Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar Stained Gloss – New Wave Review

I have proclaimed my love for Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics’ Lip Tars on IMBB, so you would think that I would hoard them, but I have refrained from getting more because there’s so much product in a single tube! When I was doing last-minute gift shopping for friends, I got an OCC Stained Gloss for the lippie-lover among them and took that as an excuse to purchase one for myself as well 😛

Obsessive Compulsive Lip Tar New Wave

Product Description (from the official website):

Lip Tar: Stained Gloss is OCC’s newest texture innovation for lips. Inspired by lighting gels and stained glass, Stained Gloss combines the colour saturation of Lip Tar with a casual glossy finish that’s ready-to-wear from its first slick application to the high impact stain it leaves behind.  Contains Organic Hemp Oil and Soy-Derived Vitamin E, for a finish that feels as good as it looks! Paraben-Free courtesy of refreshing Peppermint Oil, 100% Vegan and Gluten-Free.

This came in a cute little plastic zip-up pouch, with the lip brush that OCC includes with every Lip Tar. Initially, I thought I could use the pouch for the Lip Tar and brush, but it turned out to be too cumbersome. The tube is the standard squeeze-type with skinny nozzle.

Compared to the original, matte-like formula of Lip Tar, the Stained Gloss is sheerer, glossier, and not as intensely-pigmented. It’s a lot less intimidating, and is much easier to apply. It is so much more user-friendly than the Matte Lip Tar.  I can apply the Stained Gloss using just my finger, no need for a lip brush.

This shade, New Wave, is described by OCC as a “glassy neon pink” – that’s quite accurate.  New Wave looks like a very cool-toned neon pink to me. It is shimmer-free. The color is sheer, but buildable to about medium opacity, but to be honest, I’m not so fond of this shade. It’s a tad bright and cool-toned for my yellow (NC 30-35) skin. For this sheer, glossy type of finish, I would prefer a peach, coral, or a more neutral pink.

The texture of the OCC Stained Gloss is cushiony and smooth, with a little tackiness to it. It feels a bit like lip gloss, but is not as thin, runny, or wet. On the lips, it feels relatively lightweight (despite the said touch of tackiness). It has a mild peppermint scent.

The finish, on the lips, looks jelly-like to me — sheer, plush, and shiny. The shine subsides after about an hour, then it becomes more of a traditional lip stain. It stains the lips well and lasts for about six hours. It doesn’t fade patchy, unlike the way some lip stains stain – just the middle, inner part of the lips while the outer part turns bare, no – this fades evenly.

But I have a problem with this product. While I like its glossy finish and comfortable feel, it settles into my lip lines! And I have a lot of lines on my lips. That’s just how they are. And because the color is so bright, it tends to be quite obvious. The way for me to use this is by getting a small amount and patting (not swiping) it on my lips. It’s not too bad in person, but it looks much more obvious in macro shots like the one below.

Would I Repurchase Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar Stained Gloss – New Wave?

I don’t know yet. Maybe I’ll have better luck with other shades!

IMBB Rating:

3/5

It’s a nice lip gloss/lip stain hybrid because it’s smooth, lightweight, has sheer but buildable color, and has a decent lasting power. I would recommend it if you like bright-colored lip products that stain or have a shine to its finish, but if your lips have a lot of lines on them, like mine, it is necessary to try it in the store first!
