6 Steps to Manicure and Pedicure with Easily Available Ingredients

I had a dinner party to attend to and we are shifting our house and things are almost packed! Considering the harsh winter, just a hand cream was not enough to moisturize my hands and legs and I really needed to take care, but unfortunately, other than daily care products, I had packed up everything, so I decided to do a DIY with ingredients that are available in the kitchen and I was so impressed with the results that I decided to write an article so that you can try it too! So, read on to know how.

1. Cleanse:

Fill in warm water in a small tub. Add shampoo/body wash, add salt and bubble it up. Remove your nail polish with a remover. Now, add a slice of lemon for instant freshness. If you do not want to add lemon slices in the water, you can alternatively add 2 tbspof mouth wash. Soak your hands and legs not more than 5 minutes in this water. Dry your hand and file your nails. As the nails are soft, you can file your nails easily now. I have liked this process over dry filing.

2. Cuticle Removal:

Now, you can use a conditioner and apply it to the cuticles and wait for 2-3 minutes. The conditioner softens the cuticles, works just like a cuticle remover cream. Now, with gentle motions, push back the cuticles. Remember always to keep the cuticles moist when doing this process. You can add drops of conditioner if needed. If needed, you can go ahead with removing the cuticle, but I do not recommend this as this process can do more harms to your nails than good. Now, soak again in the warm water for 3-4 minutes and wipe dry.

3. Scrub:

To remove the dead skin from your hands and legs, it is necessary that you need to scrub! You can also use scrub stone, but I just used a scrub and nothing else. I always use sugar for homemade scrubs and below are the few scrubs you can make:

1. Honey and Sugar: This is one of the best options and also easy.
2. Lemon, Olive Oil and Sugar Scrub: Mix 1 Tbsp of Olive Oil and Sugar. Add ½ tsp of freshly squeezed lemon. This scrub is very effective for balancing the skin tone and also using this scrub every week in your routine can even out your skin tone and also reduces tan and discolorations.


Apply the scrub and massage in light circular motions. Do not put a lot of pressure. Concentrate between the fingers and have gentle strokes. Massage for around 5 minutes. This way you are also hydrating and nourishing your hands and legs while you are scrapping out the dry dead skin. You do not have to wash your hands now but use a tissue paper and remove the sugar particles.

4. Nourish:

This is the part where we take care of our cuticles and hands/legs.
Cuticle Care Cream: I have created my own cuticle cream and below are the 2 easy ones. The second one was suggested by the lady at the salon I go to for my manicure:
1. Coco Aloe Cream: Mix equal parts of organic coconut oil and aloe vera. Add essential oil if needed.
2. Petroleum lemon olive cream: Take 1 part of petroleum jelly and half a part of olive oil and 1/4th part of lemon juice and mix together.

I use the Coco Aloe Cream. The coconut oil moisturizes and heals any injuries also. Aloe vera too moisturizes the cuticles. Apply the oil a little generously around your nail and also on the back of the nail. Just massage nails for 2-3 seconds each. This way you give the oils penetrate deeper.

Take a mixture of tomato juice, potato juice and lemon juice and massage the mixed juice onto the hands and legs. This will remove tan and add brightness and glow to your hands. You can massage for around 5-7 minutes and let it sit for another 3 minutes. So this process with take around 10 minutes.

5. Mask:

If you want to lock up all the goodness, you need to follow up with a mask. If you have tan, then you can use an ubtan pack, but I usually keep it simple with a mask made of coffee powder, turmeric and castor oil.

Castor oil is very good for nourishment and hydration. Turmeric cures and coffee powder adds a shine to hands. I slather the mixture and leave it for around 10 minutes. Once your pack has dried, wash if off with plain lukewarm water.

6. Soak and Relax:

We know the benefits of milk. It softens and nourishes your skin and we all know that Cleopatra indulged in milk soaks for keeping her skin young, so we will follow a similar procedure for our hands and legs too. I take lukewarm water up and the level needed for you to immerse your hands and add around 3 tbsp. of milk and soak hands and then your legs later till the water turns cold. This takes around 7-10 minutes, then wipe off hands with a towel.

If you follow the procedure above, you can achieve beautiful hands quickly. You need to have patience to follow all these steps. It took me around 45 minutes for both hands and legs but the end results were so nice and my hands were so soft like a feather, so try it out and let me know how it worked for you.
