10 Natural Home Remedies to Treat Hyperpigmentation

Today, I’m going to share some easy remedies to treat hyperpigmentation right from the comfort of your home. Hyperpigmentation is a harmless condition which is mainly an increase in the natural colour of the skin. It can be caused by sun damage, inflammation, or other skin injuries, including acne. People with darker skin tones are more prone to hyperpigmentation, mainly due to excess sun exposure. Hyperpigmentation can be bothersome for a lot of us especially on the face and in some people, it can result in lower self-esteem or lack of confidence. Don’t worry, here are some easy fixes and 10 natural home remedies to treat hyperpigmentation that you can include in your daily routine to get rid of hyperpigmentation and dark spots.

Natural Home Remedies to Reduce Hyperpigmentation

1. Milk and Turmeric:

Raw milk, if used on pigmented skin can give you impressive results. To accelerate the results, add some turmeric which is not only a great antiseptic ingredient but, it also helps in treating pimples thus, by adding a healthy glow to your skin. Mix 2 tablespoons of raw (unboiled) milk with one teaspoon of turmeric. Mix them well. Use a cotton pad to massage this mixture on your problematic areas, wherever you have hyperpigmentation and dark spots. Massage it well and leave it on for 20 minutes and then wash off with cold water. Do this for at least twice a week.

2. Lemon Juice Mask:

This is one the best remedies, and I have tried this personally and can vouch for this on any given day. All you need to do is squeeze out some fresh lemon juice and with the help of a cotton pad, just dab it on areas where you have pigmentation issues. Leave it on for a good 10 minutes before you wash it off with cold water. While we all know the brightening properties of lemon juice in treating pigmented areas, I would also mention a caution for people with very sensitive skin or dry skin. If you feel lemon juice is too acidic for your skin or it irritates your sensitive skin, then mix equal parts of rose water in the lemon juice and you are good to go with this remedy.

3. Olive Oil and Warm Cloth:

Olive oil has great anti-inflammatory properties and therefore, it is an effective remedy for pigmented skin. Take some olive oil and massage it into your skin for about 2 minutes. Cover your face with a warm washcloth and let it stay until the cloth cools down. This will help all the steam from the washcloth to penetrate into your skin. Once done, remove the cloth and wipe off the excess oil from your face.

4. Facial Steaming:

This remedy should be used only once per week. Steaming can help you get rid of dead skin cells and also treats unclogged pores, thereby, resulting in the removal of dirt and grime. Boil some water in a pan, sit about 10 inches away from the pan and cover your head with a towel to let the maximum steam reach your face. Stay until you get all the steam out of the hot water and follow up by rinsing with cold water. This not only helps you in getting rid of all the dead skin but also adds an instant glow.

5. Cucumber Juice and Coconut Oil:

Extract some fresh cucumber juice and mix it with equal parts of coconut oil. Massage this mixture onto the pigmented areas for a few minutes and allow it for drying. Once dried, wash your face with cold water. You can replace the coconut oil with olive oil if you have extremely dry skin. Cucumber is great for pigmented skin and internal consumption of cucumber can also be equally beneficial.

6. Sandalwood + Vitamin E + Turmeric Face Mask:

Kareena Kapoor made this face mask famous recently. She was seen wearing this mask to clear her skin. Even though pure sandalwood powder is quite expensive, it’s worth the investment if you want to get rid of hyperpigmentation and blemishes. This wonder ingredient purifies blood from within and cures unevenness of skin tone and blemishes. It also calms inflammation and helps in clearing hyperpigmentation and marks. To make this mask, take 2 tbsp of sandalwood powder, 2 drops of vitamin E, and a pinch of turmeric. Add a bit of milk to make this into a paste form, apply and keep on the face and neck for 20 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water. Repeat this twice a week for best results.

7. Potato and Lemon Juice Pack:

Potato juice and lemon juice are two natural ingredients that can treat spots, blemishes, acne marks, and hyperpigmentation effectively. Shred one potato and add rice flour to it. Mix them together and keep the mixture aside for 10 minutes so that the two gets mixed completely. Add rose water to dampen the mixture and then apply it directly on your face. Let it dry and then wash off with normal water. If you keep doing this DIY at least 2-3 times a week then you will be able to see the difference in your black spots within a month.

8. Apple cider vinegar (ACV):

ACV has numerous beauty benefits but did you know it also helps you in refining your skin tone by treating pigmentation and dark spots? Yes, you are right! ACV’s natural toning action helps to even out skin tone and reduces dark spots caused by sun exposure and other factors. Its beta-carotene rich content also makes your skin radiant and brighter with regular use. Since ACV is acidic in nature, you have to dilute it with normal water before any usage. Take 1/2 tsp of ACV and dilute it with 1 tsp of ACV. Apply the diluted ACV solution on the blemishes and hyperpigmentation spots with a cotton pad just like you are using a toner. Keep it for some time and then rinse it off. Do this thrice a week.
