Five Best Looks at Oscars 2012
My passion for fashion and film is proven by the fact that I wake up every year at 5:30 am just to watch the Oscars live. It was such a great way to start the day by seeing Michelle Williams’ gown first thing in the morning. Of course there were gigantic fashion mistakes made by Jennifer Lopez and Meryl Streep but, in this article, I shall celebrate some memorable looks. The theme was old Hollywood glamor. Hollywood upped its glam quotient, even as it played it very, very safe. Here are the top five looks that graced the red carpet this year.
5. Cameron Diaz in Gucci
Cameron Diaz looked radiant in this gown by Gucci. Her hair matched her dress, just as her diamond necklace matched the shimmery details of her gown. The only sign of color was Diaz’s perfectly done make up- a lovely matte lip shade, natural looking blush and just a hint of kohl pencil. Having lost her bony structure and developed a more meaty frame, her beautiful dress matched her perfectly. The hair cut was so chic, so manageable, so There’s Something About Mary. Cameron looked totally relaxed and this has to be one of her best red carpet looks.
4. Tina Fey in Carolina Herrera
Tina Fey beats red carpet veterans like Penelope Cruz in the best dressed category. This gown is so her. She is always a big fan of anything in dark blue and this blue peplum gown works wonders for her. In fact, it is custom made by Carolina Herrera. The belt, the pleating, the flair, everything makes Tina Fey the surprise front-runner in red carpet glory.
3. Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace
There always has to be a well-made Versace dress to steal the show. But this time, it is Angelina’s bony leg that got more attention than the fact that the dress is a beautiful piece of craft. If Angelina did not go out of her way to show that the dress has a dangerously long slit(even parodied by a screenwriter of The Descendants to whom Jolie presented the award), people would have time to notice that the dress is beautifully shaped and pleated and black velvet seems to be the perfect fabric to craft this design. While Angelina’s hair looks amazing in beautifully done curls, the blood red, almost dripping lip color was just a little too much in terms of texture.
2. Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford
Gwyneth Paltrow’s dress was such a relief to sore(and bored) eyes. Her look is almost deceptively simple. The casual ponytail, the poker-straight hair, no earrings, only a beautiful diamond bracelet. Who needs anything when you have this heavenly dress? And wonder of wonders, she wore a cape of the same material over it! Who has tried that before? She took it off while presenting Best Documentary to reveal barely there sleeves. The asymmetrical neck, the barely pleated effect that is a favorite with the Oscars this year, the lack of a train and oh, the boldness to wear a cape makes this Tom Ford dress the breakthrough red carpet look this year.
1. Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton
And the Oscar for Best Dressed goes to…Michelle Williams! I had admired her understated, maternal-meets-Edie Sedgwick look at the Golden Globes, but I was in no way prepared to see this. This dress will go down in the annals of red carpet history as one the best dresses ever made. Though it looks a kind of burnt orange in pictures, on TV it looked a very stark and rich red. This dress is so lavish; someone like Angelina Jolie would have completely ruined it, but the fact that the demure, angelic Michelle Williams wore it does full justice both to the dress and to Michelle. The peplum(a favorite fashion motif this year), the tiered effect, the corset, the train, the mismatched pink clutch, the diamond bow brooch on her waist, everything with this look is stunning. Michelle is still Michelle with her blond bob, an understated diamond necklace and barely there make-up. She has the most natural glow.
Much as I love Meryl Streep, if only Michelle Williams had won Best Actress and ended the evening by coming up on stage wearing this….
