For those who prefer timeless glamour to all – out flash, matte reigns supreme, M.A.C introduces a twist on this classic texture with robustly saturated shades of Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour. Which shade you choose, all promise one thing: a splash of colour in a liquid- suede finish that is impossible to forget.
My Experience with MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lip Colour So Me:
The lip colour comes in a standard bullet MAC packaging. It is housed in a matte black cardboard box which has all the information such as ingredients, price, shade name, etc. The lipstick itself just has MAC brand name embossed on the black shimmery cap. The body of the lipstick is transparent, enabling one to see the shade and amount of product left. It has a tear drop shaped wand, which makes it convenient for lining the lips. The amount of product collected by the wand is more than sufficient for filling both the upper and lower lip. This range of liquid lip colour has 12 new shades, including this one, with a revamped formulation, meant to be part of the permanent collection of MAC.
“So Me” has been described as a grey plum color. This description is apt for the colour, as it is a dull greyish rose, mauve colour. It kind of reminds me of the singer, “Lorde” because she wears very dull but pretty lip colours. Another aspect about this shade (or probably all the shades) is that once it dries down, it turns slightly darker, so do not be dissuaded by this shade when you swatch it at the store, wait for it to dry down completely. For reference, this is a slightly lighter version of “Topped With Brandy,” from the same range.
On me, it slightly washes my skin out during the day, especially in white or natural light. If I want to wear this shade, I must do a full face of makeup, including foundation and eyeliner. At night, this shade looks so beautiful. It is not very bold, but it is extremely unique, so if you want a break from reds, plums and browns, you can check out this lipstick.
The texture of the lipstick is very soft and mousse-y. It is highly pigmented. The lip colour does not feel heavy or drying or the lips, as compared to other common matte liquid lipsticks. It does not feather or peel off. It stays in place as if freshly applied.
For application, I follow the instructions by outlining the upper lip and filling it in. Thereafter, I do the same for the lower lip. As my lips are thin, I prefer to outline it first with the tip. I also wipe off a bit of the excess product present on the wand before applying. A single coat is enough for getting an opaque application. Since my lips are not smooth, it does enhance fine lines. If you have smooth lips, this will glide on perfectly. I have not tried to layer it. It dries down in one to two minutes. It is not completely matte, but has a very slight velvety-“ness” to it, but from afar, it comes across as a matte finish.
Coming to the longevity, this liquid lipstick does last a long time. It does not fade away with beverages, but with oily food, the inner areas of the lips tend to lose colour. Overall, this was a good purchase for me. I am excited to try out more shades from this range.

Would I Repurchase MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lip Colour So Me?
This is a very unique and wearable colour for night time looks. It is definitely different than other bold shades from the same range. I would be repurchasing this. I would recommend this to all skin tones, except maybe dusky skin tones, as it washes even me out slightly without foundation and in natural or white light.
