My Experience with NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint Broad Spectrum SPF 30:

The thick creamy skin tint comes in a matte black plastic tube packaging with a flip top opening. It does have a nasty sunscreen-type of smell which subsides usually, but I am not fan of such fragrances. Over all I find it pretty decent, user friendly and travel friendly, packaging-wise.

My shade, “Alaska light 2”, seems to be a close match of my pale/light skin tone; beauties with yellow-neutral undertones and every Asian/Indian beauty will find her perfect match in these shades. Talking about the formula & texture of this thick cream, it does not look like a skin tint as it is way thick and creamy unlike skin tints or tinted moisturizers.

It seems more like a BB cream with thick yet light-weight formula which takes time to get absorbed into the skin completely. It provides pretty good coverage considering it’s a skin tint; like, it blurs my acne and pores up to a good extent. Hence, it gets full points on coverage part. Now the issue is I have slightly uneven skin texture with pseudo mild patches (not even detected with touch or bare eyes) which I never knew existed on my skin before applying this skin tint. Oh yes, every time I apply this skin tint on my skin, it tends to cling on to those mild patches of my skin and highlights them.

And the more you try to blend, the more it highlights those dry areas as slightly cracked skin as if I am depriving my skin of natural hydration, which is not actually the case! I fear it might be tricky for ageing beauties as it is not going to forgive even minute flaws; I smile and I see number of cracked lines all over my face which are not visible usually! However I am surprised to see that it gives such a nice finish on my open large pores; it makes them almost invisible whether I use a primer or powder or not.

In fact it gives a slightly dewy finish on skin and not a completely matte finish, which is good for me as I think dewy makeup makes you look more charming and youthful. Anyway, using a powder over this skin tint is a big no-no for me because it already emphasizes my not-so-visible dry areas and using a powder on face can worsen the issues. Even I tried scrubbing my skin like anything and even moisturised it but still this tint clinged on to those patches.

I can apply it with a good fluffy brush, beauty blender and even with bare hands, and it will blend nicely with every tool. Still it always has to cling on to my minute, dry patches. Probably my retinol and AHA regimen is also to be blamed. But make sure you scrub your skin prior using this skin tint. The staying power of this skin tint is nearly 5-6 hours on my oily skin without any primer and face powder.

I feel that girls with soft oily skin might love it because I definitely like the way it melts on my skin, blurring my pores and redness on cheeks. But I definitely hate those unblended remnants of skin tint on my face over all. I don’t think it is going to help combination skin because that kind of skin will face the same issue with slightly dry areas. I might skip it because it does not give me a smooth finish; I will recommend it to girls with particularly even textured and soft skin.

Let’s sum up pros and cons:

Pros of NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint Broad Spectrum SPF 30:

• A lightweight, thick, creamy skin tint
• Blurs open pores and redness of cheeks
• Does not clog pores
• Is easily blendable on soft skin
• Gives a lovely dewy sheen to skin
• Gives shine free face for good 5-6 hours
• Does not dry out my skin
• Provides broad spectrum SPF 30 coverage
• Looks very natural in person and in pictures
• Quite travel friendly packaging

Cons of NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint Broad Spectrum SPF 30:

• Will definitely emphasize even mildest dry patches
• Does not provide a smooth, even finish to my oily skin
• Makes even mildly dry skin look cracked
• Pricey

I love everything about this skin tint except the uneven finish. Though I can make it work on my skin, but look at the price! However if I had to choose between Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Tinted Moisturizer and this skin tint, I would choose this skin tint for its shade range and finish.
