My Experience with Marc Jacobs #Instamarc Light Filtering Contour Powder:

Packaging:  This product comes in a sleek, slim and practical compact case with a huge mirror inside which is good to see your entire face in easily. This compact is as big as my whole hand (fingers included) hence I wouldn’t really consider this very travel friendly, but if you do take it with you on travel, the big mirror would be a big bonus to have. The compact closes securely and the product inside is divided into two equal semi-circle sections. You get a lot of product hence it does sort of justify the price tag.

Texture:  These powders are sooooo buttery smooth and creamy without any emollient nature of a cream. These are the most wonderful feeling powders I have used till date. You really have to touch it to be blown away by the amazing silkiness of the powder. Since it’s still a powder product, it does kick up the slightest amount of powder when you dip your brush in.  These powders are super easy to blend into the skin and do not apply streaky or patchy. They look incredibly natural and become one with the skin. It doesn’t look like you have a powder sitting on top of your skin.

Shades:  This product comes in 3 different variations which is Mirage Filter 40 (is very yellow toned hence best suited for light-medium skin tones with similar undertone), Dream Filter 20 (has a strong pink undertone and best suited for light – medium skin tones with a similar undertone) and Hi Fi Filter 60 (best suited for medium to deeper skin tones).

I have the shade “Dream Filter 20” in which both the bronzer and highlight have a strong pink undertone and both shades are cool toned. I do think it complements the natural pink undertone in my skin very well and looks very natural. For reference, I have light-medium skin tone (MAC NW23, medium beige in most foundations) with neutral-pink undertones.

The highlight part is a soft pink shade when when applied does brighten up and bring forth the area without any apparent shimmer. The pink hue does give a slight rosiness (without looking too pink) which makes your complexion look healthy and radiant. I love using this powder on areas you would regularly highlight and also love using this to set my under eye concealer.

The contour part is a medium bronze also with pink undertone. It ois not too grey yet it does lean a bit towards cool tone and doesn’t make the skin look dirty. Though this powder will help me get defined cheeks, it imparts a very natural-looking understated contour, nothing too dramatic. This color can also be used as contour blush which means you could apply this color on your cheeks in place of blush to give some warmth and color while slimming down the face.  But be careful to use a very light hand for application on the cheeks and top it up with some highlight to give dimension. I also use this bronzer along the hair line, jawline and it gives a beautiful bronzed sun-kissed look to the skin. A product I can think of which is quite similar to this will be the NARS Contour blush in the shade Paloma.

Pigmentation and Look on skin:  The pigmentation of both the powders is sheer but easily build-able. I do like the fact that the contour applies sheer which makes it very beginner friendly. You can overdo this bronzer easily. Even when it is built up in layers, it never looks too powdery on the skin. This powder has never accentuated or stuck to the dry patches of my skin or accentuated my pores. The highlight when applied also effectively mattfies the skin by absorbing any excess oil or moisture from cream product but it doesn’t let the skin look flat.

Staying Power:  The staying power is quite good. It wears beautifully throughout the day. There is very little fading. It also controls oil and helps the skin stay shine free.

Overall, I really do love this contour kit by Marc Jacobs. This particular “Dream” variant is a bit different from regular contour colors which are usually grey and yellow toned, but I own a lot of those, so it’s a welcome change. Though this is a very expensive kit which is expected with high-end brand makeup, the extreme user and beginner friendliness, ease of use, high quality, and “blend-ability” of the powders and sleek packaging make this product a stand out. Though this still does not beat my all-time favorite Shade + Light contour kit by Kat Von D which has a lot more shade selection in one palette and comes in a similar price range, but I still think it is good enough to recommend.
