Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar Matte in Anime Review

Hello IMBBians,

I have a bunch of OCC Lip Tars, and this one in the shade Anime, is one that stands out the most because the color is so bright! These days, I’m sure hardly anyone needs an introduction to lip tars.  We have been bombarded with their images and high praise. After using these lip tars for over 4 months now, I thoroughly second any high praise you may read associated with these lip products. Let’s talk in more details about the shade Anime.

My Experience with Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics  Lip Tar Matte in Anime:

Packaging:  It comes in a squeeze tube. Upon unscrewing the white top, we see a nozzle that releases the product when the tube is squeezed. This nozzle sometimes dispenses more color than is required, this is not true with all lip tars but noticeable in more runnier formulas. I screw their tops in the same way which leads me to believe that even though two shades might be labelled “matte” and have the exact same ingredient composition, they do wary in thickness of the cream, which makes the runnier formulas more susceptible to leakage. I should mention that one should proceed with caution when squeezing the tube, as these are highly pigmented and you only need just a little amount of product for each use and once the product is out of the tube, it is impossible to put it back in. Every shade comes with a brush, the OCC Precision Lip Brush.

Color:  Anime is described as a “seriously neon pink.” And oh boy, they do mean it! You need to have a serious commitment to wearing a bold lip if you want to rock this shade. It is beautiful but very vibrant, as a neon shade is expected to be. With a light or almost no eye makeup, this shade looks very good. If the eye makeup is bright, then very easily the whole look might be over-the-top. The color is bright, it has been very aptly named – Anime, which means – a style of Japanese film and television animation, typically aimed at adults as well as children. This neon color does justice to this definition.

Texture:  It is a formula that is runnier than other matte shades I have used from OCC. I would describe it as a thick liquid not a cream. It can be tricky to control the amount of product that comes out of the nozzle because it is runny. Place a brush just next to the nozzle head so that all color that comes out can be picked up by the brush. Once it is taken on the brush and applied on the lips, it spread very easily, it is not very-quick drying, you do have a decent amount of time to satisfactorily distribute the color. The lip tar has peppermint oil in it, so it tingles just a teeny bit, nothing overly noticeable though. It is a matte shade upon drying; meaning, during application, it looks glossy, but within a few minutes, it starts to dry and then stays matte for the whole duration of wear. And once it dries, it stays put, the runny formula doesn’t affect the wear. It is a comfortable matte shade i.e. it doesn’t feel too drying but after 3-4 hours, it starts to feel drier, but a simple lip balm application makes it comfortable again. It is matte, but it is not flat, as in, it does not have a powder matte finish, but has a well moisturised matte look.

Fragrance: The primary fragrance that hits us is of peppermint, but it is very subtle, not at all irritating to the senses. It does linger beyond the initial application, but eventually wears out after two hours or so.

Staying Power:  I was going through the official page where this shade can be bought from, it doesn’t specify a particular wear-time, but just says “unparalleled .. wear time.” In my experience, it lasts till you use a remover to get rid of the color, even if it is after 12 hours, it is very, very long wearing! It does start to fade first from the centre of the lips, especially when you eat and drink during the wear. But because it stains the lips, the fading is not unflattering.

Application:  You need the tiniest amount of this for complete, opaque coverage. It is important to use the tiniest amount not just because the product is pigmented but because if you use more than the required amount, it starts to bleed into the very fine lines around our lips. A liner is not needed, but for events and functions, I apply a liner anyway, so as to have the peace of mind that it won’t bleed. But I am yet to find a liner that is an exact match of this bright shade, I end up using the closest pink I have. Whatever amount you think you need, use half of that amount; after enough uses you get the hang of controlling the quantity, but initially, I suggest being very careful.

Pros of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics  Lip Tar Matte in Anime:

  • The color is a very striking bold neon pink – a delight for neon lovers.
  • The staying power is incredible, as advertised.
  • The texture, even for a matte is not super drying.
  • Comes with a brush, that is absolutely needed for precise application.
  • The pigmentation is a dream, even at $18, I feel it is a good investment for anyone as the color would last years and years with no end in sight.
  • If you have other lip tars, mixing shades to get new colours is very easy.

Cons of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics  Lip Tar Matte in Anime:

  • Reapplication can be tricky as it doesn’t come in typical packaging.
  • The color is a very bright neon, not for the faint of heart.
  • This particular lip tar is runnier compared to other matte ones I own, need to handle with care.
  • If a lot is used, it will start to bleed.
  • You would need to carry a lip balm with you especially if dry lips are a concern.
  • Because the shade is a true matte, proper priming of lips is needed before application (make sure lips are not chapped and are adequately moisturised).
  • Not available in India yet.

IMBB Rating:

4/5 – A deduction only because the nozzle-head-tube packaging makes reapplication tricky and runny formula asks for caution; otherwise the color is fantastic.

Would I Recommend/Repurchase Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics  Lip Tar Matte in Anime?

Even though I have a mini version, I know this shade is going to last a really long time, as it is so richly pigmented. Repurchasing is an issue that I do not think I will have to face any time soon. But as far as neons are concerned, this is the best shades of pink I have seen so far. I absolutely, highly recommend this “seriously neon” color to anyone who loves a bold bright pink lip. What a statement this shade makes!

I hope this helped and until next time – Happy Makeuping!
