Recently while browsing through Sephora, I came across this seemingly regular-looking lip product which I didn’t even give a second thought, but looking closely, I saw it was something really unique. I was so intrigued, that in an instant, I picked up all 4 shades currently offered in this range. This review will be on Make Up For Ever Pro Sculpting Lip Pen in the shade “11 Rust.”
A two-in-one lip color that adds shape and volume to the lips.
What it does: The Pro Sculpting Lip is a dual-ended tool that naturally creates the illusion of a fuller-looking pout using light. The opaque, semi-matte lip color features an ultra-comfortable, creamy texture that’s infused with oil to prevent moisture loss. Available in four color combinations, the other end includes an iridescent powder-to-cream highlighter that volumizes and shapes your lips. Apply the highlighter before or after the lip color for your desired level of intensity.
What else you need to know: “The most important thing about sculpting is light. A touch of light is the key element when contouring & sculpting.”—Dany Sanz, Make Up For Ever Founder and Creative Director.
My Experience with Make Up For Ever #11 Rust Pro Sculpting Lip 2-in-1 Lip Sculpting Pen:
Packaging: This is a 2-sided lip product but what makes it so incredibly special is that one side has a creamy matte lipstick and the other side is a sponge tip powder highlight. We all know the trick of dabbing a bit of highlight in the center of your lip to make them look fuller and pouty – this is the same concept, but in a much more user-friendly format of having both products in one. The tube is sleek, showcasing the color family of the lipstick on the outside. I do find the small rounded cut of the lipstick to give me precise application on the corners and even the cupid’s bow. The other side which has the sponge tip highlighter has the product built in the cap so that the tip is coated every time you screw the cap back on, how innovative is that! Just be sure to gently wipe the residue lipstick off the sponge tip after use, so that it doesn’t get clogged up.
Texture: The lipstick side is a creamy matte formula. This is one of the smoothest, most comfortable, semi-matte lipsticks that I have used till date. It just glides on without tug on skin and feels like velvet on the lips. It is very hydrating and moisturizing, yet gives this petal soft matte look to the lips.
The highlight on the other end is of powder-to-cream texture. Once you dab it on the lipstick, it adheres to it quite easily and with a couple of dabs, blends right into the cream without leaving any chalky or powdery feel on the lips. I don’t feel any grittiness of the powder even as I rub my lips together and the highlight stays where it is applied without muddling together. I apply this right in the center of my upper and lower lips and purse them together a couple of times and its gives dimension to my lips and makes then look fuller.
You can either apply the highlight just in the center on all over the lip. You can apply it lightly or heavily and really alter the color of the lipstick underneath. Each combination of lipstick and highlight is different hence there are so many possibilities.
Shade: The shade “11 Rust” is a reddish pink shade, a lovely MLBB everyday shade. The highlight powder on the other end is a pearly white shade. Both the lipstick shade and the highlight complement each other. When the highlighter is topped over, it slightly lightens the color of the lipstick giving you a gorgeous ombre effect on the lips.
This particular shade combo is the most muted of the bunch. There is also some super unique combo, like the shade #50 which is a red lipstick which turns an iridescent purple when topped with the highlight, and I will review that for you soon.
Feel and Staying Power: These lipsticks are so comfortable, to the point that I even forget that I am wearing them. It does not accentuate fine lines or dry patches on my lips. It feels moderately hydrating even when topped with the powder highlight .The sheen from the highlight is very subtle and there are no visible glitter chunks. The staying power is quite good. It stays for 5-6 hours with snacking and drinking, which is a decent wear time. It feels quite comfortable throughout the wear and doesn’t have me reaching for the lip balm at all. I do need reapplication after a full meal. There is slight amount of transferring onto cups and glasses which I am quite okay with. Overall, I absolutely love this product. Even if you weren’t into using the highlight part of this product, the lipstick itself makes this product worth getting, so two thumbs up for this product from me!
