Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lovecraft Lip Tar Metallic Review

Hello IMBBians!

After yet another hiatus to study for my Law (LLB) exams I am back to the love of my life – Makeup! I own a dozen Lip Tars from OCC; most I absolutely love and enjoy but some I cannot justify buying at all. This shade Lovecraft is one of my least liked purchases ever. Let’s get right to the painful details.

My experience with Obsessive Compulsive Lovecraft Cosmetics Lip Tar Metallic

Packaging: As with any other Lip Tar by OCC, it comes in a squeeze tube. Upon unscrewing the white top, we see a nozzle that releases the product when the tube is squeezed. This nozzle sometimes dispenses more color than is required; this is not true with all lip tars but noticeable in runnier formulas. I screw-on their tops in the same way which leads me to believe that even though 2 shades might be labelled Metallic & have the exact same ingredient composition, they do vary in thickness of the cream, which makes the runnier formulas more susceptible to leakage. I should mention that one should proceed with caution when squeezing the tube, as these are highly pigmented and you only need just a little amount of product for each use & once the product is out of the tube, it is impossible to put it back in. Every shade comes with a brush, the OCC Precision Lip Brush.

Color: The website describes the color as Pink/Lilac metallic – pretty spot on description. It is a very light shade, which makes it unsuitable for the typical Indian skin tone. For my NC38 skin it looks ghastly pale. It is not just that the shade is too light but the silver sparkle it has makes it even lighter & gives a very harsh metallic reflection. I can never wear this color by itself. But if I dab it on the center of my lips lightly over another darker color then it looks wearable & adds a nice highlight to the lip.

Texture: The metallic particles in this color make the product a bit chunkier. Once it is taken on the brush & applied on the lips, this particular shade does not spread well, the texture gives a patchy look. It is not very-quick drying formula, you do have a decent amount of time to satisfactorily distribute the color but the color spreads very unevenly. As compared to others, I end up using more color to get an even look or the lip looks very patchy! The lip tar has peppermint oil in it, so it tingles just a teeny bit, nothing overly noticeable though. Once it dries, it stays put, but it feels very drying and grainy on the lips, you feel an immense urge to constantly apply lip balm over this to get rid of that graininess.

Fragrance: The primary fragrance that hits us is of peppermint, but it is very subtle not at all irritating to the senses. It does linger beyond the initial application but eventually wears out after 2 hours or so.

Staying Power: I have never wanted to wear this shade for any time longer than 5 minutes, because on its own I just can’t rock this shade. But for the sake of this review I did try to wear it all day. Unlike other lip tars, this fades away in a very uneven manner, the grainy texture reduces the wear time as compared to a matte lip tar. I would say it lasted for about 5 hours on me & then I had to absolutely apply another color over it to hide the shame!

Application: Place a brush just next to the nozzle head so that all color that comes out can be picked up by the brush. This particular shade requires more product than others, when spread across the lip the chunky shimmer in it gives a very uneven look, and to balance that out I keep reaching for more color. It is not a comfortable experience at all. The only way I like using it is taking a tiny amount on my finger and then just pressing it over the middle of my lips over a darker more matte color, as a highlight.

Cons of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lovecraft Lip Tar Metallic :

• Reapplication can be tricky as it doesn’t come in typical packaging.
• The shimmer in this makes the color look very grainy on the lips
• It feels just as uncomfortable as it looks
• The color is a very light, unflattering pink
• If a lot is used, it will start to bleed
• You would need to carry a lip balm with you especially if dry lips are a concern
• Not available in India, yet.

IMBB Rating:

1/5 – I only give it a point because it makes a good highlight; on its own, I personally cannot use this shade.

Do I recommend/Will I repurchase Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lovecraft Lip Tar Metallic ?

No, absolutely not! If you are very fair & are comfortable wearing light colors even then, I wouldn’t recommend it, as the texture is not comfortable and looks very unflattering. Even the moist-est of lips can look chapped due to its uneven metallic shimmer.

I hope this helped and until next time – Happy Makeuping!
