Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Strumpet Review

Hey guys!

Today, I am going to review Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics’ (OCC) lip tar in Strumpet. It’s an interesting concept – liquid lipstick in a plastic tube that comes with a tiny brush, with an interesting name to match. Let’s see if it’s more than just a gimmick!

Product Description:

According to Sephora’s website, “flash a fabulous smile and a stunning splash of color with this lip formula that combines the longevity of a lipstick with the breezy application of a gloss. The rich pigment will drench your pout and the blend of essential oils, including hemp and peppermint, will soothe and soften the skin for a supremely comfortable finish.  Also, “for easy travel and application, each Lip Tar comes with a vinyl carrying case and mini lip brush.”  The shade “Strumpet” is described as a seedless grape red.

My Experience with Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Strumpet:

So, I first heard about this product when I started looking for paraben-free lipsticks a while back. However, something always held me back from purchasing it. I think it was just the fact that I had never used lipstick packaged this way. When I spotted this product on the IMBB Sponsored list, I felt like this was a great opportunity to try it out. I knew what color I’d want to try; I had my eye on “Strumpet” for a while. The shade is described as a seedless grape red, but on me, it looks more like a fuchsia/deep berry color. The finish is matte, but it still has a little bit of sheen to it, which I’m guessing is because of the oils it contains. It also has a pleasant peppermint oil smell, that doesn’t last too long.

The best thing about this product is that it’s very deeply pigmented and just a tiny amount gives opaque coverage to the lips. I am actually always surprised by how little product I need and almost always end up dispensing too much. For people with pigmented lips who have trouble finding lip products that show up well, this is a great choice. Even though this color is on the darker end of the spectrum of what they have to offer, from what I have tested at the store the lighter ones, too, go on very opaque. The shade Strumpet is absolutely flattering on my tan/NC40 skin tone. I receive so many compliments when I wear this (needless to say I’ll be repurchasing :P) I like to wear it at night, because it is very bright, but sometimes when I feel a little daring, I wear it in the day with very light eye makeup.

Another major plus is its lasting power. This product stays on my lips until I take it off with some oil or my cleanser. Once I apply this, I have to wait for about a minute for it to set and dry. After that, anything I put to my lips – food, drink, paper napkins – this stays and stays through them all.

The lip color, or “tar,” comes in a plastic pouch with a tiny brush. I actually end up applying the product by putting the tube directly on my lips, even though application is much better with the brush. The thing the brush is really good for is getting the color on the peak of the lips, to make them look more defined. However, carrying the brush around is hard as the color gets all over the plastic case! I think I would prefer this as it came packaged like the Stila Liquid lipsticks, in a long tube with an applicator. It would make applying this a lot easier.

As you can see in the instructions photo, OCC suggests using their primer under this product. While this doesn’t need a primer to extend wear, it certainly needs to keep lips from drying out. After about an hour of wear, my lips feel parched if I don’t wear this with a chapstick. The color also begins to feather, which is a total nightmare! So, I tried priming my lips with some chapstick prior to putting this on and ended up looking like the joker! It bleeds everywhere. How the shade started to travel from my lips to the end of my chin and nose, I don’t know. But I did know that using chapstick under it wasn’t the solution. What works for me, instead, is using a chapstick over. The other day I saw neon Maybelline Baby Lips at the store that was a perfect match for this shade and since then I always wear that on top of the lip tar. It keeps my lips moisturized without affecting the lip tar’s awesome lasting power.

Overall, this is a great lip product that comes at a great price. You need such a tiny amount that I expect this to last me the year. An unexpected surprise was that this works wonderfully as a cheek stain (look at hand swatch). Blending it a little tricky, so is mastering how much to apply since the tiniest amount produces a deep stain. The shade Strumpet is equally gorgeous on the cheeks and lasts through the day. If you’re looking for a long lasting lip color and are ready to experiment with some quirky shades, you must check OCC’s lip tars out. I’ll definitely repurchase this shade and add some more to my collection!
