MUA Makeup Academy Sage 3 In 1 Extreme Contour Eye Pen Review

Hello Sweethearts,

After a long time I am reviewing a MUA product. It’s a contour liner pen which I had reviewed earlier in the shade brown, and today’s shade is called Sage. So, let’s start.

MUA Makeup Academy Sage 3 In 1 Extreme Contour Eye Pen

Details: Create the look with this fantastic 3 in1 Contour Eye Pen. The angles of the nib allows you to create different looks whatever your occasion. Add drama by creating big and bold eyes, go glamorous for a soft and sultry effect, or define eyes for an ultra chic finish.

Price: INR 550 for 0.4 grams.

How to Apply:

The eyeliner has a very unique tapered or angled tip shape, which makes it super easy to make the perfect flick or wing. Basically the product is to be used as an eyeshadow base or primer, you can say! But you can use it in different ways as well. One can use the thin part to line eyes precisely and create that winged liner look very easily; it’s super easy to create flicks with the unique shape of the liner. One can also use the mid part of the liner to line the waterline and on the crease line. And the widest part can be used to make a thick line or fill the lids.

No matter how you are using the liner, one will definitely have to set the liner with a same colored eyeshadow or pat some loose powder. The pencil can be worked with different angles of the single tip, that’s why it has been named ‘3 in 1 contour pen’.

My Take On MUA Makeup Academy Sage 3 In 1 Extreme Contour Eye Pen:

Packaging: The immediate packaging of the liner is in a black color cardboard box, with all details printed in silver fonts over it. The liner comes in a black colored body, with a twisting mechanism. One can find a shade indicating sticker with the shade name, only on the outer pack. Otherwise you won’t have any shade name or color indicator, if you throw the outer box. It becomes quite difficult to search for a particular shade in your stash.

Shade: As the name says, sage is a grayish green color with silver metallic sheen to it. The liner has more gray than green, and after layering, the color somewhat looks like khaki. So this shade is perfect to be used on every green, khaki and even grayish eye shadow.

Texture and Pigmentation: The liner is very creamy and smooth in texture. And as it’s so creamy, it therefore requires something to set, for it to last longer. The liner glides effortlessly on eyelids without dragging, blending effortlessly. One can easily create the smoked effect by blending this color. The liner is slightly oil based, which also makes it quite greasy. The greasy formula makes the color settle easily into the crease lines. Even if one sets the liner with a powder shadow, it still creases after many hours of application.

The greasy formula doesn’t make it an apt base for oily eyelids. The liner applies quite sheerly and the pigmentation is extremely sheer in one swipe, but the color is easily buildable. I need to swipe the liner 6-7 times to get an intense color. The shadow is not very pigmented in itself, however, it doubles the intensity and boldness of any average or less pigmented eyeshadows. I just need to pat the powder shadow once on my eyes and voila! I got super bold color on my eyes, with just one swipe of the average pigmented eyeshadow.

Staying Power: As I said above the creamy liner or shadow base needs a setting spray or loose powder, to stay in place for hours. I use my Revlon Colorstay Link Eyeshadow in Khaki for the job. This not only intensifies the shadow color, but the combination lasted on me for more than 5 hours. There was a mild fading and creasing by the fifth hour but still the color was looking so vibrant on my eyes.

Being an oil based product, it smudges easily and doesn’t last long when worn alone as a liner. So if you want to use this as an eyeliner, I’ll suggest to pat a same colored shadow with the help of a thin angular brush, this will not only intensify the color of the liner but will also make it last long on eyelids.

Pros of MUA Makeup Academy Sage 3 In 1 Extreme Contour Eye Pen:

• Can be used with various eyeshadows.
• A multipurpose product which can be just used as an eye liner or as a shadow base.
• The angled tip of the shadow helps to create different looks.
• Super creamy and smooth texture.
• Glides effortlessly on eye lids, without dragging.
• The liner is super easy to work with.
• Very easily blendable.
• Doubles the intensity of any average pigmented eyeshadow.
• Great product for dry eyelids.
• The liner stays put for more than 5 hours when being set with a corresponding color powder shadow.
• The cream and powder duo is waterproof and smudge proof to great extent.

Cons of MUA Makeup Academy Sage 3 In 1 Extreme Contour Eye Pen:

• As the shadow don’t set dry on eyelids, using it alone is useless.
• The greasy formula of the liner makes it accentuate the crease lines and not a very apt product for oily eyelids.
• In a way, the name of the product is a bit misleading. It would be better if they would have named it a shadow crayon or something like that. With this name, many may think this as long lasting eyeliner.
• Poorly pigmented.
• It’s necessary to set the liner with a same colored shadow base, in order to make it last for long.
• Creases after few hours when used on the whole lid as a shadow base.

Will I Recommend MUA Makeup Academy Sage 3 In 1 Extreme Contour Eye Pen?
Yes, I’ll recommend this unique product to everyone. Despite of the cons, this makes a great product, especially as an eyeshadow base. I would love to buy one more shade of these.

IMBB Rating: 2/5 if used as a liner, without powder setting; and 4.6/5 as an eyeshadow base.
