My Take on Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Triple-Action Toner:

I love a lot of Neutrogena products that are meant to heal and fight acne. Most of them have proven to be very effective. This is the only toner from the brand that I own and also the only product from the Oil-Free Acne Stress Control range.

I have been very particular about the use of toner on my skin for the last five to six years. I have to use it at least once everyday, right after washing my face. I make sure to moisturise my face immediately after using the toner. For a long time, I was devoted to The Body Shop Tea Tree Skin Clearing Toner. It still undoubtedly remains my HG skin toner. I continue to use it even now, but I added this Neutrogena toner to my skin-toning regime about six months ago. While I don’t use this one everyday, I use it often enough (three to four times a week).

I have dry skin that begins to get very uncomfortable right after I wash it. I have to literally run to my toner as soon as I wash my face, and then run to my moisturiser immediately after! A lot of people seem to think that toners are best used on oily skin, but I think differently. Firstly, dry skin can also be acne-prone and mine definitely is. After having used The Body Shop toner for several years and now after having added the Neutrogena one to my routine, I have seen a remarkable difference in my skin. None of these two toners dry my skin out. Speaking more specifically of the Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Triple-Action Toner, it does not increase the dryness of my skin nor does it irritate it. After I sweep it across my face using a cotton pad, my skin is significantly cleansed and soothed. Since I don’t have oily skin to begin with, there is no question of it eliminating oil on my skin (but I’m sure it does so otherwise).

It is a very gentle toner that I think you can use regardless of how oily or dry your skin is. It is not harsh in its effect. If I happen to have a bad phase of breakout or redness on my face, then I find that using this toner significantly calms and soothes my skin. It also sweeps away a significant amount of dirt and dead skin that cleansers usually miss out on.

Speaking of how effective in its action this toner in particular is, I think it is very hard to single out the result of any one specific product on the skin. At any given time, I use different cleansing products, scrubs, toners and moisturisers. Not only that, my diet and my sleep routine also varies from time to time. Therefore, it is always very hard to say what this toner in particular is achieving for my skin. However, if I were to look at the changes on my skin ever since I incorporated this toner into my routine, then I will say the following:

This toner claims to prevent acne. Now, this is something that no one will be able to testify to. I will never know whether or not the acne was about to emerge! However, I have seen about a 50% decline in my breakouts since I started using this toner. Then, again, I don’t use this toner on a daily basis and I have made some other dietary changes as well.

Apart from preventing acne, I have to say that it soothes the acne and reduces the redness on the skin. It cleanses the skin very well and paves the way for the moisturiser to be absorbed well.

Before I go on to the Pros and Cons list, let me quickly tell you a little about the product. The toner is a clear, very pale mint green coloured liquid. It has a mild, pleasant fragrance that seems to be a melange of cucumber and green tea. If used everyday, one bottle should last you up to six months.

Pros of Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Triple-Action Toner:

– Contains 2% Salicylic Acid: helps fight acne and soothes redness.

– The incidence of my breakouts does seem to have gone down after I started using this toner.

– Very gentle on the skin. Does not dry the skin. It is suitable for all skin types.

– It sweeps away dirt and dead skin with every use and leaves the skin feeling soft and soothed.

– It has a mild, pleasant cucumber-based fragrance.

Cons of Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Triple-Action Toner:

Like I mentioned, it is very difficult to single out the effects of any one product on the skin when you’re using so many at any given time. However, this toner has definitely not had any bad effect on my skin. It only seems to be doing well, in conjunction with my other anti-acne products.

Verdict on Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Triple-Action Toner:

This is a gentle, effective toner that reduces the incidence of acne and soothes redness without drying the skin out. It is suitable for all skin types.
