MAC Retro Matte Lipstick – Dangerous Review

MAC Retro Matte Lipstick – Dangerous Review

MAC retro matte lipstick dangerous

This year orange lips are back with a vengeance. On every red carpet, fashion show, celeb interviews, I’m seeing all kinds of orange-y hues, but then I have yellow undertones, so do most Indian women and sometimes orange lips can make the teeth look yellow too. Then I found a middle ground 😉 – a reddish orange that makes the face look all nice and bright and of course I had to go to MAC first, although NARS heat wave is on my radar too!

MAC Retro Matte, a new colorful lip collection, was inspired by how amazingly popular RiRi Woo became after they released it in this same formula.  Dangerous is described as an “orangey red matte.” It’s a medium dark shade with a lot of red undertones.

$16 + tax. Available at all MAC stores and online.

My Experience with MAC Retro Matte Lipstick – Dangerous:

RiRiWoo was such a delight to wear. To date, it remains my favorite red. Then, MAC decided to spin the formula and make a few more. When they were launched, it got sold out within a few days. Luckily, MAC decided to make them permanent.  These lipstick shades might not be all new, but they do have the new retro matte finish. A MAC MUA told me that it’s the only finish of MAC lipstick that is clay based, which is why it’s so matte. Initially, I had a tough time working around with this formula, but now I guess I kind of warmed up to this.

It does tug a bit on days when my lips are dry and flaky. Most days, I wear a lip balm underneath. Although the staying time reduces when I top it up with a gloss.   It comes in a standard black tube packaging and smells faintly of vanilla.  This is more matte than the usual matte line but looks like a velvety finish on the lips. I wipe the lips and then apply it from the middle to the corner.  It does tug a bit but not so much as to hurt the lips. I blend it with either my fingers or a lip blush. I also wear it as a stain and it lasts on me about 4-5 hours.

A single swipe gives a nice opaque color and layering it makes it denser. If I eat anything, it goes off but leaves a faint stain. This is a lovely shade which will brighten the face and make me look happy for some reason 😉  I am most definitely buying more similar shades.  I have heard that the lighter shades are a big hit with working ladies. Also, this formula will work great for formal do’s (in lighter shades though).

You can call it a distant cousin of MAC’s own Lady Danger and So Chaud. It will be a lovely substitute for a red lipstick.

So, summing up the pros and cons:

Pros of MAC Retro Matte Lipstick – Dangerous:

  • Looks great.
  • The shade range is pretty and permanent.
  • Staying power is better than average lipstick.
  • Decently priced for the formula.

Cons of MAC Retro Matte Lipstick – Dangerous:

  • It might feel like tugging for sensitive lips.
  • It is drying, especially if you already have dry lips.
  • Might highlight dry patches on the lips, it didn’t show mine though.

Verdict:

Gets 4/5 from me. Do check it out if you are thinking of making changes in your persona this summer 😉
