Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Psycho Matte Lip Tar Review

Hello IMBBians!

I hope you all had a very happy Holi! This bright festival of colors reminded me that I am yet to review one of the colored gems in my makeup kit. My obsession (sorry, for the bad pun!) with Obsessive Compulsions Cosmetics’ Lip Tars still pretty much exists and this post proves the same.

My Experience with Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Psycho Matte Lip Tar:

Packaging: This will seem very repetitive if you read other reviews about OCC Lip Tars, but like any other Tar, it comes in a squeeze tube. Upon unscrewing the white top, we see a nozzle that releases the product when the tube is squeezed. This nozzle sometimes dispenses more color than required. This is not true with all the lip tars, but only with more runny formulas.

I screw-on their tops in the same way which leads me to believe that even though 2 shades might be labelled Matte & have the exact same ingredient composition, they do vary in thickness of the cream, which makes the runnier formulas more susceptible to leakage. I should mention that one should proceed with caution when squeezing the tube, as these are highly pigmented and you only need just a little amount of product for each use & once the product is out of the tube, it is impossible to put it back in. Every shade comes with a brush called the OCC Precision Lip Brush.

Color: Much to my utter confusion, Psycho is described as a “True Blood Red”. After seeing its pictures online I have come to the conclusion that OCC have made a mistake on their official webpage, they must have meant to write “True blood Orange”. This is not a red, at all. It is a true bold orange with a reddish-ness to it. If you are even slightly averse to bold colors, I would advise you to stay away from this shade. It is BRIGHT! So much so that if the eye makeup is bright then very easily the whole look might become over-the-top.

Texture: Again, as said previously in my other lip tar posts – I would describe it as a thick liquid, not a cream. It can be tricky to control the amount of product that comes out of the nozzle because it is runny. Place a brush just next to the nozzle head or dip it in the head so that all color that remains on the brush. Once it is taken on the brush & applied on the lips it spread very easily, it is not very-quick drying, you do have a decent amount of time to satisfactorily distribute the color. The lip tar has peppermint oil in it, so it tingles just a teeny bit, nothing overly noticeable, though.

It is a matte shade upon drying; meaning, during application it looks glossy, but within a few minutes it starts to dry & then stays matte for the whole duration of wear. And, once it dries it stays put. The runny formula doesn’t affect the wear. It is a comfortable matte shade i.e. it doesn’t feel too drying, but after 3-4 hours it starts to feel dry. But, a simple lip balm application makes it comfortable again. It is a matte, but it is not flat, as in, it does not have a powder matte finish, but has a well moisturised matte look.

Fragrance: The primary fragrance that hits us is of peppermint, but it is very subtle, not at all irritating to the senses. It does linger beyond the initial application, but eventually wears out after 2 hours or so.

Staying Power: I was going through the official page where this shade can be bought from, it doesn’t specify a particular wear-time, but just says “unparalleled… wear time”. In my experience, it lasts till you use a remover to get rid of the color, even if it is after 12 hours. It is very, very long wearing! It starts to fade first from the centre of the lips, especially when you eat & drink during the wear. But, because it stains the lips, the fading is not unflattering.

Application: You need the tiniest amount of this for complete, opaque coverage. It is important to use the tiniest amount not just because the product is pigmented, but because if you use more than the required amount it starts to bleed into the very fine lines around our lips. A liner is not needed, but for events & functions I apply a liner anyway; to have a peace of mind that it won’t bleed. Whatever amount you think you need, use half of that amount; after enough uses you get the hang of controlling the quantity, but initially, I suggest being very careful.

Pros of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Psycho Matte Lip Tar:

• The color is a very striking, bold warm orange.
• The staying power is incredible, as advertised.
• The texture, even for a matte is not super-drying.
• Comes with a brush, that is absolutely needed for precise application.
• The pigmentation is a dream, even at $18 I feel it is a good investment for anyone as the color would last years.
• If you have other lip tars, mixing shades to get new colours is very easy.

Cons of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Psycho Matte Lip Tar:

• Reapplication can be tricky as it doesn’t come in typical packaging.
• The color is a very bright orange.
• This particular lip-tar is runnier compared to other matte ones I own.
• Needs to be handled with care because if a lot is used, it will start to bleed.
• You would need to carry a lip balm with you, especially if dry lips are a concern.
• Because the shade is a true-matte, proper priming of lips is needed before application (make sure lips are not chapped & are adequately moisturised).
• Not available in India, yet.

IMBB Rating:

4/5

Deduction only because the packaging makes reapplication tricky & runny formula asks for caution; otherwise, the color is fantastic.

Would I Repurchase/Recommend Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Psycho Matte Lip Tar?

I highly recommend this color to anyone who loves bold orange lips. It is putting on a statement piece. This can be your only one accessory that you need to complete the outfit. I may not need to repurchase this particular shade anytime soon as this one is going to last me ages, but I do want to buy many other lip tars! I am a huge fan of them!!

I hope this helped and until next time – Happy Makeuping! 😀
