Makeup Tutorial for Mature Women

This post is an entry for the 500 Posts Celebration giveaway I dedicate this post to my mother because she chose to dedicate her life to me. Also, to Rati, in whom I found a great human being. It’s been a long time since I wrote for Rati, so when she said that writing a post for her blog would get me 6 points for her international give away, I knew that the time was ripe! I didn’t want to do any run of the mill stuff because even though I’m being selfish by writing this, I want to present something that people will enjoy. I thought endlessly about the perfect theme for my post and suddenly, BAM! I got this idea. Well people, today I’m going to show you how mature women can also look sexy and glamorous without looking like wannabes. Or like they hit their head against a wall before applying their make up. Who could be a better candidate than my own MOTHER! I sat her down and did her full face make up, applying products that she otherwise doesn’t use. Coincidentally, she had to go for a party later on so she got to show off her beautiful face! A bit about my mother- My mother is in her late forties. Her skin has never given her any problem so she doesn’t fuss much over it. The first cosmetic she used was a lipstick and that continues to be a favourite with her. When she’s out, her lips are never bare. Since mummy has oily skin, the powder compact is her best friend. She also uses an eyebrow pencil. On special days like kitty parties, weddings, get-togethers etc., she likes to experiment with coloured eyeliners. My mother does not shy away from colour at all and we both end up sharing our bangles, earrings and bright dupattas. πŸ™‚ So let’s get started! This is not a neutral look but something fun and flirty! πŸ˜›

products used-1 Step 1 (Foundation and Powder) – My mother has large pores and fine brown spots all over her face. However, they lighten considerably even with a very sheer layer of foundation or powder. I poured foundation (we’re the same shade) at the back of my hand and sprayed some facial mist on it. I also moistened mummy’s face and my foundation brush using the same spray. This way, the application becomes more sheer and smooth. I then applied the foundation on her face and neck, concentrating more on the cheek area, where her fine brown spots are maximum. Before the foundation dried off her face, I used a clean and dense powder puff in a pressing motion to remove any streaks. I sealed the deal with a slight dusting of loose powder using a baby kabuki. Makeup for Mature skin Products used –

  • MAC Select SPF 15 Foundation in NC 30
  • Dabur Gulabari Facial Mist
  • Colorbar Foundation Brush
  • EcoTools Baby Kabuki
  • Lakme Rose Powder in Soft Pink
  • Old but Clean Powder Puff from Lakme’s Radiance Complexion Compact

Step 2 (Eyeshadow Base) – I used an eyeshadow base all over mummy’s lid and crease area. I then told her to use her index finger to blend it a bit. She happily obliged! πŸ˜› Makeup for Mature skin Product used –

  • MAC Shadestick in Shimmersand

Step 3 (Pencil Liner) – I lined mummy’s eyes with a brown eye pencil. Browns are softer than blacks and don’t look very stark, especially good for mature women. Even though the liner got covered with eyeshadow in the next step, I still found it to be very essential and important. Eyeshadows have a tendency to fade off from the lashline, despite using an eyeshadow base. Using a liner BEFORE helps the eyeshadow stick better. Makeup for Mature skin Product used –

  • Colorbar I-Define Eye Pencil in Truffle

Step 4 (Eyeshadow) – Using a fluffy and rounded eyeshadow brush, I applied a deep violet shade all over mummy’s lid. Although this colour has lots of shimmer, it did not accentuate the loose skin and fine lines on mummy’s lids. I lightly swirled the brush at the back of my hand and then applied the colour on her lids. This reduces fallout. Makeup for Mature skin Products used –

  • Violet shade from Lakme Peacock Eye Color Quartet (Top Right)
  • EcoTools Eye Shading Brush

Step 5 (Highlight and Bright Tail!) I used a large, flat eyeshadow brush to apply a deep golden shade as highlight all over mummy’s brow bones. Since she has a pronounced crease, I did not use anything on it. I also took a bright blue-green pencil liner and made two little flicks on the outer corners of mummy’s lids. This was her idea! πŸ˜‰ Her way to brighten up her face without looking like a clown! Makeup for Mature skin Products used –

  • Unbranded Eyeshadow Brush
  • Golden shade from Lakme Peacock Eye Color Quartet (Top Left)
  • Lakme Glide On Eye Color in Aqua Green

Step 6 (Black Liner, Mascara and Brows) I finely lined mummy’s eyes using a black liquid liner and smudged it a bit using a precise, narrow brush. I then applied mascara to her lashes. Since we ran out of the eyebrow pencil that mummy uses, I used mascara to lightly fill in her brows and tame them. They’re quite wild, as you can see! They have a mind of their own. πŸ˜€ Makeup for Mature skin Products used –

  • Chambor’s Eye Definer Eyeliner in Black
  • Unbranded Narrow Brush
  • Maybelline Colossal Waterproof Mascara

Step 7 (Lipstick and Blush) Though my mother does not have dry lips, I applied balm on them nonetheless. I did not wait for the balm to settle in and neither did I blot it out with tissue. I straight away went ahead and applied a reddish brown lipstick because I wanted a sheer and glossy finish which gives a luscious and youthful look. I then used a soft and almost nude lipliner to line mummy’s lips to define their shape. Makeup for Mature skin Final step was to apply blush. As you can see, mummy has amazing cheekbones. She does not need any contouring, but just a bit of colour to lift her pretty face. As we age, the colour actually drains off from our skin and it becomes more pasty. Blush is one product that can actually work wonders, if applied correctly! Using a fluffy blush brush, I applied a shimmery apricot shade very lightly over mummy’s cheekbones. NOT on the apples of her cheeks, that looks scary! πŸ˜› final look- makeup for matured women Products used –

  • Nivea Lip Balm in Strawberry
  • Maxfactor Lipstick in Terra
  • Vega Lip Brush
  • Bourjois Lipliner in I don’t know what shade. Can’t make out the name. If it’s written in French, not my fault!
  • Maybelline Expert Wear Blush in Apricot Flush (New Formula, old one sucks!)

DONE! See how pretty my mother looks! :* final look- makeup for matured women (The photo that shows the products used does not include the Colorbar Foundation Brush) My mother was very happy with the final result. My father liked it too, because if he didn’t, he would have made some smart comments! πŸ˜› Mummy went ahead for her party sporting this look even though it was afternoon. So you see, she isn’t scared to have some colour on her face! πŸ˜‰ We both had a lot of fun playing make up and clicking photos. She kept giving me tips along the way and it was her idea to use the Aqua Green liner on the corners of her lids. πŸ˜€ You can see how she inaugurated FOUR of my brand new products that I purchased with Rati! This was indeed her day! πŸ™‚ I hope my mother inspires women across all age groups. They can look at her and realize that being forty, fifty or even sixty and beyond does not mean that make up is taboo. Colour is life and shimmer isn’t always bad! And young girls out there have something to learn too! There’s no point fearing the natural process of growing older! Each age has it’s own wonderful moments. There are so many products that my mother can use and I can’t! I would look plain weird. Live life happily, enjoy each birthday as it comes and have a blast! Life’s a party! A big thank you to Aunty for being our model.- Rati πŸ™‚

    1. thanks palak! my main aim with this post was to inspire women. none of my mother’s friends apply lipstick, can you believe it? they reserve it only for weddings and some don’t even do that! after we shifted to delhi, my mother would feel very awkward. she would think twice before applying her lipstick. but now she doesn’t bother much about what others will say.

  5. aww rati this post means a lot to me! my mother asked me to show her the comments and people’s reactions! i hope this post inspires! i conveyed your regards to her. please don’t say thanks. she is more than happy to contribute for this blog!

  6. You know, my mom is also in her 40s and she loves to play with makeup and uses all kinds of colours. Infact she was the one who introduced me to colorbar. πŸ™‚ I also share my accessories, bangles and colorful dupattas with her. Aunty really reminded me of my mom.

And no I don’t believe that any kind of colours should be restricted to any age groups. When my daadaji was alive, my daadi used to wear all kinds of bright colour. Even after my grandfather passed away we requested her not to wear whites or creams. πŸ™‚

I loved the tutorial and they way you played with purples and reds.

You have got your beautiful lips from aunty. I would love to meet her soon. :-* :-*

    1. awww!!! even i tell my nani to use all kinds of colours. she still wears her sleeveless blouses! in fact, when she was here a couple of weeks ago, i got her a nice bright lipstick and told her to apply it right there in the middle of the mall! (sounds familiar? :D)
and yes you must meet mummy! we’ll work that out some day. my lips say thank you! :-*

  7. Hi Rima, your mom looks beautiful, and u’ve done her makeup so well, I enjoyed your tutorial throughly.. makes me want to exeriment with colours too :-))

  8. Hey Rima….aunty is so beautiful….and that makeup that you have done on her makes her so radiant without being over-the-top…..and in the first pic….your mom is looking so cute and expectant about getting her make up done. My mom is in her 40s too and I do not think 40s are the time to tone down on anything…..its the best time in a woman’s life, when her children are grown up, and she has the freedom to follow what she likes……Mwaah to your mom…..by the way a secret…..your mom looks a lot like my mom…except the nose………and whenver I try anything on her..she sits with the same expression that your mom has in the first pic…. πŸ™‚ :-))

    1. jomol, most of the products i used on her face contained high dosage of shimmer. right from the shadestick to her pencil liner, eyeshadow and blush. it’s a common misconception that with age you can’t use shimmer or glitter but the trick is to apply it at the right places and not go over the top with it. i’m so happy you think i was able to achieve exactly that. mummy is really touched that she resembles everyone’s mother over here! she’s quite a simple, youthful and calm person. and i totally agree about forties being one of the best times in a woman’s life. no little children to run after!

  9. I usually have nothing to say on these makeup posts but I am really touched by this one. And very courageous and adventurous on your mom’s part. She must be having a lot of fun with all the makeup and photo shoot. πŸ™‚

I think this would be one of the gems at IMBB. A rare post. πŸ™‚

  10. mummy to sanjeev – “how nice! i feel really great that all these youngsters are talking about me! as it is i use enough cosmetics. lipstick, eyeliner, talcum, perfume..”
ok sanjeev i think i should leave it at that because she’s narrating all the items she uses. πŸ˜›
and i’m soo touched to hear all this! i’m always more than happy to write for imbb. :beauty:

    1. aww your mother would apply makeup for you? that’s so sweet! as a kid my mother would apply the lightest shade of pink lipstick on my lips when i went for birthday parties or weddings. had totally forgotten about it but reading this suddenly lit a flashbulb in my head. :-*

  18. OMG your mom’s so pretty without makeup as well !!
this is such a nice post.wish i could try on my mom.The only makeup items she uses is a kajal, foundation powder & lipstick.

  19. wow! thats so gorgeous! your mom’s reallly sooo very pretty at this age
(with and without makeup too) u jus inspired to xperiemnt wid my mom!

  20. hey rima..just checked ur post….i cud make out it ws by u, ur mom n u resemble a lot…. found ur post reallly sweet…
i got a bit emotional too.. i wish i cud do make up on my mom πŸ™

  21. Hi, Rima. Your tutorial really helped. I would be of your mother’s age, 43 to be exact but love make – up & color. The Aqua Liner was a good idea too. But i am afraid to use dark lipsticks during the day as i am darker complexioned than your Mom. Using the Gulabari Mist was also helpful. I also stay back from using Foundation during the day, do with a Compact & Bronzer instead of a blusher.
