Skin Care for Oily Skin

oily skin careMasks are a great way to help remove excess oil from the skin. With an oily skin type, clay masks are best recommended for it won’t over dry your skin. You can make your own clay mask, but may be a bit messy, so probably be best to leave it with a beautician. More natural products to use for a mask, is oatmeal, banana, cucumber, strawberry and yoghurt. Also to help get those extra benefits out of your mask, add some essential oils that are recommended for oily skin. Such as, Bergamot, Sage, Lemon, Juniper, Cedarwood, Frankincense, Cypress and Lavender. A faster and more effective way to use these oils is by making your own facial steamer and adding these oils to the water, all you need is a bowl big enough so your face will fit over, add your selected oil to the boiling water and place your face hovering over the bowl with a towel draped over your head. It’s the best at home steamer you can get!

Homemade Honey & Oatmeal Maskoatmeal mask

Ingredients:
½ cup fast cooking oatmeal
¼ cup honey
½ cup water

Directions:
Mix together the oatmeal and water in small bowl, and cook (or microwave, according to instructions).  Let the oatmeal cool about 5-7 minutes, then add ¼ honey.  Mix well into a paste.  Apply this ‘mask’ to cleansed skin, and let dry.  Place two cooled tea bags over your eyes for an even more soothing experience!  You’ll want to wash this mask off after about 15 minutes

Honey is a natural astringent which helps tighten the skin, while oatmeal is a great oil absorber and leaves your skin feeling soft and smooth. This mask is defiantly a winner for oily skin types.

A basic law of beauty is that everyone, no matter what skin type, should moisturize. Even if your skin is oily, it will benefit from moisturizers. Why? Moisturizers seal moisture into skin to help keep it moist and supple. Your skin will tell how often you need to moisturise, usually twice a day. When your skin is tight, it’s crying out for moisture. Be careful not to over moisturize for this can clog pores and make your oily skin more greasy. The best recommended moisturizer to use on an oily skin type is an oil-free, light weight formula. Consider using herbal or even natural moisturizers, and steer clear from thick creamy moisturizers and head towards a gel or lotion base.. I find the best option when it comes to moisturisers is have a day one and a night one. When applying a day moisturiser make sure it has some UV protection agent added to it, as we all know the sun has some of the most damaging effects on our skin. It increases aging, sun-burn and even skin cancers. And as for night moisturisers they usually come with special added properties that rejuvenate your skin while you are sleeping! Great!

Twice A Day Routine

1 Cleanse
2 Exfoliate / Face Mask (This should only be done twice a week)
3 Tone
4 Moisturize

Makeup

The search for makeup with oily skin can be long and tedious, but don’t give up. Best advice for makeup is to steer clear from oil-based makeup as it tends to leave an inevitable shine and will clog up your pores, weighing your skin down.  Avoid products containing oil from petroleum, this includes mineral oil.
Water based products do wonders on an oily skin, leaving your skin feeling light and fresh all day. Find foundations that contain titanium dioxide, a naturally occurring sun protector with Koalin in to help the oil control.  A great foundation to use is Dermalogica Treatment Foundation; it has an oil-free formula and is created by skincare experts. This liquid is an easy smoothable liquid, great for oily skin types.
Having oily skin isn’t the end of the world and any skin type has its problems. The main thing to remember if you have oily skin is to avoid stripping, drying products (often alcohol based) that cause the skin to become dehydrated and irritated. I know it may feel like you want all the grease gone, but everything needs to be done in moderation. Treat your skin well and you will be treated well back with beautiful glowing skin. Our skin needs to last our lifetime, so be nice to it 🙂
