MAC Oil Control Lotion Review

By Ritu Rajput from The Indian Beauty Blog

Hey Everyone!

Raise your hands up, those with oily skin! Well, I can virtually imagine a lot of you lovelies raising your hands, mostly in anticipation of a product which can help with oily skin. Today, I am reviewing the Oil Control Lotion from MAC. If not for IMBB, I would never have been introduced to this brand and then I got so hooked onto MAC, that there’s no looking back now. Anyway, let’s head on to the review, I know you must be curious by now.

Product Description:

The ultimate no-shine base for oil control. Natural exfoliants help improve texture and clarity. Lightweight and instantly matte, bonds makeup to the skin for fewer touch-ups. Oil-free hydration with natural colloidal minerals and antioxidants. Formulated to keep skin pH-balanced. Use day or night.

Rs. 1850 for 50 ml.

The MAC Oil Control Lotion comes packed in the regular MAC skin care packaging (the carton is white on the outside, black on the inside, as opposed to the MAC makeup products packaging, which is black outside and white inside). Inside, the bottle is an opaque, pearly white bottle with a black cap. You need to slide the top of the cap sideways to unlock the mouth of the dispenser. Since the dispenser does not have a cover, some product always remains there, and on coming with air, the lotion dries up there. Next time when you dispense, you get some of that dried lotion too. This is something I don’t really like. Because of the slider-lock, the bottle is travel friendly, though.

Availability in India: Only at MAC’s stores

My Experience with MAC Oil Control Lotion:

Okay, so the fact that I have very oily skin must be apparent by now, because I am reviewing an oil-control lotion. I bought the MAC Oil Control Lotion last October, and have used it quite a lot since then. My experience with the product will be based on usage through the end of hot days in October to the chilly Delhi winters, and now the start of summers again.

The lotion is white in color, with a slightly runny consistency. It is water-based, spreads easily onto the skin without leaving any oily traces behind. It gets absorbed completely, and has a very pleasant green-apple fragrance (one of the reasons why I bought this lotion!)

Efficacy wise, in winters, the lotion kept my skin oil free (yes, my skin is oily in winters too) for almost the entire day, say 10 hours. But ever since it has started to get warm here, I have noticed that it works for just about 3-4 hours on me when worn alone. I do need to wear a mattifying primer over it, and also touch-up with powder after 3-4 hours. The lotion, however, does not disturb make-up, rather wears well with make-up.

I have noticed my MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation stays on for longer when I use this lotion as a moisturiser (before the primer).

The product claims to improve skin texture, but I have not noticed any remarkable changes in my skin.

Pros of MAC Oil Control Lotion:

  • Smooth lotion, spreads easily.
  • Gets absorbed without leaving the skin oily.
  • Controls oil effectively, though not more than 4 hours in summers. A compact may be required for touch-up.
  • Did not break me out.
  • Convenient to use under make-up.
  • Pleasant fragrance.
  • Easy to carry.

Cons of MAC Oil Control Lotion:

  • I wish it controlled oil for longer when used alone or during summers.
  • I do not like how the opening of the bottle is exposed to air all the time.
  • Availability.
  • Price versus quantity.

Will I Buy MAC Oil Control Lotion Again?

Umm, not sure! It is good, but I may get bored of it by the time it gets over!

IMBB Rating:

Do I Recommend MAC Oil Control Lotion?

For very oily skin, the lotion is good for colder days or when summers are still bearable. During peak summers and humid monsoon, this may not work too well. But, those with combination skin can try it all round the year, I believe, to get that dewy skin we all want.

Have any of you tried this lotion? Do share your experience in the comments!

PS: For my oily skin, the everyday skin-care and base make-up routine that I follow to keep the skin problem and shine-free for long is:

Skin Care (Morning):

  • Vichy Normaderm face wash and toner.
  • MAC Oil Control Lotion (moisturiser)

Base Makeup:

Skin Care (Night):

Through all sorts of permutations and combinations, I have finally reached a stage where I know what products actually work very well for my skin. Thought I’d share with you all!

Thanks for patiently reading 🙂
