My makeup routine on weekdays includes mostly just the basics. Hence I usually do not apply makeup-setting spray regularly. But when there are special occasions where I do wear heavy makeup, setting spray is always helpful as it is basically designed to help makeup last longer.I had earlier used MAC’s Fix + and Urban Decay’s All Nighter with the former being my favorite. So when I was looking to try another brand,I picked it up from NYX as I have always liked their Jumbo eye pencils.
It is packaged in a black plastic bottle with spritzer. The setting-spray liquid is completely colorless but has a strong odor due to alcohol content. The spritzer works well but sometimes the liquid comes out as big droplets. NYX also offers additional version of setting spray as dewy finish. The spritzer is provided with a plastic cover top for protection.
2 oz.(60 ml) tube is priced at $8
My experience with NYX Matte Finish Setting Spray:
I usually use the setting spray when I have done heavier makeup and I want it to last without requiring any touch-ups. After applying my makeup, I use the setting spray by keep a distance of suggested 6 inches from the face and spray. It takes 3- 4 spritz to cover my forehead, cheeks and jaw. Usually, the spritz works okay and I have a mist fall on my face. But sometimes I also face the issue of droplets of liquid come out from the spritzer, which makes it inconvenient.
This setting spray is especially designed for oily skin. Even though I have a dry skin typ,e I picked up this setting spray as I do not like a dewy or oily look. Maintaining a matte effect on my skin is much more preferred. Even though the mist is liquid as soon as it falls on my face, the mist immediately evaporates without smudging my makeup.
One of my major concerns of using any setting spray was that it should not spoil my makeup. The setting spray forms a protective film on the makeup to prevent it from getting ruined. I did find that the setting spray did not hamper waterproof or regular makeup.
I did not find that the setting spray actually helped the makeup last long. Even when I have the NYX setting spray my makeup would last for 4 -5 hours max. So it did not make much difference whether I had the setting spray or not on my makeup. I even tried it few times during the day when I had foundation, compact ,eye-shadow,eyeliner and lip-gloss. After 5 hours my foundation was fading even with the setting spray.
The setting spray does give a matte effect on the skin, which I like. But the problem is,it makes my skin drier because of the alcohol content. The setting spray is good to use for everyday wear as well. The setting spray has a very strong chemical odor and it is inconvenient for some time.
Pros of NYX Matte Finish Setting Spray:
• Helps to provide a matte effect on the makeup.
• 3- 4 spritz of the mist is enough to cover forehead, cheeks and jaw.
• It forms a protective film on the makeup.
• It is especially designed for oily skin.
• The mist of setting spray does not smudge makeup.
• Useful for waterproof or mineral based makeup on skin.
• Decently priced.
Cons of NYX Matte Finish Setting Spray:
• Sometimes instead of mist, there are droplets of liquid coming out from the spritzer, which makes it inconvenient.
• The setting spray did not help in keeping the makeup last longer than 4-5 hours.
• Makes skin drier because of the alcohol content.
• The setting spray has a very strong chemical odor, which is inconvenient.
3 out of 5.
Would I buy NYX Matte Finish Setting Spray again?
No, not buying this product as it has not been very useful.Do you have any recommendation for any another brand of setting spray I could try? I am thinking of instead having a good primer to avoid using the setting spray altogether.

sounds average! 🙁
You are right Neha….. I might just not pick up any setting spray any more 🙁
Droplets instead of spritz sounds scary for a setting spray!
True Shikha….So scared of it running the makeup :/
Whats the point of such a spray when it lasts for only 2-3 hrs
My thoughts exactly Garima :p
Alaka, did you try the urban decay night setting spray or the MAC one?
Yes Jomol …I have tried both and I like the MAC Fix+ the most !
