My Skin Care Routine – Oily, Acne Prone, Sensitive Skin

Hey everyone,

Hope all of you are reading and enjoying skin care posts from our IMBB team 🙂 You can read Rati’s, Monika’s, and Shikha’s routine by clicking on the respective links and Saloni’s and Rashmita’s  shower and hair care routine here and here.  All of us have different skin and hair types, so hope these posts are helpful to you 🙂  Talking about myself, my skin’s status is “it’s complicated!” 😛 I have oily, acne-prone, sensitive skin with acne breakouts that show up quite often.  Only certain products suit my skin, so I have to be really careful while picking up the products.  I would like to share with you my skin care regimen that I am following currently 🙂
My Skin Care Routine Oily Acne Prone

Cleansers:  Starting with cleansers, I have found the perfect cleanser for my skin type in Cetaphil Cleansing Lotion for sensitive skin.  It’s PERFECT! No stinging, no harsh chemicals! Recently, I stumbled upon Olay 7-in-1 Foaming Face Wash and it’s the best that I have used – cleans without drying out the face!

Cetaphil Cleansing Lotion

Scrubs and Exfoliators:  Coming to my favorite skin care product, Lotus Herbals Apriscrub is a staple, I never let that run out, ever! MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator is a second favorite – it makes skin instantly smooth! I have recently picked VLCC Diamond Polishing Face Scrub which has gritty granules, good for frequent exfoliation, but I don’t like the oily residue on my face.

Scrubs

Face Washes:  I like foaming face washes and that’s why Pond’s Activated Charcoal Deep Cleansing Facial Foam scores high with me. Dreamlite Face Wash was prescribed to me by my dermatologist.  This face wash is not foaming but it has AHA granules which helps even out skin tone.

Face washes

Facial oil/Face Serum:  I haven’t had much luck with facial oils or serums.  Most of the face serums break out my skin, so I am a little wary about trying them.

However, I will tell you about stuff that works for oily and acne-prone skin – Clinique Smart Custom Repair Serum, Clinique Repairwear Laser Focus, Tarte Pure Maracuja Oil (Neetu gifted this to me :*), and SK-II Whitening Spot Specialist (it does not whiten the skin, but brightens up a bit, but is a  very good facial serum).

Face Masks:  I have not tried any face masks recently, the only ones that I have currently is the Biotique Bio Pistachio Face Pack.  I have also this red sandalwood billet which helps clear up acne marks and add a glow to the skin. It takes quite a bit of effort to get a paste out of it, but ahem, I always do find someone do that job for me 🙂

Red sandalwood face pack

For the eyes:  You can always find I-Kul bottles in my bag, I can’t do without it! My eyes turn red whenever I drive, so I need this thing to clear the redness. Also, this SK-II signs eye mask is something I use to moisturize my under eye area.

Eye mask

Makeup Removers:  I usually use Olay foaming cleanser to take down regular makeup, but if my makeup is waterproof, TBS Camomile Cleansing Butter does the trick for me. MAC Mineralize Charged Water Cleanser is another favorite of mine, it has no alcohol content and does not dry out the skin.

The body shop cleansing butter

For the lips:  I have one of the best healing lip balms out there – Amilab lip balm – it’s a soothing, moisturizing, and repairing lip balm.

Lip balm

Also, sharing a few of my favorite lipsticks – three shades from L’Oreal Exclusive Pinks (JLo, Aishwarya’s Pink, and Eva).

Pink lipsticks

Rati gifted me these three lippies, love ya Ms. Singh :* Also, I am addicted to this Sugar Cosmetics “The Big Bang Berry.”

To clear dry patches:  Sometimes, when I use acne clearing ointments, I develop these dry patches, and to clear those away, these two help me – Nivea After Shave Balm! Did you know, you can use this as a primer! Yeah, you heard me right, it’s all over the youtube. I tried using it as a primer, but the glycerin content in the balm greases up my oily skin; however, if you have dry or normal skin, you could try! Then, there’s this lotion Eubos something, it’s a German drugstore brand usually for baby’s skin, and this particular one for extremely dry skin, but I stole it from my son 😛 for my acne-related dryness.

Lotion

Toners: I am not happy with toners (again because of glycerin content in most toners), but when I have to use toners, these are the ones that I have currently with me – L’Occitane Angelica Face Toner and L’Occitane’s Brightening Mist.

Toners

That’s it, my simple skin care routine, I have a bevy of anti-acne ointments, but that should be strictly taken under the advice of a dermatologist, so skipping that section 🙂

I also keep Patanjali Aloe vera gel handy to soothe irritated skin,

Special mention to Maybelline Fit Me Foundation – it’s the best for regular wear.  I have tried and tested so many foundations, but truly this one has become my absolute favorite.

  1. Yayyyy!!! Loved your product picks Jomo 🙂 Though I don’t have oily skin, I can still use few for my oily T zone I guess. Bookmarked!
Patanjali gel seems to be a favourite of all!

  2. Ah! I was really looking forward to this post. I have always loved all of your posts on IMBB Jomol (especially the gold collection ones :P). Anyway, you use so many scrubs, I would like to try MAC one now. I have heard so much about this shave balm as primer, didn’t know it could be used for dry patches.

  3. good post 🙂 but i guess you can just have one scrub because too many might be harmful on skin . If it works, then who am i to complain 🙂

  4. Perfect compilation Jomol 🙂 I need to try the clinique and Mac volcanic ash next (y) this is gonna help a lot for ppl looking for similar skin care concerns. And hey how have u been 🙂 happy belated holi n easter

  5. Hello jomol di.I hve SM skin like u.I knw hw this acne cream makes skin dry and red.The best way to combat this dryness is to apply fresh aloevera jel from plant not the package one.it soothes irritated skin

  6. Hey jomo..my skin condition is very similar to yours.. I use cetaphil in combination with the himalaya oil balancing lemon face wash.. Which you must try once.. Its make my skin clear and gives me a glow each time i use due to honey and lemon in it.. For toner i use the fabindia rose water toner.

  7. Hi Jomol,

I have same skin as yours. Thanks for sharing your routine.
I use Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture Combination Skin.
You too should give it a try, it works wonders on oily-acne-prone skin as well as on dry patches. And it never causes breakouts. Another HG product I use is Khadi Herbal Rose & Aloe Vera Herbal Face Massage Gel. It helps to reduce the pore size as well as calms the skin very well. I keep it in the fridge for extra coolness. Try if you are not allergic to rose/rosewater.
    Hope you like these.

  8. Hi Jomol,
I was waiting for this post as I also have the similar oily, acne-prone, sensitive skin. I love reading your detailed reviews.
Right now I am religiously using the Clinique 3 step guide with the face wash, toner and DDMgel meant for type 3 skin.
I also use cetaphil cleansing lotion for sensitive skin, Biotique pistachio face pack, Lacto calamine oil control and aloe vera gel from the plant. I am trying to get rakthachandanam as I have heard about its benefits for oily skin.
Girls from Chennai pls let me know from where can I get red sandalwood powder.

    1. Hi Swetha,

You can get quality good red sandalwood powders in the local medicine shops that are exclusively for pure herbal powder packets like sandalwood, red sandalwood, mehendi and so on. You would get really authentic ones for a reasonable price 🙂

  9. Love your post 🙂 As I also have same kind of skin so I love try some products from your list. It looks amazing.. And I have just bought this Nivea After Shave Balm, hope it will works nice on me 🙂 🙂

  10. Please list the ingredients of dream lite facewash..looking for an alternative to aha glow as its too expensive now

  11. Jomo, *Hihihi*. Just loved your post sincerely. I like the way how you do justice to the details and yet manage to keep it simple and crisp 🙂 It really is a useful post for majority of us fall into either of the three categories.
