Makeup Geek Morocco Eyeshadow Review

I am still on my eyeshadow review kick. After reviewing the exhaustive MAC X 15 Warm Neutrals palette, I didn’t think I would have the energy to write another review today, but here goes 😛 This review is on one of the much-raved Make Up Geek eyeshadow and the shade that I would be reviewing today is called “Morocco.”

The pan size is the same exact size as that of a MAC eyeshadow refill. I am inclined to believe that the reason for MAC dropping down the price to $6 may have had something to do with the quality, price, colour range and all the hype associated with these MUG ones, but that is just my opinion.

My Experience with Makeup Geek Morocco Eyeshadow:

Packaging:  MUG does not do individual compacts for eyeshadows. There is only these refill pans which come enclosed in a cardboard outer packaging. The cardboard packaging works well to cushion the product and I did not have an instance of these shattering in transit. My only concern with these shadows is that the pans do not have magnets – like PAC refill pans do. So, they do need either a magnetic palette like a Z palette to place them in or you need to do a bit of a DIY project with some magnet sheet.

Shade:  This is not a shade that I would have picked 6 months ago if I was making a palette on my own. Rich burnt orange on my lids? I don’t think so! However, ever since Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette came into my life, I have been gravitating towards just such shades. This shade is a slightly red-toned burnt orange – reminiscent of Realgar from the ABH – Modern Renaissance palette and something between MAC Rule and Red Brick. It’s not quite orange, but it isn’t a full-on red either.

The shade looks beautiful on the lid and it’s perfect to create a sunset or autumn EOTD. It can work equally well in the crease for a more modern take. Applied with more subtlety – you could use it for transition.

Texture: The texture of this one is soft, smooth, creamy matte, quite lovely and easy to work with. It was easy to build up or blend out. It wasn’t powdery. I may be a minority here but I do feel that the MUG shadows work very well with other MUG shades but they do not blend as well with other shadows like MAC. I noticed this subtlety only because my self-made palette had a number of MUG and MAC shades in it.

Pigmentation:  Pigmentation for the shadow is fabulous. It is nicely pigmented and the shade in the pan is what you get on your lid. You don’t need elbow grease for the shade to show up true to pan.

Staying Power:  I have said this in each of my eyeshadow reviews – I apply my eyeshadows over a primer because my eyelids are way too oily. Without a primer, anything and everything turns to mush with a couple of hours. With the primer, the shade stays put the whole day – almost 8-9 hours of wear time.

Compared to Other shadows in that price range: I can compare them to 3 other brands predominantly – Viseart /MAC/ABH. For Mattes/Satins, I would place them in this order:
1. Viseart
2. ABH (based solely on the Modern Renaissance palette) – excellent again; however, tends to kick up powder
3. MAC.
4. MUG – even though these are good quality at a great price – they aren’t really as good as the “good MAC shadows.” I specify “good MAC shadows” because MAC can be all over the place. The shades do well, they do, really well. The shades which are a miss…i guess they form a bulk of the LE component!! 😉 Jokes apart, I do like these shadows but when it comes to blending, they aren’t comparable to the above three. The shadows from the above three brands blend so well that the whole process is entirely effor-less. It is not the case with this one. There is a slight area of improvement. . Please note that this is just my opinion, based on my preference. Your opinion may differ and you are entitled to it!

Pros of Makeup Geek Morocco Eyeshadow:

• Gorgeous and extremely trendy shade.
• Matte finish, which is smooth and creamy.
• Does not feel dry or get patchy.
• Excellent pigmentation.
• Zero fallout, except for two shades.
• Long wearing.
• No creasing.
• Does not transfer.
• Builds up and blends out easily.
• Decent packaging – for shipping.
• Talc and paraben free.
• Individual pans allow you to customise what shades you want in your palette.
• Not tested on animals.

Cons of Makeup Geek Morocco Eyeshadow:

1. You do need a palette to put this in – and that too a magnetic one. So additional expense.

This one is an absolutely stunning shade. This time when I traveled, I decided to take this with me instead of ABH- MR palette. And honestly, I didn’t miss ABH-MR that much though I did miss the ease of blendability. This shade is extremely trendy right now. If you feel uncomfortable getting a pre-made palette but want to experiment with such non-neutral shades, Morocco is definitely a good option – great quality at a decent price. On its own, this is excellent. But since they are compared to MAC shadows so often, I will add that this one did not seem as easily blendable as a MAC shadow. Definitely recommend!
