Nexxus Pro Mend Heat Protection Styling Spray Review

Hey Guys,

I am addicted to straightening my hair with a flat iron and although I am quite aware of the damage the hot tool does to my strands, I just can’t give it up. Over the years, I have tried a number of different hair irons and products that maximize their performance while mitigating the damage caused by them. I am always on the hunt for the best products to minimize damage to my hair and today I will review Nexxus’ Protectant, a heat protection spray I have used for the past few months.

Product Background and Description:

Nexxus is one of America’s leading salon hair care brands. It was founded over 30 years ago, in 1979, by father-son duo Jheri and Stephen Redding (who also created the brand Redken in 1960).  Jheri Redding, a hairdresser and chemist, is often credited with being the founder of the modern conditioner.  Today, the company operates under a different owner and the Nexxus brand has grown to be synonymous with salon quality hair care.

Nexxus ProMend Styling spray promises to “protect hair from the drying, damaging effects of styling appliances for
lustrous, healthy-looking hair” Nexxus ProMend Styling Spray “is an alcohol-free spray that acts as a barrier to prevent breakage for a smooth, frizz-free style.” The product comes packaged in a durable plastic spray bottle, with the Nexxus logo prominently featured on it.

My Experience with Nexxus Pro Mend Heat Protection Styling Spray:

As I mentioned earlier, I am always on the lookout for products that will protect my hair when I use heat to style it and make my hair look better. I use this spray, primarily as a heat protectant, whenever I straighten my hair with a flat iron. The product offers protection for hair up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit (healthy hair burns at 451 Fahrenheit).  I usually straighten my hair at 350 when I have more time and at 410 when I’m in a hurry, so this product works for both settings. I spray the product on dry hair and then run the iron through different sections of my hair. The spray smells really good and though the smell overpowers the fragrance of my shampoo, I quite like it. This product turns into steam when I iron my hair. This initially scared me because I thought my hair is burning, but because I never smell burning hair, I know it’s not damaged.

Perhaps because of the moisture this adds to my hair, I feel like it’s easier to straighten my hair when I use this spray. The spray untangles the ends and it’s easier for me to run my iron over the entire length of my hair without any tugging. The spray significantly cuts down the time I spend straightening my hair too. When I am done, this styling spray leaves me with soft, smooth and shiny hair. It’s really easy for me to run my hands through my hair when I use this. Unlike other heat protectant sprays, this doesn’t contain alcohol, so I’m not left with crunchy hair when I use it.

A downside of this product is that while it provides great immediate results for me, over time I don’t think it’s done much to protect damage. I think this will work best for people who already have a lot of damage from heat and coloring as it really tames dry, damaged hair and frizz, but as far as it’s protective properties are concerned, my hair still splits and the ends are a lot less healthy and a lot drier than my roots. I think overall it’s an excellent styling spray, but a mediocre heat protectant.

  1. Devie, I love to style my hair using Philips straightener, though i am scared about its long term effects, I can’t stop using it…..:P Using the wella protectant now, will review it soon 🙂

    1. @ Jo — I swear it never fails to shock me! But after two seconds of sniffing for any burning smells, I go on with my ironing session 😛

@ Nia — does it work well as a heat protectant for you? I feel that long term, nothing really helps to totally and completely guard my hair from the heat 🙁
