By now, I have tried the three formulas of NARS lip pencils – there’s Satin, Matte, and Gloss—and I can say that the Satin Lip Pencil is my favorite. Named after a majestic garden in Iran – Golshan is one of the reds in this line.

NARS describes Golshan as a “spiced wine.” Mmm, tasty.  Truth be told, this is not a shade I would likely choose because I gravitate towards light/MLBB/sheer colors these days, but I found the description for Golshan rather attractive.

It’s not far off either. Golshan, to my eyes, is a wine red. A warm, deep red with a subtle shine to its finish. On my warm, NC 30-35 skin tone, I find it so much easier to pull off than a blue-based red, such as NARS Dragon Girl. Not that I don’t like Dragon Girl (or other blue-based reds), I just find that with Golshan, I don’t have to think how to set up the rest of my face as much. It’s not as dramatic on my skin tone, but it packs a punch just the same!

I said that the Satin Lip Pencil is my favorite among NARS three lip pencil formulas. Why? Because it glides like butter on the lips. Seriously, that’s how Golshan applies on my lips. It is super smooth, and the tip of the pencil slides easily on the surface of the lips with a light touch. Yet it doesn’t have any greasy, or balm-like, or heavy feel at all. It’s very lightweight on the lips.

The pigmentation of it is pretty awesome too. It’s opaque in one swipe. I like to apply it by lining my lips with it first, using little pressure, then filling them in with feathery strokes. That results in rich color and a lip that for me is already quite bold. After eating or as the color wears off, it turns into a softer version. Or you could go straight to wearing it as a stain, which can be achieved by blotting the product on the lips. Wear time for me is around six hours.

I find this product neither drying nor hydrating on the lips. It’s kinder on the lips than the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils.  It has a very subtle, sweet scent that doesn’t bother my nose at all.

• Doesn’t catch easily on dry spots.
• Doesn’t gather in lip lines.
• The color looks beautiful whether worn fully, sheer, or as a stain.
• Doesn’t turn patchy as it fades.
• Long wear time.
• Not drying on the lips.
• Light scent.
• No discernible taste.

Cons of NARS Satin Lip Pencil – Golshan:

• Has to be sharpened, results in product wastage.
• Pricey.

Would I Repurchase NARS Satin Lip Pencil – Golshan?

Overall Recommendation:

This lip pencil applies easily and beautifully. Very smooth, very pigmented, yet lightweight. I would recommend trying the NARS Satin Lip Pencils if you have the chance. Golshan is a warm-toned wine red that I bet would look good on most warm skin tones. I find the color to be versatile too. If you have a warm complexion and find that you have trouble pulling off blue-toned or brighter shades of red, check out Golshan.
