Hope all of you are in the pink of your health! We are experiencing full summers with occasional cloudy days which spark ideas for pool and beach activities. But, beach party also reminds us of red and blotchy tan as well as blemishes, especially on my sensitive skin! I know it’s crazy to walk outside when sun is at its full glory, but if you are also blessed with super active toddler who is no less than a jumping bunny, and when your neighbours on ground floor want to kick your family and you out for this, you too would rather get tanned! 😛
Moreover, my daughter is developing a strong interest towards water sports and I have no choice than to follow her spirits! Thanks to advancements in the beauty industry, we just need to change our skin care regimen accordingly and not our lifestyle! However, I am not completely satisfied with this particular Neutrogena sunscreen and my search for a decent sunscreen is still going on! Let’s read more about it!

Broad spectrum SPF 70
Lightweight & fast absorbing
Oil-free & PABA free
My Experience with Neutrogena Beach Defense Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 70:
The lotion comes in a sturdy & opaque plastic bottle packaging with flip top cap opening, much to my liking. I adore its neonish yellow packaging, and also find it very convenient for travelling purpose. It does have a slight synthetic smell which is fine for me and it’s not overpowering. Talking about this semi-liquid thick white lotion, I find it pretty lightweight and fast absorbing on my skin. Even sometimes I feel skeptical if it does anything to protect our skin since I am habitual of observing that sheer white cast on skin post using sunscreens while this Neutrogena sunscreen simply gets absorbed without making skin greasy or leaving any white cast.
But, it does provide sun protection even in peak sunlight from 2-5 pm, not completely though. I mean, I did find mild tanning on my skin even after using this sunscreen on my skin, but the level of burning and/or tanning is significantly lower than what it used to be before! Just keep in mind to slather it on half an hour before going outside and it will definitely take care of severe tanning other than preventing sunburn.
I tried and tested it in peak itchy sunshine of our West Coast beaches and also in chlorinated water and it gave me good results every single time. Though I am not expecting anything great from this sunscreen considering our daily encounter with sunshine! I feel little hesitant while using it on face as it gave me breakouts, though it works well for my little 3 year old. This sunscreen is safe enough to be used on kids over 3 years of age and I never find my daughter complaining of itchy or burning sensation after using this lotion on her body, though I don’t use it on her face after seeing what it did to my face.
I also observed that reapplying it every hour during beach visit really helps to prevent that itchy burning sensation and red patches which are likely to occur even after just two hours of sun exposure. Once we had spent the entire day at the beach and by evening, my skin looked no less than a grilled chicken with all those red bruises itching like hell; thankfully, history was not repeated this time!
I do spend every 4-6 hours in daylight everyday sometimes in chlorinated water while other time basking in scorching sunshine and I didn’t find any significant pigmentation on my skin, just a little skin tanning. But, it is pretty fine and subsides once I take a break. Even I find it effective on my daughter’s skin, she never refuses to come back from water before 3 hours and she did not suffer any major red burns or tanning at all, but she too has become a bit darker.
This pretty much makes it a keeper for everyone stepping out in the sun; it will definitely help to prevent severe burns, but don’t expect it to prevent skin tanning completely. May be limiting hours of sun exposure might help with it, but in our case it does not help our skin when exposed to sun for long hours. I would definitely recommend this product to everyone, though personally I am still searching for a decent sunscreen to take care of tanning.
Let’s sum up pros and cons:
Pros of Neutrogena Beach Defense Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 70:
• A lightweight, fast absorbing formula which works for even oily skin
• Does not leave any whitish cast or greasy residue behind
• Effectively protects our skin from sun light for decent hours
• Works fairly well around chlorinated/bleached water for good 40-50 minutes, but need to keep layering it
• Safe enough to be used on kids over 3 years
• Has prevented sunburn even when we have been out in the sun for hours, which is impressive
• Can be used under any dress since it hardly leave any cast on our skin
• Quite hygienic, travel friendly packaging
Cons of Neutrogena Beach Defense Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 70:
• Its chemical composition makes me hesitant to use it on my kid
• Does not prevent skin from getting tanned even after reapplication
• Did break me out on face
• Its alcohol content might bother sensitive skin
Well, I understand that nothing can really prevent skin tanning, hence no complaints since it atleast prevents my skin from burning under the sun. However, I am still searching for a good alternative for our daughter that has lesser chemicals and works good too. Nevertheless, this one is certainly good for scorching summers and/or winters provided we limit our outdoor activity.

Has any other Neutrogena products given your breakouts ever? I mostly refrain from Neutrogena, but all of its skin care products except sunscreens give me breakouts, which is strange. I love going to the beaches, and don’t mind getting tanned occasionally. Even lotus’ spf 70 one protects skin tanning better than this one, it seems.
Yeah usually Neutrogena pdts work average for me and I did get break outs in past from their antiageinh range but Neutrogena naturals skin care worked really well on my skin to my surprise.
ShIkha the tanning which we get here is completely diff than I used to feel or notice in India. Its a blessing that India weather n sunshine doesn’t cause that severe consequences unless we spend consecutive weeks in sun light but u will easily burn like coal even after spending 3 hrs here. So almost all Indian brands fail to give satisfactory results coz we r not experiencing it in India.
shikha this actually works great for everyday usage especially for people like me who have no choice but to stand in sun everyday know! plus it is a blessing that india weather is not that harsh that we suffer severe bruises from direct sunlight while if you even stand for an hour in sun in US you will get severe red rashes which will take almost a week to fade completely so you can well imagine hw it will treat our skin which is exposed to sunlight daily and not occassionally ??
In that case this neutrogena is completely safe bet that it atleast saves skin from damages though getting tan is easy bet.
and u r right mostly neutrogena pdts are either hit or miss, for me their neutrogena naturals range works really well but only the neutrogena naturals range is bliss for my skin rest all range are miss for me too!!
My daughter is super sporty too Neetu! 🙂
Haha that’s a blessing with torture naa neha 🙂 especially wen we wanna sleep n kids r sporty 🙁 :p
