MAC Stone Matte Lipstick Review

Hello lovely ladies,

It’s been ages since I wrote for IMBB. I’ve been struggling with some personal issues and blogging was far from my mind. And once you stop doing something, it takes a huge amount of effort to go back to it; and it has been the same for me.  Since it’s my first review after ages, it has to be a lipstick – and this one’s from MAC. Very rarely do you get to review a MAC lipstick because pretty much every shade is already reviewed. But not this one because this is a new release and has been added to the permanent line.

MAC Stone Matte Lipstick

My Experience with MAC Stone Matte Lipstick:

Color: The shade described by MAC as a “muted greyish taupe brown” is just that – greyish taupe. Or as I like to call it –“kiss of death.” 😛 That’s what the colour looks on your lips! HA ha ha! So why buy it? Well, it is extremely unique and I am intrigued by how it looks on its own and how it will work paired with a different coloured liner or gloss! I had been wanting to try MAC Stone and MAC Whirl lip pencils since ages, but didn’t because they were always sold out, pretty much across the globe. So when I heard that MAC was launching a new collection with these shades as lipsticks, I wanted to jump onto the wagon. I tried MAC Stone pencil and was totally amazed by the colour. Yes, I do agree, its not everyone’s cup of tea.

So, the collection hadn’t launched in India and I was on my way to Thailand and wanted to ensure I pick this by hook or by crook. I checked in MAC Duty free in India, and MAC retail in Thailand, but it wasn’t launched. Finally, found it in MAC duty-free Bangkok, but they had no testers. So, on a whim, I picked up both MAC Whirl and Stone lipsticks. And have been playing with them since the last two months or so, and loving them totally. Just to update, these are part of a new MAC matte collection – all the shades from which will get added to the permanent line. So, do go and have a look.

MAC Stone Matte Lipstick

Texture: The texture is the usual MAC Matte texture – a little on the thick side but glides smoothly. It did not feel too drying on the lips, was fairly comfortable for the first 4 hours or so. I would however suggest you to apply a lip balm to condition your lips once you remove this.

Pigmentation:  There is full colour pay-off in a single swipe. The colour is opaque and covers all lip pigmentation fully and effectively.

Lasting Power:  The product lasted about 5.5 – 6 hours. I do not use a liner with it. It sticks on but leaves no stain.

MAC Stone Matte Lipstick

To sum this up for you:

Pros of MAC Stone Matte Lipstick:

  • An interesting unique colour.
  • Excellent pigmentation – opaque in a single swipe.
  • Comfortable matte – not too drying.
  • The lipstick applies smoothly – no tug or pull!
  • No feathering or bleeding.
  • Convenient packaging, easy to apply and easy to carry – doesn’t take much space in the bag. Though I am not very happy with the cover – I don’t trust it to stay put.

Cons of MAC Stone Matte Lipstick:

  • Limited stocks – MAC in India at least gets very limited pieces and if the colour is fast running, it’s a pain to find it. I already have two more lipsticks from this collection on my radar, but one of them is already sold out.

IMBB Rating:
A definite4.8/5 product.

It is an extremely unique shade and as I have mentioned before, not everyone’s cup of tea. I am currently on the search for unique shades to add to my collection. So, I don’t seem to be buying corals and fuchsias any more. The MAC Matte collection has some amazing shades, do have a look. However, chances are that the colours would already have been sold out, so you can wait and bid your time.

As my usual readers would remember, I do not take pricing into the mix of pros and cons because everyone knows their budget. And I feel the product needs to be evaluated on its own merit – irrespective of the price.

    1. I understand that! Not only is it dark, the hint of grey might not appeal to all. If I had seen this a year back, even I would have walked right past it!

  1. Welcome back KK, you were dearly missed 🙂 Get well soon! KK, you should also try ombre lips with it, I had seen some yt videos, and it looked awesome! Give me some fuchsias and pinks though 🙂

  2. Interesting review KK.. when i saw the swatches, i though the shade would be listed under cons.. very surprised to see it in pros.. Unique is not just the shade, You too 😀 . Kudos to your liking 🙂

    1. Awwww…thanks Bhavani! To me the shade is extremely unique. Ive kind of getting tired of my fuchsia and oranges. And fairly recently, I’ve started trying my hand at full on eye makeup. So i miss the n*des and neutrals in my kitty to balance the look. So, Im drawn more towards them now. However, my next review is a full on Fuchsia. Hope you like that!

  3. Welcome back kk. Missed your presence and your articles. Hope everything is good in your life now.
Great review! Though the shade is not my cup of tea 🙂

  4. you know i picked up stone like 4 times and kept it back mostly because i thought i wont be able to pull it off but you are rocking it, K. It just looks so s*xy against your skintone!! I think i might have the heart to give it a go next time. Finally picked up whirl and heroine. Both of them …serous obsessions. hahah1

  5. Honestly, i don’t know what came over me. But the shade was so very unique. Strangely, after i picked it, my local MAC told me that they finally had one piece of Stone lipliner and if i wanted it. I was like – no way. I don’t think I’m going to wear this colour so often that i need a lip liner also in the same shade.

Whirl was a no-brainer. Its so effortless. And Heroine! Im glad you finally got it! That colour is a serious obsession. Im so glad its not LE. I just love love love the shade!

  6. Its so good to have you back on IMBB Kulpreet.. !! This is such a unique shade.. even though I love experimenting with new colors I dont think I could ever pull this color off.. A lot of brands are coming with such greyish toned lip colors.. reminds me of Cashmere by Lime crime !!
Looking forward to reading more reviews from u

    1. Hey! Just saw this comment when i came to pen down the mini review. Its good to be back Neha – good to be writing again! Yes, the grey tones are in. Im intrigued at how the brands across tiers are opening up to experimenting with shades!
