Office / Formal wears for women in contemporary times
Gone are the days, when women wore saris and salwar kameez to office. No doubt, we as Indian Women still love being in that skin. But when it comes to the latest trends with the formal wear there’s a huge -huge evolution from it was a few years back and what it is now. As soon as I say, dressing for office, I am sure all of you must have had a vision of yourself wearing boring and monotonous stuff which are miles away from the trend and fashion world And thumbs up to those women who are on the other side.
First and fore mostly you need to keep yourself updated with the current trend which is not so tough with the television, magazines and internet always ready to help us. And it won’t be tough for ladies and girls who watched Rishta.com- season 1. I simply loved the way Shruti Seth dressed in it. Perfect is the word. High-waist skirts, cup sleeved shirts, waist coats, stilettos and the right jewelry. Please check out Kavi Shastri too. Ahh, I love him. Ok getting back to the post.
Some prefer simple and some prefer a bit trendy styles whilst wearing formal clothes. By simple I refer to long kurtis teamed with jeans and some light jewelry, and trendy formal wear refers to high waist skirts, or short dresses with stilettos. Mini skirts, plunging necklines, halters, skin, baring tops, tight clothes, sweats , shorts these are the inappropriate clothing for office wear.(That about narrows down the wearable ones)
Women’s office wear has come a long way! What from wearing just one style of skirt and business suit we have a wide range of cuts available. Even if your office has casual policy it is better to go with your classic dress or look to immediate female boss and observe how she dresses!
The shirts are very “in” for the formal wear. Satin shirts, cotton shirts, silk shirts teamed with jeans or trousers are simply stylish. The satin and silk blouses also look great with skirts. Color plays a major role at office. Most workplaces favor white, ivory, black (you can never go wrong with that), brown and blue. You try different combinations and arrive at something suitable. Or you can go for a shade like olive if you can carry it off. And if you like the suits go for balanced and neutral shades like blacks, greys and mud shades, these shades look elegant and professional at the same time. On the other hand you can experiment with the jackets you wear. Priety Zinta at the IPL bidding looks totally ravishing with her suits and dresses.
Not just plain pleated shirts are the formal style, but the V-neck, round style, buttoned shirts and plain t-shirts also look great. All these can be teamed with trousers and skirts.Well when I say skirts, do not open those eyes so wide. You can pick skirts which you are comfortable in. The length, garment and the style all depend on your body type. Slim ladies can go for the high-waist skirts and ladies who are on the heavier side can opt for the normal waist skirts. I surely do not mean that you should wear ultra mini skirts to distract your co-workers. 😛
Women should dress in such a manner so that they appear serious and competent to the men, and also so that they don’t offend other women. Now talk about a rock and a hard place!!
Women in finance, law are expected to dress more conservatively than those in jobs like advertising, media related jobs. According to researchers dress play a very important role in how you are perceived. When people look at you, the way you dress thy draw certain impressions Remember first impression last a long time!
Go for subtle make up in work place because you want to be taken seriously, that doesn’t mean you have to have thick bottleneck glasses, brown clothes & have a unkempt look!! Just groom carefully.
Now comes the jewelry, we are of course not wearing chunks of gold to the office. Do not wear something which is heavy, (remember you have to bear from 9 to 5), avoid jewelry which makes noise and distracts others. Wear minimal jewelry, but make sure whatever you wear doesn’t hamper your work in any manner. Wear a simple pedant or brooch if you want flair but avoid any “bling” ones. Wear just a simple pair of earrings and one ring. Wear pearls, or simple sophisticated jewelry. The bags need not be careful and gaudy. You can stick to traditional leather handbags or something subtle and classy.
Most important of all, make sure you look neat and clean. Do not wear lose baggy clothes. Although they give you the freedom to be comfortable, remember you are going to a place where you have to face people and you certainly won’t want them to laugh at you. You cannot afford a “oh-so chic” look at office, and do not be ultra-colorful no matter what.
Use very classy and minimal perfect make up. Avoid florescent shades. Always match your shoes and bag, do not pair stripes with plaids and do not OVER DO anything.
