MAC Lip Pencil Lasting Sensation Review

Hello ladies,

Another lip product review for you today – this one is from the much-loved brand – MAC, and it’s a lip pencil. I had been looking for a bright orange lip pencil for some time, mainly to be used as a base for my orange-toned lipsticks. Finally, I shortlisted 2 shades – “Lasting Sensation” and “Fruit Cocktail.” This review is on the shade “Lasting Sensation,” which is the more reddish-orange version of the two.

Product Description:
A pencil designed for shaping, lining or filling in the lip. Lip pencils have a smooth, creamy texture that is perfect for lining the lips or filling them in. They are long-lasting and available in a wide selection of colors that work well with many different lipstick shades. The color of the lip pencils is protected by vitamin E, which acts as an antioxidant, and they contain emollients that moisturize the lips. Lip Pencils can be worn alone, with lipstick or lip glass.

My Experience with MAC Lip Pencil Lasting Sensation:

Packaging: The lip pencil is a regular sharpen-able wooden pencil, which comes packaged in a black cardboard box. The good thing with the packaging is that the cap is snuggly secure and doesn’t come off easily. Also, the pencil bottom is colour coded corresponding to the product shade, so it is easy to identify in the stash. As is usual with pretty much all MAC pencils, it does not come with a sharpener. This product does not qualify for “Back 2 MAC” policy.

Personally, I used to prefer twist-up pencils way more than these sharpen-able ones. However, over time, I have come to love this packaging more as it allows the product inside to stay stable and creamier for longer, without drying up. All you need to do is to sharpen the pencil to release the fresh  product inside.

Shade:  The shade is described by MAC as a “bright coral” and is a slightly orange leaning towards coral. The shade looks fairly orange when swatched next to the shade “Redd” (used for comparison). On its own, it is quite a bright coral color. Used as a base, it works well for both – my coral lipsticks as well as my orange-toned ones. This is the kind of a shade which would probably look pretty across skin tones – as long as you are comfortable with a bright lip.

MAC Lip Pencil Lasting Sensation tip

Texture: The texture for this one is a tad bit drying. This would probably come as no surprise to someone used to MAC lip pencils. I used to have a tough time using MAC pencils as they would skip during application. I have learnt two things to optimise application with them by watching MAC artists in play – one is to sharpen the pencil little before application – to relate the more creamier layer of product than what is on top. The second one is to use the pencil in small strokes rather than longer ones. So, do not attempt to create a lip circumference in one smooth movement – it will not happen. Use smaller strokes and line the lip area through numerous small movements instead. Despite this, do note that the product will skip a little. So, well-prepped lips will always help, else it will catch onto all the dry patches. It does start getting uncomfortable around 4-5 hours of wear.

Pigmentation:  The pigmentation is decent but I feel the shade tends to apply unevenly and is a tad bit patchy – no matter how much time and effort you put into it. Keeping this in mind, it would work better as something to be used as a base for lipsticks, rather than a standalone product. It hides lip pigmentation well.

Lasting Power: The product lasted about 7-7.5 hours+ on me post which it started fading. As was expected, by the end, there are dry patches and clinging. If topped with a lipstick, it pretty much stays put the entire day unless you have a oily meal.

FOTD: The pictures I have shared are of lip swatches and FOTD with just the liner.

Pros of MAC Lip Pencil Lasting Sensation:

  • A beautiful bright coral colour.
  • Lightweight, matte texture.
  • Precision application.
  • The pencil does big a little while application. Do note the points I have mentioned under the “texture” section to ensure better application on the lips.
  • No feathering or bleeding.
  • Good pigmentation.
  • Convenient packaging, easy to apply and easy to carry, doesn’t take much space in the bag.

Cons of MAC Lip Pencil Lasting Sensation:

  • Not a hydrating formula; however, considering they are supposed to provide an iron-clad base for lipstick – one kind of expects them to be drying.
  • Tends to cling to dry patches, would suggest exfoliating lips before applying.
  • Applies patchy.

IMBB Rating:
3.5/5

It is a pretty shade. If you are looking for something to use as a stand-alone product, I would advise against this because on its own, it can be fairly drying over time. Plus it does not have the smoothest of application. From a distance, it looks okay, but up close, it’s not flattering. However, if the intent is to use it as base for a lipstick, i’d say, go of it, because I haven’t really come across too many bright coral lip liners, and it does add longevity to lipsticks applied on top.
