Today, I will be reviewing a product from a brand that’s a popular favourite..MAC! They released their Retro Matte Liquid lipsticks sometime last year and they’ve been a great hit! The range consists of an eclectic mix of colours and I will reviewing the shade “High Drama.” I have to say I love how MAC names their shades, the colours go perfectly with the names.

For those who prefer timeless glamour to all- out flash, matte reigns supreme, M.A.C introduces a twist on this classic texture with robustly saturated shades of Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour. Which shade you choose, all promise one thing : a splash of colour in a liquid- suede finish that is impossible to forget.
My Experience with MAC High Drama Retro Matte Liquid Lip Colour:
I actually bought one of these retro matte liquid lip colors, “Oh Lady” for my sister and she loved it so much that I went ahead and bought this colour afterwards.
“High Drama” is a deep, cool-toned berry shade. In the tube, it looks more burgundy, but on the lips, it’s a reddish plum type of colour. It looks absolutely gorgeous. like a classy vamp. My mother very promptly said the shade was rather sultry. It flatters my NC42 skin tone beautifully and it would look even better on darker skin tones. Light-skinned women who are looking for a bold statement colour should definitely try this shade out.
The packaging is similar to the standard lipstick bullets by MAC. The top half is the same as the MAC lipsticks and the bottom is a glass tube. The wand itself has a glass rod with the applicator at the tip. It’s basic but easy to carry around. The name of the shade is printed at the bottom of the tube.
The consistency is pretty decent actually. It’s not too buttery but not too dry to apply either. It goes on smoothly but I would strongly recommend a lip liner before this as the product tends to feather along the lip lines. You also have to apply quickly as once taken out of the tube as the product dries to matte pretty fast.
The applicator is like a doe foot one but in a tear drop shape and the pointed edge definitely makes it easy to apply along the outer corners of the lips and to perfect the lip shape, but it still feathers, so if you want a defined look, I suggest you use a lip liner.
The colour payoff is in one word.. Amazing! I love how pigmented it is and how opaque the colour is. I have tried a lot of liquid matte lipsticks, but this one is the most opaque I have ever seen. It completely covers any pigmentation on the lips. However there is a slight scent to it that puts me off. It’s a mix of vanilla and some chemical, but after applying, the smell disappears completely.
As far as the staying power is concerned, I have noticed that this is pretty long lasting too. It lasts for around 6-7 hours even with light meals. And even if it fades a little, it looks like a lovely plum color. At no point does this lipstick completely fades away even after 12 hours of wear. With a heavy meal, it will probably last 4-5 hours easily.
The texture is not too heavy so you can easily opt for a touch up without the lipstick getting very cakey and heavy. Other than that it doesn’t bleed or flake, it stays put till you take off all of it with a makeup remover.
Pros of MAC High Drama Retro Matte Liquid Lip Colour:
- Great staying power.
- Gorgeous colour.
- Lightweight on lips.
- Highly pigmented, so worth the price and amount of product.
Cons of MAC High Drama Retro Matte Liquid Lip Colour:
- Slightly drying, use a lip balm underneath.
- Smudges at the edges of the lips when product is applied with the applicator.
Would I Repurchase MAC High Drama Retro Matte Liquid Lip Colour?
All in all, I love the colour and the formula a lot and I would definitely repurchase this or any other colour from this range.’
