My Makeup Brushes Collection As A Beginner

My Makeup Brushes Collection As A Beginner

My fascination for makeup/cosmetics started around December last year. One basic thing I learnt about makeup initially was the role of good makeup brushes. As a beginner, I wanted to practice first with low priced/decent quality brushes before laying my hands on and investing in brushes from MAC or Sigma. Sharing with you here all the brushes I own and how well they perform.

My Makeup Brushes Collection as a beginner

Bh Cosmetic Brushes:

I did a complete/detailed post about these 3 brushes, which you can check here.

Coastal Scents Brushes:

These where the first few brushes I bought around March 2011. I wanted to try basic makeup brushes and Sireesha guided/helped me with finalising my order then.

Coastal Scent Brushes

Coastal Scents Synthetic Angle Blush and Define brush, Price- $ 6.95.

Product Claims:

Sculpting facial features has never been easier with our Synthetic Angle Blush and Define. The perfectly angled synthetic bristles allow you to apply cream or powder blush or bronzer effortlessly over the cheekbone and forehead areas.
I use this brush often for my blush application and does a good job. The Bristles are packed in angular shape which make blush & bronzer application precise.

I wash this brush every 2 weeks and it does not shed a lot.

Coastal Scents Bionic Flat Top Buffer Brush, Price- $13.95:

Product Claims: Our Bionic Flat Top Buffer is perfect for buffing in foundation, blending in powders, and applying bronzer. The durable, dense bristles offer great control and a full coverage application.

This Brush is often compared to the Sigma Flat top kabuki Brush F80, but since I have both of them, so I can tell you that the bristles in this are not as tightly packed as the one in Sigma. However, I got this before my Sigma Brush and really liked how well this works on blending foundations, cream blushes. Another good one from Coastal scents.

Coastal Scents Synthetic Deluxe Crease Brush, Price – $2.79:

Product Claims:  Shading and contouring eyes has never been easier with our Synthetic Deluxe Crease Brush. The soft, synthetic, tapered bristles allow you to apply powder or cream shadows for added depth and dimension.

This brush allows easy application of eye shadows and I even use it for blending. This can be a good crease brush if you have large eyelids.

crease brush

Coastal Scents Chisel Fluff/Pointed Crease Duet Brush, Price- $3.95:

Product Claims:  This two-in-one brush allows you to apply full color effortlessly with the Chisel Fluff end and add depth and dimension to your crease with the Pointed Crease end. It’s a great brush for travel and on the go touch ups.

I got this because I was getting two brushes in 1 😀 The brush however is just average. Being dual-ended, you need to store it horizontally.

dual-ended brush

Coastal Scents C 159 Liner /Chisel Fluff Brush, Price- $3.99

Product Claims:  Our two-in-one Shadow/Liner Brush is ideal for creating defined, chiseled looks. The shadow side offers soft, round bristles to blend and shade shadows while the liner side offers angled, taklon bristles to perfectly line eyes with powder, liquid, or gel-based products.

I wanted a brush with which I could apply my gel liner, so I ended up buying this. I like this brush a lot. Both the sides do their respective jobs well and deliver good results.

chisel puff brush

Coastal Scents Angle Brow Define, price- $1.79:

Product Claims:  The Angle Brow Define is designed to create perfectly defined brows by lining and shaping with ease. The firm bristles provide great control to create a flawless look. The brush can also double as a liner brush.
I have sparse eye brows, so bought this one to fill my eye brows. This is quite useless though. I use it rarely , just to apply gel liners on my waterline.

brow definer brush

Now, this was a cute, girly, pink brush set I got a long time back from a New U store just on its face value 😀 . I guess the whole set costed me around Rs.200. The brushes are not something I use often, but these do an okay-ish job (sometimes) 😀

Pink Brushes

Oriflame Brushes:

Oriflame brushes

Lip brush- Price- Rs.129:

Dual purpose extendable brush, improving accuracy in application of lipstick or concealer for a truly professional finish. Aluminium, Wood, Nylon. 10.5cm (closed).

This is a great lip brush and I use it almost everyday for lipstick application. I can’t imagine using my Bh cosmetics 66 lip colour palette without this.

Blush Brush; Price- Rs.249:

This was launched around last month. I liked this brush initially, for blush application, but since the day I have washed it, has become rough, scratchy and sheds bristles.

Amuse Long Fan Brush Price- $2.50:

Product claims- Amuse Fan Brush. Must have for your makeup brush set.

I got this 2 weeks back from Cherry Culture.  I wanted to use a fan brush, so thought of starting with a low-priced one. This is quite a crappy brush with poor quality bristles that shed a lot.

Sigma Brushes:

Sigma Flat Top Synthetic Kabuki – F80 Price- $16

Product Claims:  This exclusive flat top synthetic kabuki was designed to deliver a flawless makeup application. The Sigma Makeup F80 is a buffer brush that can be used to blend powder or liquid products. The short and dense bristles make it easy to buff your liquid foundation. The long handle adds comfort to your makeup application. The synthetic fibers are ideal to be used with liquid products and can be easily cleaned. Made of Synthetic Sigmax HD filament.

Sigma Brushes

Now, this is the STAR and most cherished one in my brushes collection. I use it almost every single day and just love the way it works in blending foundations. I highly recommend this one.

Sigma Blending – E25 brush , Price- $9:

Product Claims:  Oval-shaped brush with gently chiseled sides. Blends and softens the look of powder or cream shadows. Ideal to apply eye shadow primer, base eye shadow colors, and blend harsh lines.

The Brush is often compared to MAC 217. I can’t comment much on that as I don’t own the MAC one as yet. Anyway, the brush does a very good job at applying and blending eye shadows.

sigma kabuki

With my experience with these brushes I can sum up that:

• Sigma, by far makes awesome makeup brushes and I am definitely getting more of these.
• The brushes from Coastal Scents are pretty decent too and fairly priced. Great value-for-money brushes, very good quality.
• BH cosmetics brushes are just average, avoidable.
• Oriflame brushes are just okay, but at the price they work well.
• Amuse Brushes are an absolute no.

Hope this post helps makeup enthusiasts, beginners like me to zero in on the brushes they should buy and invest in. Also, I haven’t tried any brushes from Colorbar as yet, so I would definitely get them soon.

  8. Hey,
Great collection Nupur 😉 How do you store those brushes? I have a small collection(which is geting biger now) have kept them in a box which is growing smaller now..

  9. I’m quite particular about make-up brushes. I believe that the key to great make-up is fine brushes. I’ve been using the Oriflame brushes and as you mentioned these are amazing to us and blending is so easy with them.
