My Experience with Nars Velvet Gloss Pencil in Club Mix

Club Mix wasn’t even on my radar from this line, until I tested it out. The shade is aptly described as a sheer grape, although I’d add that it has hints of berry and blue to it. I bought this shade thinking it would be perfect to wear at night, but, interestingly, love wearing it in the day. The finish is glossy and it gives medium coverage to my lips. Compared to my earlier pick from this line, New Lover, this offers more coverage and lasts a little bit longer. This gives me 4 hours of wear and does leave a stain behind (although it’s barely noticeable on my pigmented lips).

What really works for me is how moisturizing this lip pencil is. My lips tend to get really dry through the day and this does a really great job keeping them moisturized. I don’t have to prime my lips with chapstick before using this either, which is great. That brings me to the next thing I love about this — the ease of application. Because I use it as a lip liner, lip stick, lip gloss and chapstick, it really is a grab-and-go kind of product. It’s great for work days, when I can touch up even without using a face mirror because it allows such precise application. The lip gloss does not bleed outside the lip line or feather, so it’s great for looking polished and put together without spending tons of time on your makeup routine.

This pencil is great for day-time wear because the glossy finish isn’t too over the top. The color, although on the darker side, offers just enough coverage to give the lips color but does not look too heavy or overdone. It’s conservative enough for work with basic eye makeup, yet fun enough for a night out with a smoky eye. I really love the versatility of this formula and shade. Because it’s such a great stand-alone product, I wish Nars has named this a “Glossy Lip Pencil” instead of a “Gloss Pencil.” I’ve tried it over another lipstick and it really didn’t add anything to the look. This works best when worn by itself (why mess with a good thing, right?). The product has no discernible taste or smell, which is weird because every time I apply it, I keep expecting it to taste and smell like grapes because of the color! It feels pretty light on the lips, almost like a chapstick.

This is a great shade for those of us with deeper skin tones and/or pigmented lips. I love that it shows up so well on my lips and is flattering on my skin tone (MAC NC40, for reference). This shade quickly became one of my favorites and I’m sure most of you will love it too! The only thing I dislike about this product is how much product is wasted when I sharpen it. I’m this close to saving all that gets stuck on the blades in a small container (O.K. may be not, but you feel my pain, right?). This pencil is too soft to package in a self-sharpening form, so this is a flaw I can deal with. I will most certainly be purchasing this shade again. I’m pretty sure I’ll run out of it soon, since I reach out for it so often nowadays and will want to get more for the fall which will be a perfect time to rock this shade.
