Melacare Ointment For Scar Removal and Hyperpigmentation

Disclaimer:  This product that I am reviewing today has been prescribed to me by a doctor and should only be applied after consulting a certified doctor.  I am reviewing this product to let you people know that ointments like these are available in the market which remove scars and hyperpigmentation.  This product has worked effectively for me, but it doesn’t mean it would work for you in the same way.  Doctor’s recommendation should be sought before purchasing the cream.

When we receive skin related queries on “Ask IMBB,” we always advise people to consult a dermatologist for the related issue.  We do this because good dermatologists do have some magic potions that treat skin issues overnight.  Today, I am going to review a dermatologist-prescribed product for those who are struggling to remove patches, acne marks, hyperpigmentation from their skin.  This has worked wonderfully for me, but as stated in the disclaimer, please consult your doctor before using it.

Price:

Rs.  118 for 15 gm.

Ingredients:

Melacare Ingredients

Adverse Reactions:

Hyperpigmentation Ointment

Mild stinging to severe irritation has been reported when using this preparation.  Occasional hypersenstivity (localized contact dermatitis may develop).  If  hypersensitivity occurs, the medication should be discontinued and physician consulted immediately).

My Take on Melacare Ointment:

For me, this ointment has worked like “MAGIC.”  When I started using this ointment, applying it overnight and washing it off the next morning, I was not expecting such drastic results; however, within 3 days, a lot of my scars, sun burns, and bleach reactions cleared away.  There were some sun burn patches near my eye area that cleared off completely.  Though I think stubborn acne marks are taking longer, around 1 to 10 days to clear up completely, it is working on all types of scars.  This ointment consists of three main ingredients – Hydroquinone, Tretinoin, and Mometasone Furoate.

Hyperpigmentation Ointment 1

Here is a bit info about all three of them (source: wikipedia):

Hydroquinone:

In medical literature, hydroquinone is considered the primary topical ingredient for inhibiting melanin production.  Its components have potent antioxidant abilities.  Topical hydroquinone comes in 2% (available in cosmetics) to 4% (or more) concentrations (available from a physician or by prescription), alone or in combination with tretinoin 0.05% to 0.1%. Research has shown hydroquinone and tretinoin to prevent sun- or hormone-induced melasma.

Tretinoin:

Tretinoin is the acid form of vitamin A and is also known as all-trans retinoic acid or ATRA. It is a first generation topical retinoid commonly used to treat acne vulgaris. Users of tretinoin have to avoid sunlight, as the skin can tan. Using tretinoin makes the skin more sensitive to UVA and UVB rays.

Mometasone Furoate:

Mometasone furoate is used in the treatment of inflammatory skin disorders (such as eczema and psoriasis), allergic rhinitis (such as hay fever), asthma for patients unresponsive to less potent corticosteroids.

With me, its a vicious circle, I clear off scars by using Melacare, then I get acne and I pick on them, and have to use Melacare again 🙁  The first marks to disappear are sunburns and allergic reaction patches.  Acne marks take some time to fade away but they do go away nonetheless.

This cream has helped me control acne, but I strictly use this as anti-scar ointment.  I do not like to use it as an anti-acne ointment.  For controlling acne, I use Adapalene gel.

Melacare

Some Warnings:

  • This is a very effective anti-hyperpigmentation cream and quickly aids in cell renewal, but at the same time, it makes skin super sensitive to sun.  I had once stepped out without any sunscreen and immediately got a sun burn and I had to use Melacare again to get rid of that patch.  So, wear a good-quality sunscreen with high protection that would suit your skin type even when you are not stepping out under direct sun.

Melacare Ointment

  • Once the pigmentation marks clear up, don’t use this cream repeatedly over the area.  It might give white patches.
  • Use this ointment strictly as spot treatment on the affected area and not on the entire face.
  • Once you see your face clearing up, you would be tempted to use it as a fairness cream, but please don’t.  Everything done in excess is bad, there are so many non-medicated creams available, try those 🙂

Anti Pigmentation

I have reviewed this cream for all those who have used a zillion creams and treatments to get rid of scars/marks/pigmentation and have now lost hope.  Ask your doctor whether you can use this cream, and see how it works 🙂

  1. Jomo, I know this shud work , I was given a cream by my derma wid almost same ingredients list, I think uska Naam lomelalite tha 🙂

    1. Nupurizzzzzzzzz……it worked na….for me too, but main only spots par lagati hooon…..did it give you any side effects 😕

  2. OMG guys.. dont risk it… i hav used this.. Jomol be careful.. For 2-3 months it worked and then when i went out WITH SUNSCREEN i had gone wayyyyyy darker than before n got reaction to it like small small prickly heat kinda… man it was so hard to get rid of.. Then I tried again after a month it gave amazing results but then again when stopped using it , it gave me badddd reaction… then again i tried twice b4 my friend’s wedding to get tht glow but in 3hours i got reaction… those spots or dots leave tiny black marks …. im never sensitive to anythg in my life.. after this product, my whole skin has been changed and it got a bit sensitive…

My friend who has sensitive skin used this once but it was ok.. second time she used n she got worst reaction lik mine…

these reactions r dry, itchy n hard to heal for more than a week… it was so embarassing.. cant use noraml moisturiser coz again it will agrevate more reaction.. worse than eczema.. yes it works in the beginning but its dangerous… I used it on hands too.. my poor hands has been sensitive ever since…. its ok to use on scars used by fire lik tht.. i mean tht intense… but even after u stop after tht scar is vanished u can see those prickly heat kinda dots again.. but will go away in a week n its not much noticable.. im not talking about using it on face scars now… Jomol be very careful dear… try likas papaya soap n richfeel whitening lotion… it works gr8.. i will definitely do a review on both so guys can choose… Love u all IMBBians.. im often invisible but I AM here… 🙂

      1. Thanks Arch for sharing, but as I have mentioned, not to be used like a fairness cream. Once you have got rid of the patches, you should stop it because tretinion makes you more prone to UVA and UVB rays. I used it to get rid of my patches, that’s it 🙂

      2. For melasma I use hhlite & aziderma my doctor prescribed me..but when I stop using this the dark patches comes back again,I have facing same problem like arch.

    1. Nafisa…….as Arch said, it might react badly if you use it all over the face for a long period of time. It should be used a spot treatment and it works that way 🙂

    1. Arch…….I think all anti-acne and anti-pigmentation creams make your skin sensitive, its better to take all precautions while using them and again not to be used on long-term basis, remember, as i said in the review, excess of anything is bad 😛

      1. Yes Jomol .. You are right… The parlour lady made me use it for two months straight on my whole face n neck because she said it will help with diamond peeling i was going under… Ahhh if i had the sense i have now i would have known.. i learnt the hard way 🙁

  3. OMG. I need this so bad. I’ll search If I get anything like this here.

And @everyone : anything you use that has a peeling kinda effect MUST be accompanied by a sunscreen. even Retinol products. most of the times they mention it while suggesting the product!!!

    1. Bee…..well said….I think Arch who got severe reaction to it used it on her hands and entire face and that’s why the bad reaction. It is not supposed to be used like that, apply only to the affected area overnight and cleanse it off in the morning 🙂 Not to be used as a face cream or body cream 🙂

  4. As Jomol very rightly said, please consult your doc, before using this cream, since it has tretinoin; which is a FDA CATEGORY C DRUG.
Tretinoin is contra-indicated to be used during PREGNANCY & BREASTFEEDING, as it can cause MALFORMATIONS in the developing babies. 🙁

Please be careful all you beautiful IMBBians.

    1. Exactly what I wanted to say. Any gal using this MUST use effective contaception! And also, Mometasone is a potent steroid. So avoid using for long duration, without supervision

    2. Chars, thanks for the info : I want to add that a majority of drugs cause malformations in baby if consumed during pregnancy, so stay off all it 🙂

  5. These can also cause skin cancer in prolonged use. hydroquinone and tretinoin have a good short term but ill long term effect, therefore should be used only after a dermatologist’s recommendation. This is not to scare you guys but since I am a doctor I thought of making you aware 🙂

    1. Tanya…that;s what I said, please consult a doctor and do not use for long term. Every drug for whatever use it is, would cause side effects if used for long term.

  6. jo… i have like sm tiny spots n freckles tht dsnt react to kojic acid. but im so s*** scared of hq… 🙁 hmmmm shd ask a doc abt this……

    1. Ife….if you have known allergic reaction HQ, don’t use it, but consult a doctor to know how to get rid of the freckles 🙂

  7. i had the same condition but doctor prescribed me glycolic acid 12% … it has reduced my pigmentation marks and even acne scars … but the lightening effect was a slow process and it took around 4- 6 weeks …. now i am confused which ointment to use

  8. Hey hi5.. I also used adapalene for my acnes.. 🙂 waiting for clinique review.. meanwhile bought vichy after reading so many positive reviews know..

  9. mines was from curito though and it dint have so many ingredient but Hydroquinone was definitely there and it worked wonders.

  10. hi,

I have to attend my cousin marriage after one month & suddenly i got a lot pimple all over my face, now my doctor prescribed me to use melacare at night for 1. hours.
I just want to know how to much time it will take to remove those ugly marks.

    Reema

  11. Hey Jomol, thanks for reviewing this one for us! jus thought to share my experience too with melacare, and ya this sure shows significant results in the first use both on pigmentation n scars but sadly once you stop, the marks shows up again:(!
