Like Rashmita, I too gave into the MAC-madness and bought a couple of shades from the newly-launched Retro Matte Liquid Lip Colour range. Thought I’d put up the reviews quickly so that you can decide what colours you want – before the colours sell out. Yes, this line is permanent, but you know how prompt MAC is with replenishing their stocks.
A lip colour that provides a splash of colour in a liquid-suede finish that lingers. For those who prefer timeless glamour to all-out flash, matte reigns supreme. M∙A∙C introduces a twist on this classic texture with robustly saturated shades of Retro Matte Liquid lip color. Whichever shade you choose, all promise one thing: a splash of colour in a liquid-suede finish that is impossible to forget.
US $20/INR 1800
The lip colour comes packaged in a lip gloss kind of packaging – the way most liquid lipsticks come. The thing which catches your eye instantly is that the cap which holds the wand has been kept similar in looks to the cap of a regular MAC bullet.
That provides an instant connect because honestly, there is nothing in the packaging which would remind you it’s a luxury product. The tube is transparent, so it’s easy to identify the colour. The bottle comes packaged in the standard MAC black outer box. The applicator is a soft. Since the applicator wand is short, it helps in precise application.
My Experience with MAC Oh Lady Retro Matte Liquid Lip Colour:
Color: The shade, described as “deep wine” – is a dark berry shade. In looks, it can range from “an evening out” to “serious vampy” affair. This isn’t a shade you put on while on the run. This needs serious concentration to apply because mistakes can be glaringly visible and difficult to correct. I would suggest you to line your lips with a lip pencil first, so that you can get the lip shade right.
Texture: The lipstick feels creamy and not as lightweight as certain other formulas in the market. It sets fairly quickly and adjusts well to layering. It sets to a totally matte finish. This formula needs prepped up lips. So, you do need to exfoliate and moisturize your lips else, you will not be able to manage wearing it. The good thing is that even though the formula is not the lightest, it does not crack or flake off not, nor does it bleed.
The product is easy to apply from the applicator. It goes on smooth and evenly – no patchiness whatsoever.
Pigmentation: Pigmentation is quite good. A single layer isn’t really patchy but needs a little coating to become even and push the colour. You cannot afford to make mistakes with applying this. It needs an oil-based makeup remover to totally come off. So, if you are trying to correct mistakes, you will end up spoiling the base makeup around your lips. So, the best option is to use a lip liner – so that you paint within the lines.
Staying Power: This part is interesting! The lipstick will stay with you through the whole day. So, I apply it at say 11 am and it’s still there at 11 pm; however, yes, there is a “however” – with passage of time, the formula starts breaking down. It starts disappearing from the corners of your mouth and the inner rim of your lips. So, yes, while the colour is still there in full pigmentation – the places where it’s missing are glaringly obvious because the color is so deep and dark.
Another thing to note, after 6 hours or so, it starts making your lips dry. So, while you do not need to rush for a lip balm, your lips develop dry patches and the lipstick sticks to these, making them more obvious. Also, as time passes, the formula starts breaking down and gets powdery – you can feel it on your lips. Bottom line – You may be able to push your luck with wear time on this one – the colour will still be around, but it will definitely not be a pretty sight. So, realistically, this gives you about 6-7 hours of actual wear. Also, as with all lipsticks, what you eat/drink in between, will also effect the longevity. More oil in the food equals to quicker break down of the formula. You can of course do touch up. The colour will blend through with touch up. You don’t really need to take it all off.
You will need an oil-based makeup remover to get it totally off your lips.

Honestly, I feel that MAC jumped on the “liquid lipstick” bandwagon way too late. If you are a serious liquid lipstick lover and have tried the other formulas in the market – you know there is a huge range, a number of finishes and various price points available. So, from generally acceptable shades of Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro to almost bohemian gothic outlandish shades of Jeffree Star to some interesting and highly sought after shades of KVD – you really have a HUGE range on colours already available in the market. From the Too Faced Melted Lipsticks to OCC Lip Tars to Anastasia Beverly Hills – you have a huge range of applicators possible. From pocket-friendly Colourpop lipsticks to up market YSL Glossy stains or Ofra lipstick, there are varying price points available. There is just about everything available. So, when you come out with a product – you really need to up your game. I don’t think MAC has been able to do that. None of the colours available in the range are unique by any standard. You have seen them time and time again. The formula is not the best either. I’m sure they will still do well in India because there aren’t many serious liquid lipstick options available here and the product is fairly decent – even if not the best.
Would I Repurchase/Recommend MAC Oh Lady Retro Matte Liquid Lip Colour?
I don’t think so. I like the colour and will enjoy wearing it, but at that price point, there are definitely better options in the market.
