product Description:
A new form of long-wearing lip pencil technology that saturates lips in rich colour.  A new generation of long-wearing lip pencil technology. Glides on fluidly and adheres instantly. Defines the lips with an instant release of rich, saturated colour. The transfer-proof formula prolongs the hours between reapplication.

Key Claims and Benefits:

  • Long-wearing, 8 hours.
  • Smudge-proof.
  • Transfer-resistant.
  • Non-feathering.
  • Provides stay-true colour.

Label

Apply directly to lips before or after any MAC lipstick or lip glass collection. Sharpen with pencil sharpener/small.

Price:
$20 in US/INR 1800 for 1.2 gm (compared to INR 1400 for 1.45 gm of a regular regular MAC Lip Pencil), which means you are paying more for less amount of product. So, does it give bang for buck, let’s find out.

Packaging:  The lip pencil is a regular sharpen-able wooden pencil, which comes packaged in a black cardboard box. The lip pencil has a regular plastic cap. There is nothing fancy here in terms of packaging, neither is there any smudger or sharpener along with this. The pencil bottom is colour coded corresponding to the product shade, so it’s easy to identify in the stash.

My Experience with MAC Fashion Boost Pro Longwear Lip Pencil:

Like I have already mentioned, this one was an impulse buy. I was at the MAC counter in the “duty free area” looking for the new matte range of lipsticks; however, those were not yet launched. So, I ended up picking two Prolongwear lip pencils instead – “Fashion Boost” and “Absolutely It” (reviewed for you last September).

Color: The shade “Fashion Boost” is described as a “bright purple cream.” It’s a medium dark bright purple with a hint of pink. I have swatched it against similar shades from the MAC range – MAC Heroine and MAC Magenta. There are mere nuances of difference in the color, but all 3 are different from each other. However, do you really need all 3 in your kitty? Well, if you intend to use them as lip color, you may appreciate the difference in colors. However, if you intend to use them only as base for a lipstick, all three might work for the same set of lip colours – purples, violets, magentas and fuchsia.

Texture: The texture for this one turned out to be a bit of a mystery. Initially, it seemed fairly dry and kind of tugged and pulled at my lips. Honestly, it was a pain to work with. Since I had picked it up swatching it on my hand and not really applied it on to my lips, I kind of started wondering if I had picked up a dud. Then, I did something we always do when we try a lip pencil in MAC, I just sharpened it a bit. Guess what? Smooth ride there on! The lip liner was creamy smooth and applied neatly, with full opaque coverage and without any tug or pull.

Further, it stays fairly comfortable, I did not feel the death-defying grip of dryness or the urge to reach for the lip balm either.

Pigmentation: The pigmentation is great. The coverage it provides is better than what the regular MAC lip pencils do. The colour is fully opaque hiding all pigmentation. In the OOTD, I have applied it with a light hand. You can totally deepen the colour by building it up a bit.

Staying Power:  The product lasted about 7 hours or so; light snacks had little impact on it, but an oily meal was not forgiving. It took away most of the colour. The best part is that it’s kissproof! It did not transfer onto my cherubs cheeks and I am one happy mommy! You do need to take it off with the oil-based remover at the end of the day. However, it did not leave dry patches on my lips – like “Absolutely It” had done.

To sum this up for you:

Pros of MAC Fashion Boost Pro Longwear Lip Pencil:

  • A beautiful bright deep purple.
  • Lightweight matte texture.
  • Precise application.
  • Great pigmentation.
  • The pencil applies easily, it was quite smooth and creamy.
  • No feathering or bleeding.
  • Surprisingly, not too drying.
  • Convenient packaging, easy to apply and easy to carry, doesn’t take much space in the bag.

Cons of MAC Fashion Boost Pro Longwear Lip Pencil:

  • Considering the matte finish, would suggest exfoliating lips before applying.
  • Product wastage during sharpening.

IMBB Rating:
4.75/5

Overall, this is a lovely purple and makes for a great shade with or without a lipstick on top. I have tried a few Pro Longwear lip pencils now and feel that they really vary in texture. So, try the shade you want to pick before you buy it. Also, I feel that the product exposed to air tends to dry off, sharpening it a little, makes loads of difference to the texture as well as the overall application. Having said that, the points to consider are –
1. The wastage of product and
2. The price of the prolongwear range.

In the swatch picture, I have shared the swatches of similar shades of lip pencils from MAC for your reference. These are – Magenta, Heroine, Fashion Boost and Nightingale (will be reviewing shortly). Out of these, Fashion Boost is the only Pro Longwear lip pencil and Nightingale is more distinctly berry-ish compared to the more purple and purple-pink hues of the other shades.
