I am an eye makeup lover. If it is time for makeup, then eyes is something that can never be left undone for me. So, I keep hoarding eye makeup all the time. For eyeliners, I always prefer liquid ones. I need precise lines and the finish that I get with liquid eyeliners, I fail to achieve with pencil ones, but I don’t lose hope and keep trying new pencils all the time. Today’s review will be on an eye pencil from NYX in the shade “Charcoal.”
Slim trim but never prim. Our Slim Eye Pencils come in a variety of entrancing shades—from seafoam green to black glitter. The creamy long-wearing eye liner formula goes on easily and resists bleeding. Available in 31 stunning shades!
My Experience with NYX Charcoal Slim Eye Pencil:
Packaging: NYX being a very economical brand, does not put more emphasis on classy packaging. The slim eye pencil is a very normal black pencil whose bottom is color coded to match the shade. Hence it becomes easy to identify from the stash. All the details with regard to the shade name, number and ingredients are written on the pencil. The pencil generally comes packed in a plastic wrapper.
Shade: They have around 31 shades in this range from greens to blues to black and greys. “Charcoal” is a very pretty grey shade. The pencil has no shimmers at all. Charcoal is a matte shade. I find it a tricky shade as it can totally wash out your face and make your eyes look droopy and sad. In my pictures below, I have it on my eyelids first and I looked sick and my eyes looked droopy. Then, I added black kajal on my waterline and my eyes looked a bit sharp.
Texture and Pigmentation: Charcoal has a good strong tip, one which would not break easily. Now, the texture of the pencil is not very creamy. For me, at least, I prefer that when I am using any eye pencil on my lids, I want it to be creamy so that it does not tug or pull the sensitive skin of eyelids. The skin close to eyelashes on the eyelid is very delicate and if the tip is hard, then it really hurts. With “Charcoal,” I feel it is soft but not soft enough. So, I have to use it multiple times carefully to get good flicks. It does tug at places on the eyelids. As I have mentioned previously, the tip is strong and hence when you swatch it on hands, you can apply pressure and the pigmentation is also good. You can see in the swatches that it looks darker on the hand than on the eyelids. When you apply on eyelids, you cannot apply too much pressure and hence it actually looks grey. I wish it was more creamy and would glide on easily.
Staying Power: NYX claims it to be long wearing and I had it on my lids for the entire day when I was in office and it stayed put. Now, it is not waterproof or smudge proof and if you rub your eyes, it will spread everywhere. But since I didn’t do any of it, it stayed on my lids. But by the end of the day, it loses the pop or freshness and looks dull. Also, since I didn’t apply a primer beneath, it started looking a bit oily by the end of the day.
Now they have written on the pencil that it is an eye and eyebrow pencil and I know shades like grey, brown and black can be used to fill eyebrows, but not sure how greens and blues and violets could be used for eyebrows! Also, I tried this pencil on waterline but it just does not show up.

Would I Recommend/Repurchase NYX Charcoal Slim Eye Pencil?
Well, I would not say that I love this eye pencil, but it’s not bad either. There are better products from NYX and also better eye pencils from other brands to try. I would not repurchase or recommend it.
