Palmer’s Coconut Oil Formula Conditioning Shampoo Review

Hello ladies,

Who doesn’t like the smell of coconut, especially in summers? It takes me back to the island holidays, I have been to where everything is coconut based.  So far, the only coconut-based hair care I have used has been Herbal Essences, so when I saw one of my favourite brands – “Palmer’s” has a coconut-oil based hair care range, I had to try it. Palmer’s has been a household name for many years, especially their signature cocoa butter fragrance. I have tried their body butters and foot cream in the past and currently I am religiously using the tummy butter for stretch marks. This brand does have a good reputation for quality drugstore products, so I picked up the shampoo and conditioner without even checking out the reviews.  I have been using the Victoria’s Secret shampoo and conditioner for a while and even though I love them, I finished them up (I know I should not be washing my hair every day, but in summers, it is so difficult not to take a head bath) and wanted to use something different with a different fragrance. Palmer’s also does an olive oil range and a shea butter range for hair care, but I wanted to try the coconut oil one as I liked the fragrance.

My Experience with Palmer’s Coconut Oil Formula Conditioning Shampoo:

This comes in a white simple bottle with a flip top cap.  The packaging is quite simple and straightforward like all products from this brand, I think they aim to be a unisex brand.  The shampoo is quite thick in consistency and white/milky in color.  The fragrance is the closest you can get to the real thing. It doesn’t smell like freshly squeezed coconut milk, the kind you would use in India for cooking, rather like the coconut milk available in cans you have to make do with if you live abroad. There is nothing artificial about the fragrance, I really like it.

This product even though thick, lathers well and cleanses hair and scalp well. I used the conditioner from the same brand on the mid to ends. After washing off the shampoo, my hair felt a bit weighed down at the ends, which might be because of the conditioner (I might have used a bit too much), but the next day my hair felt thicker, smoother and shiny.

Because this product comes across as a conditioning shampoo, I was worried about it upsetting my oily scalp, but that didn’t happen either. My hair and scalp felt clean for three days and on the third day, I had another wash. Unlike other sulphate-free shampoos, this does not give you an “not completely clean” feeling even after washing the hair. This is not a “wow” or “must-have” product, but for a sulphate-free shampoo with a beautiful fragrance for such a budget price, this is a must try. This has become my favourite drugstore shampoo for the time being.

Palmer's Coconut Oil Formula Conditioning Shampoo 5

The fragrance lasts for about 2 days. The shampoo claims it is good for most hair types, but on the front of the bottle, it says “for fine limp hair.” I am confused as I feel the only type of hair which would not benefit from this shampoo is “fine and limp hair.”

Pros of Palmer’s Coconut Oil Formula Conditioning Shampoo:

  • Does not contain sulphates, parabens, phthalates, and dyes.
  • Cleans scalp and hair well without stripping natural oil or making it dry.
  • Smells lovely, just like coconuts.
  • Extremely well priced for the way it performs and the quantity.
  • Even without conditioner, my hair is frizz free and smooth.
  • Fragrance lasts for about 2 days.

Cons of Palmer’s Coconut Oil Formula Conditioning Shampoo:

  • Hair feels a bit weighed down immediately after washing, but that goes away within a day.
