My Experience with NYX Matte Lipstick in Merlot:
This is the second NYX matte lipstick I bought, along with Bloody Mary. This is another red and at first glance, it doesn’t appear to be too different from Bloody Mary, but this is a deeper and less “loud” red, perhaps. I would describe the colour as a rich and deep berry red. The colour complements warm Indian skin tones very well.
It’s perhaps not a classic red lipstick like MAC’s Ruby Woo or Russian Red, but if you are looking for a red that’s creamy, matte and pigmented, without being over the top, then this is a good pick.
I love the formula of the lipstick. It is superbly creamy without being too soft or fragile, if you know what I mean. It sets to a beautiful creamy matte finish with no gloss/shine whatsoever. It is very, very comfortable to wear. It is a non-drying matte that glides on to the lips. Even when I apply it on my lips directly from the tube, it doesn’t drag. It delivers colour evenly.
It is ultra-pigmented and lasts long enough. It has no fragrance. It is easy to remove, doesn’t transfer too much, doesn’t bleed, doesn’t settle in the lines at all, doesn’t feather and doesn’t stain.
Since it’s such a rich and pigmented colour with a creamy finish, it is best applied with a lip brush and worn with a lip liner.
As far as the packaging is concerned, it’s nice that one gets a peek of the colour through the tube, but the swivel part of the lipstick is quite loose and this goes for all lipsticks in the range, not just my particular lipstick. The lipstick swivels up quite easily and that’s not very good. It feels uncomfortable because I fear that the lipstick will hit the cap and smudge or break, but that hasn’t happened yet, so it’s likely that it’s just my paranoia!
Pros of NYX Matte Lipstick in Merlot:
- Beautiful red lipstick, it is a deep berry red.
- Very creamy formula.
- Flawless matte finish.
- Comfortable to wear, non-drying, no dragging.
- Very pigmented.
- No fragrance.
- Partially see-through tube.
- Great price.
Cons of NYX Matte Lipstick in Merlot:
- Somewhat iffy packaging.
- It’s easy to go wrong with the tube if you skip the lip brush.
Verdict on NYX Matte Lipstick in Merlot:
For the price, I think this is a great lipstick and it’s a beautiful deep red to own. The colour is a rich one and yet it is strikingly beautiful. It is not an over-the-top red. The formula is creamy. This non-drying, comfortable matte lipstick is one of the few great ones even for dry lips!
