Makeup Tips For Hooded Eyes

Makeup Tips For Hooded Eyes

Hey everyone! I LOVE doing eye makeup! No, it does not mean that I am good at it. It actually means that I try and learn a lot! ☺ I read tutorials, watch videos and browse through our own IMBB to get tips on eye makeup. Everyone would agree with me if I say, if you have lovely features, your makeup process gets easier. However, not all of us are blessed with perfect and flawless features and hence, we take the help of makeup. Eyes are the most expressive part of your face. If you get your eye makeup right, your face instantly gets a makeover.

Hooded eyes are a type of eye-feature that some people are born with. However, these can be acquired with age too. Celebrities like Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and Olivia Wilde have hooded eyes, but they use it to their advantage. I have hooded eyes and I used to hate this feature a lot, because no matter how much I tried, my eyes never looked nice and open. Then I started researching about disguising this feature of mine and I was surprised to see that hooded eyes are not that bad! If you use the right kind of hues and apply makeup in a certain way, hooded eyes will instantly transform into sexy eyes! Here are some tips on how to get those gorgeous eyes-

1. Apply different tones of eye shadow across your lid instead of just one:

Hooded Eye Taylor

Use a light colored eye shadow or a highlighter, preferably with a little shimmer, near your upper lash line and inner corner of the eye (A).Then use a slightly darker shade to cover your lid till the brow bone. Blend it very well to avoid creases (B). Now use an even darker shade on the crease (you have to pinpoint the crease with your fingertips) and then blend it well so that it covers the outer half of you lid(C). Use the same dark eye shadow to line your lower lash line with a little smudge. If you are using eyeliner, line the upper lash line alone, with a very thin streak. Always blend your eye shadows till the outer corners and end it with an angle. If you blend it till your cheekbones, your eyes will look droopy. Curl your lashes and apply a generous amount of mascara. And you are ready! 🙂 You’ll be able to see the transformation yourself!

2. Apply eyeliner carefully:

Eyeline Taylor

If you like to create looks using eyeliners alone, make sure that you line the upper lash line too. Most of us just use kohl or liner on the lower lash line or waterline and leave it. That actually pulls the eyes down and gives the impression of droopiness. We don’t want that, do we? When apply liners, always apply more on the upper lash line than the lower one. If you want to line the upper lash line alone, that is fine too. Make sure that the color you choose for lining the lower lash line is lighter than the upper one. For e.g.:-if you choose a black liner for the upper lid, use a brown, bronze or smoky grey for the lower lash line. You can also apply an eye shadow on your lower lash line with an eyeliner brush. When you go for the winged look, make sure the end is a little more extended than it usually is. Pay attention to the outer corners of the eye. A thick, dark extended winged eyeliner look will do wonders for hooded eyes. Alternatively, you can play around with metallic eyeliners to camouflage the droopiness.

3. Mascara is the key:

mascara blake
Long, dense and curly lashes open up your eyes to a very great extent. Use eyelash curlers and mascara to get that bright-eyed look. Here’s a little trick to get more out of your ordinary mascara. If you want thickness, place the mascara brush horizontally at the base of the eyelashes and pull it upwards with a to and fro motion. This way, the mascara particles will get attached in-between your lashes and will make them appear thicker. For longer lashes- Hold the mascara brush vertically with the tip touching the base of the lash and pull it upwards. Repeat for each eyelash. This way the mascara gets attached to the tip of your eyelash and will make it longer.

4. Brow your way to perfection:

brow halle
Yes! Brows have an important role to play here. Use your eyebrow pencils/brushes to perfectly sculpt that brow angle, so that it looks arched. You can highlight the area just under the brows to ‘lift’ them. Concealers work great for this purpose, since they mimic your skin tone and do not have shimmer.

5. Have fun!

That’s right, You don’t have to strictly follow the rules of eye makeup to make those eyes pop! You can play around with matte, shimmery eye shadows and eyeliners and create a look yourself. Concentrate on one feature if you don’t have much time to get ready. As mentioned above, you can use mascara to instantly open up those peepers, or you can go for the classic winged eyeliner look. The important thing is to be confident about your looks and always use the oldest and the most effective face brightening technique- Smile! ☺

I hope the above points were helpful! I use these tricks almost every day while going out. Although I I haven’t perfected them myself, I hope to learn more such tricks to get gorgeous eyes and maybe get the confidence to do an OOTD post on IMBB ☺

  6. I have such heavy hooded eyes. 😛 I took a while to figure out what works the best for me. 2 cents from my side :

    1. You dont have to highlight your browbone always. The idea is to contour the heaviness of the browbone than highlighting it.

    2. After you are done with your eye makeup, open your eyes and use a soft matte brown eyeshadow above the crease , that would sort of contour your eyes. If you ‘stare’ 😛 at any of the pics above, you’d see a soft wash of brown color slightly below the browbone..that’s basically done to cut the wide area we have from crease to the browbone. 😀

Excellent article shruti. Totally agree with all your points. :))

    1. Floored by your comment Rati! Thank you 🙂
Your points are so right. Many people dont know how to correctly determine their crease area, which is a very significant factor in eyeshadow application. It makes all the difference in the world! 🙂
