Today’s review is on a lip pencil from MAC. Everyone here knows my love for hot pink and purples shades, so getting a base color for my innumerable lipsticks was badly needed. So, I decided to pick “Magenta” from MAC’s huge collection of lip liners. Let’s see how this one performed.
A pencil designed for shaping, lining or filling in the lip. Lip pencils have a smooth, creamy texture that is perfect for lining the lips or filling them in. They are long-lasting and available in a wide selection of colors that work well with many different lipstick shades. The color of lip pencils is protected by vitamin E, which acts as an antioxidant, and they contain emollients that moisturize the lips. Lip Pencils can be worn alone, with lipstick or lip glass.
Packaging: The lip pencil is a regular sharpen-able wooden pencil, which comes packaged in a black cardboard box. The good thing with the packaging is that the plastic cap is snugly secure and doesn’t come off easily. Also, the pencil bottom is colour coded corresponding to the product shade, so it’s easy to identify in the stash. As is usual with pretty much all MAC pencils, it does not come with a sharpener.
My Experience with MAC Magenta Lip Pencil:
Color: The shade is described by MAC as a “vivid pinkish-purple” is actually a nice, almost fuchsia pink with a bit of duochrome effect, which is so unique in itself and even more so in a lip pencil. The colour looks beautiful in itself and pairs very well with all cool-toned pinks and with purples. So, this can form a base for any of these lipsticks for instance – Girl About Town, Heroine, Flat Out Fabulous, even Rebel. Even on its own, it looks beautiful, especially with the duochrome effect it has. So, you can just top it up with a lip gloss and be good to go!
Texture: The texture for this one was quite smooth, unlike that of Candy Yum Yum. I am not saying “buttery smooth,” but it was fairly creamy and did not tug. Well-exfoliated and prepped lips would obviously work better with this. Honestly, it felt pretty okay for about 2.5-3 hours, post which it started feeling drying, when used on its own. With a lipstick or lip gloss on top, it’s easier to manage.
Pigmentation: The pigmentation is good. The lip liner covered all my lip pigmentation well and provided a fairly even base.
The pictures I have shared are of lip swatches and FOTD with just the liner.
Lasting Power: The product lasted about 6-6.5 hours on me, on its own, but it did get very drying and clingy by the end of that time. With a lipstick applied on top, it increased the longevity of the lipstick by a couple of hours. Also, it leaves a nice soft pink stain on your lips.
To sum this up for you:
Pros of MAC Magenta Lip Pencil:
- A beautiful bold color.
- Lightweight matte texture.
- Precision application.
- The pencil applies without tug or pull!
- No feathering or bleeding.
- Convenient packaging, easy to apply and easy to carry, doesn’t take much space in the bag.
Cons of MAC Magenta Lip Pencil:
- Not a hydrating formula; however, considering this is supposed to provide an iron-clad base for lipstick, one kind of expects them to be drying.
- Tends to cling to dry patches, would suggest exfoliating lips before application.
Do I Recommend MAC Magenta Lip Pencil?
Absolutely. The shade is uniquely duochrome, and as a base, it’s quite versatile, since it works well with all cool-toned pinks and purples.
One thing I would like to add here – you sometimes come across the same product being too drying for someone, while it isn’t as drying for others. This could well be because of the lip condition of the person or the weather conditions since lips can get quite drying in the winters. However, I feel, some times it’s also because the product that you have is from old stock. So, when it comes to buying lip pencils and eye pencils, try to ensure that you pick product, which is fairly fresh stock, to get optimum quality. Also, some times we feel that a lip/eye pencil suddenly seems very drying though it might have been okay during the last use. In that case, just sharpen it a little, this releases, fresher product from the base, which hopefully, will be creamier than the top layer and easier to apply.
