NARS Dragon Girl Velvet Matte Lip Pencil Review

NARS Dragon Girl Velvet Matte Lip Pencil Review

It took me a while to get comfortable wearing red lipstick. I used to have this thinking that it was suitable to wear only during evenings or on dressy occasions, but I realized that there’s really no “appropriate” time to wear red lipstick. You can wear it whenever and however you want and that’s that and I think that’s the attitude to have when wearing this particular red lipstick – Nars Dragon Girl Velvet Matte Lip Pencil.

Product Description:

The application of a lipstick combined with the convenience of a pencil in a jumbo crayon design. Lips are instantly saturated with rich pigments and a velvety matte finish. The long lasting, non-drying formula is enriched with emollients for a creamy texture, while a combination of unique silicones ensures long-lasting, seamless color for hours. Use for lining, all-over lip color, or pairing with another lip product.

My Take on NARS Dragon Girl Velvet Matte Lip Pencil:

Dragon Girl is a bright, cherry red. It’s a cool-toned red with noticeable pink in it. It’s a very vibrant color. I remember my mouth making a little “O” of surprise when I first applied it fully on my lips 😛

This stains the lips, and that is how I like to wear it on a jaunt to the mall or to a favorite snack place in the afternoons. I apply a moderate amount by touching the pencil to my lips, then blend it out using my ring finger. When I really feel like having red lips, I apply it more heavily, like when I am going on a movie date with my husband. Nars Dragon Girl is an intense color, but it’s pretty and fun at the same time. I find it to be versatile that way.  I think it makes me look more pulled together and my lips more lush.

The finish of Dragon Girl is matte, since it’s a Velvet Matte Lip Pencil. I think the matte finish suits the color well. For a matte, Dragon Girl doesn’t make my lip lines dry spots over-emphasized but understandably, it can make them look more obvious. I find Dragon Girl to be a bit drying on my lips, but nothing too bad.  This has a smooth, gliding texture and it doesn’t feel dry for a matte. It glides easily on the lips and doesn’t pull on them. It’s not at all like a traditional lip liner/pencil which can feel hard or dry.

Something I have trouble with is applying Dragon Girl precisely. It’s so pigmented that a light touch of the pencil gives a lot of color. The tip of the pencil is also more of a rounded shape instead of a sharp one, so when I use it to outline my lips first, and then fill the rest in, my application tends to look a little sloppy. I have better success using a lip brush (defeats the purpose of this being in pencil form, I know).

Nars Dragon Girl, as I said, stains. Much of the color remains on my lips by the end of the day. It really lasts long. It survives through a meal, but can look patchy afterwards, so I either smudge it and apply more, or erase completely and put on a fresh layer.
I am also wearing the NARS Cyprus Eyeshadow here, though it’s barely visible in the pic.

Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencils cost 25 USD. Here in Manila, they cost 1450 PHP or approximately 1990 INR.

Pros of NARS Dragon Girl Velvet Matte Lip Pencil:

  • Gorgeous red shade.
  • Has a matte finish which complements the color.
  • Highly pigmented.
  • Has a smooth, gliding feel and texture.
  • Does not over emphasize lip lines or flaky areas.
  • Has no scent or taste.
  • Lasts quite long on the lips.
  • I personally don’t find it overly drying, not bad for a matte lip product.

Cons of NARS Dragon Girl Velvet Matte Lip Pencil:

  • Expensive.
  • I find it hard to apply precisely; or to use it as a lip liner.
  • Has to be sharpened, inconvenient and causes product wastage.

Overall:

This is a vibrant, gorgeous matte red which I find to be versatile and pulls my look together. It also provides smooth application and wears long. A must-try if you are looking to try bright reds, matte reds, or just wonderful red lipsticks in general.

    1. mily jain am sorry to know what Nars is not available in India. But you do have a Sephora, which is awesome. 🙂 Dragon Girl is a terrific red!

  4. Beautiful color; looks even lovelier on you. I wish NARS would make their lip pencils push up/self sharpening. It pains me to see so much (expensive) product being wasted! *waaa*

    1. Devie, totally! I have a Dolce Vita Velvet Matte Lip Pencil which I’ve sharpened a couple of times already…I always cringe when I see the pigment left in the sharpener. I could’ve gotten 3 uses or so out of that. *nonono*

Also, thank you so much. 🙂

    1. Rati, thank you! 🙂 I think this color would look stunning on pretty much anybody. 😀 Oh I would so love to see you do a Nars haul! Their new Satin Lip Pencils have a lovely texture.
