NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in Baroque Review

NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in Baroque Review

Hey guys!

So, I have been fascinated with makeup and fashion for as long as I can remember. I love how a swipe of lipstick or a hot pair of shoes can instantly boost self-confidence. I blame Cinderella; yes, the fairy tale. It was my first introduction to the power of a makeover and since then, I pretty much lap up any book, television show or movie that features a makeover story. How bad is my obsession? I spent all of last weekend binge watching “Get the Look” a makeover show on NDTV Good Times. It’s a decent show, but makes me cringe when the host (the gorgeous Ambika Anand) and the “experts” get a little too nasty and judgey about the participants’ looks.  It seems that the host and these experts equate feeling good with fitting in. I’d love to see a show where people aren’t criticized, but are embraced for their “flaws.” And where makeovers aren’t about creating clones, but about expressing individuality. Finding an expression for my individuality is exactly why I love makeup. I don’t wear it to look “hot” (believe me buying the amount of makeup it’ll take to make me look hot will take you from BI to VIB Rogue at Sephora 😛 ) I wear makeup because it allows me to express different aspects of my personality and experiment with who I could be. Anyway, enough about my love for makeup (as if you don’t get to hear about that around here). Today, I’m sharing my thoughts on NARS’ Baroque velvet gloss pencil. To see how it performs, read on my friends!

My Experience with NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in Baroque:

NARS velvet gloss pencils are pretty popular on IMBB, and Baroque, in my humble opinion, is one of the most gorgeous colors from this line (Mexican Rose takes the top spot though).  Baroque is raspberry shade with little specks of silver that gives medium coverage to my lips. For people with lighter lips (mine are pretty pigmented), this will give fuller coverage.

This shade is buildable, so one layer is great for daytime wear and it’s often how I wear it to work. I like to wear two to three layers to create a striking evening look. Even though it does have bits of silver shimmer in it, they don’t look gaudy at all. The gloss isn’t OTT; it definitely gives lips a nice luster, but it’s not a dripping, goopy finish either.  I have expressed my dislike for wearing glossy lips in the daytime before, but this pencil gives you a sleek look that looks sophisticated both at night and in the day time. I believe Baroque is a universally flattering shade, I find it very easy to pull off on my NC 40 (tan, warm undertones) skin tone, and it’s sure to flatter both lighter and deeper skinned girls. Because it is pretty pigmented, it will show up on deep-toned lips.

What I absolutely love about this pencil is how moisturizing it is. My lips are pretty dry and I literally get chapstick withdrawals if I don’t apply it like 10 times a day. However, this does a great job of keeping my dry lips moisturized when I have it on. I can put it on without using any chapstick as primer and it provides continuous moisture and hydration to the lips. Another thing I absolutely love is how easily this glides on the lips. The pencil is soft, goes on smoothly and delivers color evenly. It’s super easy to apply and you can pretty much put this on with your eyes closed, no kidding. Which brings me to my next point: ease of use. This pencil is super easy to use; I just start by lining my lips with it and then applying it all over my lips. There’s no twisting, no mess – it’s foolproof! It’s also a great one-step product – a lipstick, a gloss and a liner all in one.

The color doesn’t feather or accentuate any lines on the lips. Once I have applied, it stays put on my lips and doesn’t bleed outside the lip line either. I love this because bleeding is an issue I have faced with a lot of glosses, so I especially appreciate glossy lips that don’t make me look like the joker after 2-3 hours of wear. This lasts for about 3 hours on my lips and leaves a raspberry-pink stain behind. Frankly, because of the rich color, I expected it to last longer, but 3 hours isn’t bad for a glossy finish. This gloss does transfer a little on to food and drink, but it’s not the worst I have ever seen.

Another drawback is one that we always experience with lip pencils – loss of product. You can’t sharpen this without losing product. It’s an extremely soft pencil that couldn’t be packaged any other way, I get that. But I absolutely dread sharpening it. It seems like I run through this way faster than any other lipstick or gloss.

NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil Baroque

Overall, this is a great lip color for those who want a classy but fun lip color without much fuss. This shade will look really pretty on desi skin tones and I can’t wait to rock it with Indian-wear. Because the color is buildable, you can layer it to play up lips or apply a light wash with a dramatic eye look. I really still don’t get why it’s called a “gloss pencil” and “glossy pencil” would be a more apt name for it (gloss pencil is more attention grabbing, I guess). I will definitely buy both this product and this particular shade again.

    1. Yup, Arpita! It’s raining NARS this month!!!! Let’s see what’s in store for June *happydance*
Glad you liked the shade 🙂

  1. Devie….I have seen on some shows that the makeover specialists can get really nasty and rip apart those who are getting the makeover. Though I like trinny and suzanna, I didn’t particularly like the makovers they did in India and they were not really kind to the participants. I liked Soha ali khan’s what not to wear – that was nice.

About the product, it’s a beautiful color Devie – and I love it on ur lips *woot* P.S. I am in love with crayon lip products courtesy Revlon just bitten lip balms *woot*

    1. Hahaha…Jomol you are too sweet for reading my “makeover” rant and actually replying *puchhi*
Trinny and Suzanna came to India? I had no idea!!!! (There goes this weekend 😛 watching that).
Soha Ali Khan giving out fashion advice is like Alia Bhatt lecturing at IIT…seriously?!!!! 😛 😛
It was on TLC, right? I’ll give it a shot (there goes next weekend!).
I tried out Just Bitten ages back…they were the ones that started it all, right? Or was it Clinique’s jumbo pencils?

      1. He he Devie *puchhi* *puchhi* You know – me just like you – I watch these makeover shows – even if they are downright bad *hihi* Even on band baaja bride, ambika anand and some other makeover specialists sometimes get nasty with the brides. There was this one episode which I saw where dr. bhoolabhai was pulling up a bride with crooked teeth about not doing something for her teeth before even though she was educated, WTH *hunterwali*

        1. If Dr. Bhoolabhai said that to me, he’d be left with no teeth of his own 😀
I used to like Big, Fat, Indian Wedding; haven’t seen Band Baaja Bride yet! Will catch some episodes soon 🙂 🙂

          1. Dr. bhoolabhai should be careful rofl rofl rofl rofl. Really, someone comes to him for makeover and he says that! imagine! Oh on TLC na….it was awesome Devie….larger than life weddings, totally used to enjoy that one – especially the wedding of fakeoos priya and vikram chatwal *hihi*

  2. awww devie, liked the way you expressed your feelings. i agree *haan ji* i think IMBB is celebrating NARS month 🙂 nice shade and perfect lip swatch *happy dance*

  3. Agree with the ease of application – with eyes closed – yes! This looks like a fun, yet not over the top color. Looks good in your lip swatch! 🙂

I wear makeup to play up different features and the whole routine makes me feel girly/glam/feminine. Basically because it’s fun. *happy dance*

    1. *thankyou* Do watch it! It’s entertaining overall and lot’s of glamour. But you’ll find yourself feeling embarrassed for the ‘experts’ as the nitpick the participants’ looks 😛

  4. I so agree about the makeover shows… They sometimes set weird standards for normal girls and it unhealthy i feel… 🙁 Btw i absolutely love this range by nars.. they have really created perfection through these pencils!! loved your lip swatch as always. And yeah i also dint enjoy trinny and suzanna india’s version. They …i dont know did what 😛 😛

    1. Hahah…this one episode this girl is like I hate wearing skirts, my mom won’t let me wear skirts and what do they do? They put her in a skirt *headbang* I’ll HAVE to watch Trinny and Sussanah in India now!

Yup, these pencils are pure love…but I go through them so fast, it’s crazy! NARS really killed it with these!!
