Maybelline Watershine Lipstick

I have always been a lip gloss girl.  I always shied away from lipstick because I have tried many shades and they looked simply awful and then it hit me why; all the lipsticks I’d tried so far were my mom’s and she being lighter-skinned than I am, needs different colors for her face. She always looked so nice in them, and I used to wonder why I didn’t look at least halfway decent in them!

Maybelline Lipstick

I realized that I needed to try shades of my own and decided to start with a simple nude lip color.  Since it was my first time with lipstick, I decided to try a drugstore brand (naturally) and who should come to my rescue but Maybelline! not to mention IMBB. I poked about and armed with suggestions for nude colors, I went to NewU to buy my first lipstick. I asked for My Mahogany, Warm Me Up, Totally Toffee, and they didn’t have any of them. They had packaged lipsticks, but not testers, and I am wary of buying without testing first.

Also, the SA was totally useless. I asked her for nude shades and she didn’t know what I meant (and looked very VERY shocked! 😛 ), then I asked for light colors, and she gave me, well, dark colors, so I ended up telling her that I would check them out myself! I pulled tube after tube out, and finally spotted this pretty color. I tried it on my hand, then on my lips, then bought it right away! :yahoo:

Basic silver colored packaging, with a pretty tight cap. You can quite easily toss this into a bag and not have to worry about it coming off.

The case catches fingerprints very easily, which I hate, but it doesn’t matter much. It doesn’t look tacky like the pink packaging used to.  These lipsticks don’t have names; only numbers. I wish they had names, would make it easier to remember them!

I totally adore this color. I’m glad that there is finally a lipstick that I look quite nice in. It is a brown-nude, with pink tones. It is a perfect nude for me. I do not want a nude that is exactly my lip color, for then what’s the point? 😛 I wanted one that stands out a bit, but still looks pretty natural. This goes amazingly well with dark/smokey eyes. It is basically a brown, but has pink tones to it.  Somehow, all my pictures show the pink tones prominently, save for the last picture with my webcam.

The texture of this lipstick is simply amazing. It glides on so smooth, and feels like butter on a hot pan. It gives a glossy appearance, and totally lives up to its name – “Watershine.”

I do not feel any need whatsoever to apply lip balm beforehand. This lipstick works as a lip balm, lipstick, lip gloss rolled into one!

Staying Power:

This is the only con with this lipstick.  It performs wonderfully in all other areas, but here is where it fails, abysmally. It stays for a maximum of 2 hours, without eating or drinking or talking   It doesn’t travel outside the lip line or anything, it just disappears! It doesn’t dry my lips out though, as it fades, so at least that part’s okay.  I really wish it stayed better.

Swatch 5

Yeah, I know 😛 . I look like I’m waiting for something to jump out at me from the closet! and I so dislike this weather for my skin! It’s become all dry and white-patchy! 🙁

Actually, the last picture is what it looks like for real, in person. Go figure! 😛

Now coming to the pros and cons of this lipstick.

Pros of Maybelline Watershine Pure Lipstick in B22:

  • Great nude shade for skin tones similar to mine.
  • Absolutely fantastic texture. Smooth, creamy, and glides like a dream!
  • You don’t have to bother with a gloss or a lip balm if you’re wearing this.
  • Inexpensive.
  • Pretty okay packaging.
  • Assorted shades to choose from.
  • Moisturizing and didn’t dry out my lips at all, even when it faded off.
  • Has just the right amount of pigmentation/coverage for me.  It is semi-sheer, not strongly pigmented, but just enough to evenly coat my lips with one color.
  • Available easily.
  • Good as a top coat for matte lipsticks.
  • Buildable color, as one swipe is sheer, two swipes is slightly less sheer and multiple swipes is semi-sheer, but gives good coverage.
  • No smell or taste at all.
  • Ingredients are mentioned on the plastic encasing when you buy it. Obviously, I threw it away thoughtlessly 🙁
  • Feels wonderfully light on lips.
  • Not sticky at all.
  • Does not bleed/travel outside the lip line.

Cons of Maybelline Watershine Pure Lipstick in B22:

  • Terrible staying power, thus requires frequent reapplication

Final Verdict on Maybelline Watershine Pure Lipstick in B22:

If you don’t mind re-application (very frequent re-application 😛 ), and want a cheap alternative to other more expensive brands, this is a great lipstick to try out. Remember to exfoliate well before you use this lipstick.  I am hopelessly in love with the color, but hate its low staying power. Any suggestions for similar shades in other brands? Its true color is in my webcam picture, and in the swatch on my hand in natural light. I’m thinking of trying Lotus Bubbly Nude. What do you guys think?

I like the look of Warm Me Up and My Mahogany. Unfortunately, they weren’t available. 🙁
I’ll try looking for Revlon’s Ginger Rose – it looks fabulous. Also, no MAC where I live. :/
Thank you for the suggestions – will totally get these once this one’s over! 😀

  2. hi, Sam! great review, so detailed and with lots of lip swatch photos. nice colour on you. what’s the black eyeliner you have used in them? is it from revlon?

  3. Nice nude shade Samantha.. :thanks:
funny abt te SA getting shocked, i too had a similar experience when i went 2 an H&G store in Chennai..  the SA was almost at the verge of bashing me on the head!!!

  4. i am pretty aware of the terrible staying power of these lipsticks bt i plan on getting one in summers soon. the color suits you well. :puchhi:

which nail paint are you wearing? 🙂

    1. Thank you Rati! :))
The nail paint is Streetwear Olive Drab with a golden micro-glitter coat over it. 🙂

  5. this is my kinda of shade, bcos in my office ppl stare at me even if i wear a little darker shade that this, this will be my next buy :pompom: :pompom: :pompom:

    1. same here Neha……quite surprised u saying that   …last mnth i had gone make up shopping n i asked the SA fr these ones….she said out of stock and they might be discontinued soon 😐 …wonder if thats true :waiting: :waiting:

    2. Neha… U dont have a maybelline range of lippie.. i thought u own all ranges of maybelline.. they must start giving u gift hampers for the highest buyer of this year ( coming years too 😛 😉 )

    3. Maybe these can be your New Year’s buy! 😛
But if you’re okay with terrible staying power, get these lippies. They’re gorgeous! :))

  6. lovely shade.. bt the last thng i would want to do is reapplication of lipsticks in my office.. i wont reapply anythng bt lipbal there.. if u hate to reapply go for Lotus floral stay, its stays for 4-6 hrs on me…. 🙂

    1. I agree, Visakhi! :))
I can’t reapply lipstick at my desk (stares galore) and I can’t keep going to the back and applying it either! 🙁 I only reapply lipbalm if I need to very badly.
I think my next lippie will be Lotus Floralstay. Have heard so many good things about it! 😀
      Thank you!
