NYX Hollywood and Wine Ombre Lip Duo Review

I have been waiting to do this review since ages, at least for the last 10 days! But something or the other keeps cropping up. I saw this new product online and thought of giving it a try. First use and I formed pretty definitive views about it. The more I tried it, the more the view got strengthened. So, is it a yay or nay? Let us find out:

Packaging:
The ombre duo lipstick comes in a twist up stick form with the dark “Wine” shade as a thinner lip pencil and the “Hollywood” shade as a thicker chubbier stick form. The tube comes packaged in an outer cardboard box which has a sticker seal. Not quite tamper proof but I still appreciate the thought which went into it.

My Experience with NYX Hollywood and Wine Ombre Lip Duo:

Color: There seemed to be a decent variety of colour options. I was naturally drawn to this shade because of a number of reasons – The Wine shade seemed like a lovely deep slightly plummy purple and I still seem to be stuck in my purple zone – so. The other side is a bright fuchsia, so it definitely seemed like a great contrast to work with. Third – the name “Wine” – Enough said!!

I picked up a couple of shades and I do feel that this particular variant provides the most contrast. The deep purple contrast nicely with the bright fuchsia. I kind of love the combo. In effect, you do get 2 shades to play with – which are distinctly different and yet work well together. So, if you want to use them individually, that too is an option.

Texture: The texture is quite nice light and creamy – goes on easily. It does not tug or pull on the lips and applies evenly. Post application, it sets into a semi-matte finish, which is not at all drying.

I think texture is key to a product like this. You want the product to be creamy enough to be able to blend two shades together. And yet, you wouldn’t want it to be so creamy that it transfers too easily and the two shades mesh more than you want them to mesh. I feel that the product delivers excellently on this front. You see a lot of pics online with multi-toned glossy lips. While these seem fab in pics – and are extremely creative, these aren’t really practical everyday options. You use two glossy lipsticks together – all that will happen is that the colours will mesh together within minutes and all shade gradient will be lost instantly. So, you do need a more matte texture if you want to do multi-toned lips and actually wear that through the day or even for a couple of hours.

One last point on texture – the lip pencil side – which has the darker shade – has the same texture as the more chubby lipstick. While this is not an issue for the purpose of the product. However, if you are buying it from the perspective to have a lip liner – it might not work as well. Yes, it will line the lips, give definition – but being creamy, it will not give as much longevity as a lip liner is required to do. Also, it is easy to break. So, you have to be careful with the liner.

Pigmentation: Pigmentation is excellent. It goes on evenly and covers all lip pigmentation well. The burst of colour is bang on – super pigmented and opaque. The pigment does not sink into the fine lines of the lips.

Lasting Power:  Even though it applies creamy, it quickly sets into a comfortable matte finish. This gives the lipstick excellent longevity. It lasts almost the whole day and does not transfer much – unless you have subjected your lips to an oily meal during the course of the day. So, you do get good 7-8 hours wear.

To sum this up for you:

Pros of NYX Hollywood and Wine Ombre Lip Duo:

  • Two hot shades – which are distinct and yet work well together.
  • Two shades in one product.
  • Lightweight creamy texture.
  • Excellent pigmentation – opaque in a single swipe.
  • Comfortable matte finish.
  • Easy to work with from the tube.
  • The lipsticks applies smoothly – no tug or pull.
  • Does not settle into the fine lines of the lips.
  • No feathering or bleeding.
  • Neat packaging with colour-coded sides.

Cons of NYX Hollywood and Wine Ombre Lip Duo:

  • Since the texture of the lip liner is as soft and creamy as the chubby stick side, you have to be a bit careful that it doesn’t break while applying or if it falls.
  • The price!! I don’t generally comment on the price because the product should stand on its own merit – irrespective of the price. However, feel a bit appalled at the product’s price in US vis-a-vis in India.

IMBB Rating:
A 4.5/5 product.

I love this product and really enjoy this shade. I look forward to experimenting with these colors. I guess I have reached a point when my collection has pretty much every colour under the sun. So, I am not actively on the lookout to add to the collection and it does get a bit boring. I feel, this product really added to my excitement coz there were so many different ways to use it and it is fairly simple and easy to do so. So the packaging, the texture and the colour selection – it has all come together to create an excellent product. I am totally enjoying it and will whole heartedly recommend.
